Not only were Briar and Ashton secretly getting ready for battle, but the Wilson family, upon hearing that Briar and Ashton had agreed to join the outing, were overjoyed.
Only Ted silently turned away with his phone in hand, his shoulders faintly trembling.
Ted’s father, Noah Wilson, watched his eldest son depart, unable to bear the sight. He wanted to say something, but Ted’s grandfather, Henry Wilson, stared at him in silence.
Noah hoped his eldest son could understand that everything they were doing was for the sake of the Wilson family.
Once Ashton was gone, the Wade family’s resources would be secretly carved up by the other major clans. For the Wilson family to reclaim their position as one of the top families in Shoneport, they had been laying the groundwork for years. At this crucial moment, there was no room for weakness.
In this regard, Ted was far less decisive than Ryan. When faced with major decisions, notions like friendship, loyalty, or moral righteousness must all be put aside.
A future head of the Wilson family without ruthless means wouldn’t lead the family to the center of power in Shoneport.
Noah’s gaze shifted to the younger son sitting next to Henry, whose harmless appearance hid a scheming mind.
It seemed clear from Henry’s attitude that the position of family head would eventually bypass Ted and go to Ryan instead.
“Grandpa, since Ashton offered to come with Briar, I’ll go and prepare so we can be proper hosts,” Ryan said smugly.
Although they guessed Ashton might come with Briar, they didn’t expect him to offer.
This showed that Ashton had let his guard down around the Wilson family. After all, the Wilson family had always kept a low profile over the years.
Besides, Ted and Frank had been friends for many years. Given their friendship, Ashton would never suspect that the Wilson family was involved in the experimental research from over a decade ago.
“Go and prepare. Make sure Ashton has a good time.” Impressed by Ryan’s quick thinking, Henry smiled, which only made him more displeased with Ted’s reaction.
As a descendant of the Wilson family, Ted had wasted all these years building personal ties with the Wade family without ever seeking advantages for their own clan.
He was not nearly as useful as Ryan, who had lived abroad all these years.
This time, the Wilson family had to seize this golden opportunity that had practically delivered itself to their
door.

If they could take Ashton down in one fell swoop and claim Shoneport’s largest resources, the Wilson family would be a top contender to become one of the four great families.
They might even oust the Haynes family and take their place as one of the new four great families.
He hoped that Ashton and Briar would be sensible enough tonight not to make things difficult for him.
Otherwise, the crown prince of Shoneport? How capable could a crown prince be without the backing of the Wade family?
“Sir, our men have discovered that someone plans to attack the young master.” Inside the very heart of imperial power in Shoneport, a palace guard knocked on the study door. When he received permission to enter, he strode quickly to the desk and bowed to the man who was buried in his work, speaking in a tense voice.
The man had a commanding presence. His mere presence was enough to inspire awe, making it difficult for anyone to act presumptuously or look him in the eye.
This man was none other than Gideon McInnes, the youngest leader in Dasmieca at 47 years old. With a military background, he rose to power and, through decisive and ruthless means, brought many of Dasmieca’s powerful families and influential figures firmly under his control within just five years.
Upon hearing this, Gideon paused his writing.
He looked up from his documents at the guard, his tone devoid of any real concern. “Which reckless fool is looking for trouble this time?”
The guard relaxed slightly upon seeing that his superior wasn’t angry. Still, he answered with a serious expression, “It’s the Wilson family this time.”
“The Wilson family?” Gideon frowned. “Do they really think they can go after Ashton and Briar?”
The guard replied, “The Wilson family is well–prepared this time. They have hired two vessels for their naval force alone.”
“It seems that after a few peaceful years, these families have forgotten how they were ‘cleansed‘ not long ago.” Gideon sneered. A mere Wilson family dared to deploy maritime forces. They must be tired of living in Shoneport and wish to be relocated.
The guard stood up straight in silence, not daring to speak.
Although Gideon had only been in power in Dasmieca for five years, his decisive methods were known throughout the nation.
Gideon said, “Send word to the Goodwin and Parkinson families. If they can’t control the military, they need to get out of their leadership positions at once.”
The guard immediately saluted, “Yes, sir. I’ll relay the order right away.”

It seemed that the Wilson family’s decision to move against Ashton had finally angered Gideon, to the point that even Goodwin and Parkinson families were about to feel his displeasure.
Meanwhile, Ashton and Briar were completely unaware of everything happening in the palace.
They were still slowly savoring the last moments of peace before nightfall.
“Honey, what do you think? If the Wilson family really makes a move against us tonight, do you think Frank will be upset when he finds out?” Briar asked as she and Ashton lay in the courtyard, soaking up the warm sunlight.
Ashton snorted. “He has the nerve to feel upset? I warned him long ago that the Wilson family wasn’t as nice as they appeared, but he refused to listen.”
Briar glanced to the other side of the yard, where Frank and Connor were happily digging and planting flowers. She quickly came to Frank’s defense, afraid that Ashton might lose his temper and give Frank a beating.
She said, “Then Ted… probably didn’t set Frank up willingly either.”
“Ted chose his unscrupulous family over his friend. After what he did this time, he doesn’t deserve to be Frank’s friend.” Ashton’s voice turned cold.
Even knowing what the Wilsons were secretly up to, Ted could still act like nothing was wrong and be friends with Frank. Such a friend was better lost.
Briar chuckled. “You’re all talk but soft–hearted. If you really didn’t care, you would have exposed the Wilson family’s plans right in front of Frank. You didn’t, because you didn’t want to hurt him.”
Compared to the other Wade family members, Ashton treated Frank and Jalen the best.
He didn’t deny her accusation. He simply pulled her into his arms in silence.
Having lived in the Wade family for so many years, he knew their personalities better than anyone.
Ashton couldn’t bear to shatter Frank’s innocence. There were already enough people in this world who had lost their moral compass.
He wouldn’t let kind–hearted people like Frank and Jalen be dragged down into that same mire.
