Chapter 38

By the time she was sitting in Landon’s passenger seat on the way home, Melody’s head was still buzzing.

The first thing she did when she got home, before even turning on the lights, was pour herself a glass of water to calm her rapid breathing.

Melody set the glass down on the dining table. Before she had a chance to think, the phone on the table started to ring.

She picked it up and saw that it was a call from her university in France.

she answered, confused. The person on the line turned out to be a former classmate.

Oh my god, Melody, I finally found your number from back home in the school’s records office.”

During her two years studying in French, Melody had used a France phone number. After returning to NYC, she naturally switched back to her domestic SIM card, so she wouldn’t have received any calls made to her French number.

Chinking of this, Melody felt a little apologetic.

Sorry, I came back in such a rush, I forgot to leave you guys my new number. It’s a good thing you found it. Is something wrong?”

It’s nothing major. I was just at the campus mailroom the other day and was chatting with the clerk. She was complaining that some guy from back home sends

letter to the school every month, but she can’t get in touch with the recipient, so it’s become a problem.”

I didn’t think much of it at first. I figured maybe the recipient had taken a leave of absence and the sender hadn’t updated the address yet. Later, the mailroom Herk asked me to take a look and see if I recognized the recipient, because the name was written in English and she couldn’t read it.”

So I took a look, and I was shocked to find that all those dozens of letters were addressed to you. I took the letters from the clerk, planning to bring them to our dorm, but your roommate told me you’d gone back home.”

Then I tried calling your number, but it always went unanswered. I was worried the sender might have something urgent, so I went to the records office and ound the phone number and address you left when you enrolled, and that’s how I finally got a hold of you.”

I’ve already mailed those letters back to you, to your home address. The delivery guy just called me and said the package has arrived at the pickup station in our neighborhood, so I’m calling to let you know to remember to go get it.”

Melody thanked her classmate from across the ocean, who then said she had to go and quickly hung up.

Melody realized that the letters her classmate mentioned, the ones left in the school mailroom, must have all been sent by Landon.

t first, when Landon had said he wrote her a letter every month, Melody hadn’t really believed him, because she truly had never received one.

ut on second thought, she had changed her number a long time ago and had also blocked him.

was perfectly normal that Landon couldn’t contact her and had the wrong contact information, which was why she never received the letters.

ortunately, Landon’s letters, which had traveled across the ocean, didn’t just gather dust in the school mailroom after all. They were eventually discovered.
