Vivienne looked at Gavin and said, “Gavin, I don’t think I did anything wrong. Just think about it… Sis working alone at an adult store; isn’t that the kind of place where trouble is bound to happen? I did send someone to keep an eye on her, but it’s not like I was actually going to hurt her. Look at her now, isn’t she perfectly fine? I went through all that trouble because I hoped she’d realize that working at a place like that wasn’t right for her. I just wanted her to switch jobs. Sure, what happened probably scared her a bit, but my intentions were good.”
Gavin stared at Vivienne. Had I really just been overthinking everything?
“Gavin, I thought you understood me better than anyone. Don’t you know what kind of person I am? I really just want everyone to live peacefully and happily together.”
“I’m sorry.” Gavin spoke in a low, subdued voice. I had been too worried about Juliette, nearly causing a huge misunderstanding.
“It’s okay. I heard Sis is working at Sphere Corporation now. I wonder who pulled the strings to get her in. Don’t tell me it was that Caleb again. Oh right, there’s one more thing I’ve been keeping from you. Those three men who were in my car a few days ago–they were the ones I sent to scare Jules before. But now, they’ve had their limbs completely ruined. They’re disabled. I’d bet Caleb had something to do with it. Sis is really relentless when it comes to revenge. Sometimes I’m genuinely afraid she’ll come after me again.” Vivienne let out a deep sigh.
“Don’t worry. I won’t let her do that to you!” Gavin stepped forward and patted her on the shoulder.
There was still a dinner engagement that night. Seeing it was getting late, Gavin finally left.
Only after Gavin was gone did Sylvia dare step into the room.
“Vivien, you didn’t argue with him, right?”
“Mom, can you stop talking nonsense already? Do you even realize you almost got me killed!” Vivienne snapped, clearly irritated.
Seeing her daughter still had the energy to talk, Sylvia figured the issue had likely passed.
“How was I supposed to know that little bitch would be so cunning? She actually managed to turn things around and use it against me! Next time, I’ll make sure to teach her a lesson!”
“Next time? Haven’t you caused me enough trouble already?” Vivienne said.

“Then what, just let her do whatever she wants?” Sylvia asked, clearly unwilling to back down.
Vivienne narrowed her eyes. Her pale lips parted slightly as she said, “Come to think of it, I haven’t seen Celine in a few days. Invite her to the hospital tomorrow. I’m sure she’s still upset about being kicked out of the party last time.”
Meanwhile, Juliette didn’t care what drama unfolded between Vivienne and Gavin.
Once work ended, she packed up her documents and clocked out.
Outside the condo, she saw Max from a distance, talking to a middle–aged man.
“You brat. You come back and immediately start giving me trouble! What’s wrong with the Monroe family’s eldest daughter? I saw her at the Newton University opening ceremony once. She’s beautiful, capable, and more than worthy of you!”
The man looked to be in his early fifties. Time hadn’t aged him–it had only added to his charm. A man’s prime really did last far longer than a woman’s.
“Dad is putting in all this effort just to clear the way for Brother. His fiancée is the only daughter of a publicly listed toy company–one of Newton’s most well–known families. And me? I’m stuck with a convict. The neglected eldest daughter of the Monroe family.”
Percy’s expression darkened. Being hit right where it hurt was never pleasant.
As Juliette approached, she finally saw the man’s face clearly–he was none other than Percy Donovan, the central figure of Donovan Group and someone frequently featured in financial magazines.
Why was he meeting with Max?
Could it be because my parents originally arranged for her to marry the third Donovan son, and since I’d resisted and married Max instead, Percy had come to give him trouble?
With that thought, Juliette picked up her pace and walked toward them.
“As long as you are my son, you don’t get to choose your own marriage! I’m doing this for your own good!” Percy said firmly.
“Oh really? I don’t see how that’s for my good. You left a ten–year–old child all alone overseas for years, and the first thing you do when I come back is try to force me to marry a convict. Percy, how do you justify that to my mother?” Max narrowed his long, fox–like eyes and stared at him. He didn’t even bother with honorifics.
He might just be the first person in all of Newton bold enough to talk to Percy that way.

Percy actually took a step back under the weight of his words.
Right then, Juliette stepped between them, shielding Max.
“You?”
Percy looked at her. Wasn’t this the Monroe family’s eldest daughter?
Out of respect for his seniority, Juliette gave him a polite bow.
“Mr. Percy, hello. I’m Juliette Monroe. Max and I truly love each other. We’ve already registered our marriage. They say a forced melon isn’t sweet. Maybe the third Donovan son and I just weren’t meant to be. Please, don’t push this any further.”
Thankfully, Percy was used to being in high positions and had seen all sorts of strange things in life. He managed to keep a calm expression.
He glanced at Max. “You two are really married?”
“Yes!”
To make her words more convincing, Juliette rose on tiptoe and kissed Max firmly on the corner of his lips.
Max’s Adam’s apple bobbed slightly, his eyes trembling like an earthquake.
“Fine. Good. Then live your lives well. No divorcing!” Percy said.
I had been thinking about how to matchmake them. Who would’ve thought they were already married behind me back?
Juliette hadn’t expected Percy to be so easygoing. She turned to Max, her eyes seeming to say, See? It’s all handled.
But Max’s handsome face was laced with cold frost.
“You go upstairs first.” He spoke icily.
“Okay. Don’t take too long.”
In front of others, I had to give my man some dignity.
“See? I told you, the Monroe girl is a good one.” Percy said, watching Juliette’s retreating figure.
“If I had known from the beginning that she was the one you were forcing me to marry, I

wouldn’t have done it.”

“The process doesn’t matter. The result is what counts.” Percy said with satisfaction.
“Don’t worry. Sooner or later, I’ll divorce her.” Max’s voice was cold, devoid of affection.
“You dare divorce her, and I’ll have her married off to a cripple the very next day. I’ll make sure she suffers every night for the rest of her life!”
Max didn’t doubt Percy’s words for a second. When a person holds power, ordinary people’s lives are his to command.
But I’d drag Percy down from that pedestal. Then, wouldn’t the one controlling others become myself?
That was why I had returned from abroad to Newton in the first place.
I didn’t want much–just to find out who was behind the fire that year when I was ten and to get revenge on everyone involved.
