The young man’s words made the panting old man laugh. “You? Go kill them? Ashton and Briar are not like those others you can toy with so easily. They’re not easy to kill.”
The young man replied, “So what? Others can’t kill them because they’re on the opposing side. The moment Ashton sees them, he knows they’re there to kill him.”
Although the young man was smiling, the gloom and ferocity in his eyes were chilling, “Grandpa, don’t forget, my brother and Frank are still friends.”
The old man burst out laughing, his anger vanishing completely. “Excellent. As expected of my grandson. I’ll be waiting for your good news.”
After waking up naturally, Briar didn’t get out of bed immediately. Instead, she rolled over and snuggled into the arms of Ashton, who was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking at his laptop.
“Honey, good mor…afternoon.” She had meant to say good morning, but after catching a glimpse of the time in the corner of the computer screen, she switched it mid–sentence.
Ashton hugged his soft, sweet–smelling wife. “Good afternoon, honey.”
“It’s so late. Why didn’t you wake me up?” Briar slid one of her feet between the man’s legs and rubbed it against him.
Ashton frowned slightly, reaching under the blanket to grab her misbehaving foot. “Honey, you just woke up. Is it really a good idea to be teasing your husband?”
Briar smiled. “Don’t you like it?”
Ashton closed his laptop and set it on the nightstand. Then, as Briar watched with a knowing, triumphant smile, he grabbed her and pinned her back against the bed. “Like it? Oh, I like it a lot.”
In an instant, the room was filled with sunshine, warm breeze, and blazing passion…
When Briar woke again, it was the rumbling of her stomach that pulled her from sleep.
Ashton was no longer in bed. Briar grabbed her phone and checked the time. It was 1:10 pm. No wonder she’d been woken up by hunger.
She rolled out of bed, grabbed some clothes from the dressing room, did a quick wash–up, and headed downstairs.
She was so hungry she could eat a whole cow.
Ashton, Brandon, and Connor sat on the sofa in the living room, discussing something.

little steps almost skipping. He smiled. “Honey, are you hungry?”
Briar nodded. “Yeah, I’m starving.”

Ashton motioned for Brandon and the others to pause. He then got up, went to the kitchen, and brought out the warm food, setting it on the dining table. “I had them make your favorite soup. Have a bowl before you
eat.”
“Okay.” Briar took the spoon from his hand and began eating at once.
She really was famished.
Ashton didn’t disturb her any further and went back to the sofa to resume their discussion.
But this time, they all lowered their voices, not wanting to disturb her meal.
Even so, Briar still caught snippets of their discussion. After finishing her heartfelt meal, she slowed her eating and looked toward the sofa. “Mr. Wade, have you already found the person behind all this? Who is it? Where are they?”
Her three consecutive questions revealed her eagerness for an answer.
But before Ashton and the others could answer, Briar’s phone rang. She glanced down at the caller ID and quickly answered, “Ted, why the sudden call?”
The caller was Ted, Frank’s friend from their medical department.
Ted sounded a little sheepish. “Briar, is Frank with you? I tried calling him, but I couldn’t get through.”
Briar looked at Frank and waved him over. “I’ll pass the phone to him. Hold on.”
“Who is it?” Frank asked, surprised that the call was for him.
Still, he got up, walked to the dining table, and took the phone from Briar. “Hello? Who’s this?”
“It’s me.” Ted’s voice was tinged with exasperation. “Why couldn’t I get through to you? I’ve called you several times.”
Frank took out his phone and saw that it had been silenced at some point. He did have several missed calls. “Oh, I must have accidentally put my phone on silent. Is it anything urgent?”
Ted said, “Nothing urgent. My brother’s custom yacht just arrived, and I’m thinking of having some people over tonight to celebrate. What do you say? Will you grace us with his presence?”
Just as Frank was about to refuse, Ted continued, “If you agree to come, then I’ll feel comfortable inviting Briar! I heard her say she loves seafood, and the weather is perfect for some sea fishing tonight!”
Frank swallowed the refusal on the tip of his tongue. “Wait a moment. I’ll ask her if she wants to go.”
“Briar, Ted’s brother had a new yacht from overseas and wants to invite us to go sea fishing tonight. Do you want to go?” Frank asked.

He didn’t lower his voice, so both Briar and Ashton heard him clearly.
Frank knew that at a time like this, Ashton wouldn’t let Briar go out alone.

Sure enough, when Briar’s eyes lit up with interest and she nodded, Ashton immediately spoke. “Sea fishing is more fun with more people. We’ll go too.”
Frank told Ted the number of people in his group and asked how many people his brother was inviting.
If there were too many people, they could take their own yacht out to sea together.
Ted quickly said there weren’t many people, and with their group, the total would be less than fifteen.
“Alright, we’ll drive to the seaside tonight to meet up.” Frank and Ted agreed on a time.
After Frank hung up the phone, Connor asked, “Ashton, why would the Wilson family invite you and Briar on an outing at a time like this?”
The call was for Frank, and although he was invited first, Briar was invited next.
But with a little thought, it was clear that the entire call centered on Ashton and Briar.
The people Ted wanted to invite on his brother’s behalf were also Ashton and Briar.
“Could there be a conspiracy here?” Ian looked worriedly at Briar. “Briar, maybe we shouldn’t go. The sea isn’t really our strong ground.”
Briar locked eyes with Ashton across the room for several seconds, both of them reading the same thought in each other’s gaze. “It’s fine. I think this call from Ted is just to lure the two of us out.”
“Perfect. We’ve already found out who’s behind this. Now, let’s see if they have enough people to trap us at sea, or if we can launch a surprise attack and catch them off guard,” Ashton chimed in with a smile.
After so much back–and–forth, it was time to bring this game to a true conclusion.
“Then we’ll slip into the water ahead of time and coordinate from the inside.” Seeing he couldn’t talk them out of it, Ian began rubbing his hands together eagerly.
If they couldn’t avoid the fight, then they’d fight head–on.
