While they were fighting, Juliette had already hidden herself. She only knew a few small tricks to buy time; if it came down to an actual fight, she’d probably just get in the way. She crouched in the corner nervously,, but thankfully, Max handled every moment of danger with perfection. His final kick landed on one man’s nasal bone.
Juliette could practically hear the sound of that bone cracking. Blood gushed from the man’s nose. She didn’t feel a shred of sympathy for scum like them–so long as they weren’t dead, she didn’t care what happened next.
With two of the men already taken down, Juliette was just about to come out from hiding when she noticed the one Max had knocked out earlier slowly getting up. Somehow, he’d found a brick and was silently approaching Max.
“Behind you!” Juliette shouted, running forward. Max heard her just as the brick was raised high in the air and brought crashing down. Suddenly, he felt someone throw themselves at his back… It was a soft, warm body.
The brick smashed against a skull and shattered into pieces. Juliette felt a sharp numbness spread through her entire body.
Realizing he’d made a huge mistake, the man stepped back in a panic and bolted toward the
exit.
Max turned around and saw Juliette’s face, pale as a sheet.
“Where did it hit you?”
“The back, but I don’t think it’s serious.” Juliette reached to touch the back of her head. Looking at her hand, it was stained red with blood. Her vision blurred, her strength seemed to drain all at once, and she couldn’t stay on her feet anymore. But she didn’t collapse onto the floor; she fell into someone’s arms.
“Idiot!” That was the last thing she heard before losing consciousness, the man’s frustrated voice.
She was an idiot, and she admitted it. Otherwise, how could her life have ended up like this?
Inside the Rolls–Royce, Juliette was completely unconscious. Max ordered the driver to head straight to the hospital, and Caleb quickly contacted a renowned local neurologist.
That chaotic night passed. The next time Juliette opened her eyes, it was already noon the following day.

That familiar hospital smell lingered in her nose. A handsome man sat beside her, watching her closely. His eyes were bloodshot. He clearly hadn’t slept well.
The doctor said you might have memory loss. Do you remember me?”
“Nope. Juliette blinked innocently.
The man pressed his lips together. For someone used to calling the shots, to controlling lives with ease, he now looked completely at a loss. Seeing his face, Juliette couldn’t help but laugh.
Just kidding. Max, my bodyguard husband. Super good at fighting, and has a sharp tongue
too.”
Max’s face darkened instantly. He raised his hand, intending to flick her forehead, but remembering her head injury, he grabbed her cheek instead. Pinching the soft skin between his fingers, he tugged it lightly and said, “Do you think this is the time to be joking?”
Ow! It hurts!”
He released her face, and the soft feeling between his fingers vanished.
“Don’t worry, I’m Juliette, not Vivienne. I’m tough. I’ve had worse injuries in prison. Ran a high fever for ten days straight without even seeing a doctor,” Juliette said, her face still pale.
“How reckless. Since you’re awake, don’t you think you owe me an explanation? Why were you working at that kind of place?” Max questioned.
She
got lucky this time because he just happened to be passing by. But what if he wasn’t there? Did she ever consider what could’ve happened to her? Or did she simply not care about her own dignity anymore?
“What’s wrong with working at that kind of place?” Juliette’s tone fell.
Don’t you think there’s a problem? A girl working somewhere like that? The chances of running into scum are way higher! I might be able to save you once, but what about twice or three times? How many times can your head take a beating?”
Juliette knew Max wasn’t wrong. But that job paid five thousand dollars a month! It was the highest–paying job she could find at the moment.
Seeing her stay silent, Max said coldly, “I’m going to quit that job for you. You’re not going back”
“Why do you get to decide for me?” Juliette snapped emotionally.

“What? Not playing mute anymore? Then tell me–what’s so great about that job? What’s holding you back?”
Juliette was so angry, her chest heaved. “That job isn’t great, okay? It sounds terrible, makes people think I’m cheap, and I know all that! But have you ever thought about what kind of situation I’m in now? I’ve been to prison! What company would even consider hiring me? Max. do you think I haven’t tried? But just having a place to live, and one meal a day, is already more than I could hope for right now!”
By the time she finished, her eyes were red. She didn’t want him to see her tears, so she pulled the blanket over her face. From underneath, he could hear her sniffing quietly.
Max pressed his fingers to his temple. He was trying to reason with her, and he never meant make her cry. When it came to comforting women, he had zero experience.
“We’re both adults. Stop crying already,” he said awkwardly.
“None of your business,” came the muffled reply from under the blanket.
“What did you study in college?”
“Clinical medicine.” Just saying it made Juliette want to cry even more. She used to be top of her class. Now look at her.
“I’ll find you a job. Stop crying.”
Her head was still injured. If she kept crying, it could make things worse. Juliette peeked out from under the blanket. Her eyes shimmered with tears as she looked at Max.
“If you can’t find a job, then I’ll keep working as a sales assistant at Nigori Adult Store. But you’re not allowed to quit for me.”
Her voice was raspy from crying, but it sounded inexplicably beautiful.

“Fine,” he said, defeated. But come on, I am the president of Sphere Corporation. How hard could it be to find one little job?
She stayed in the hospital for one more day. That night, Max returned with a document in hand. For you.”
“What is it?” Juliette asked, taking the document from him.
“Didn’t you say you majored in clinical medicine? I found a job based on your field.”
Juliette figured it was probably something like a nursing aide position. But as she opened the
