“Yes, I believe Lauren didn’t do it on purpose. She’s never made this kind of mistake before.”
“How about banning her from promotions for two years? Dismissal is too harsh.”
Several colleagues exchanged reluctant glances.
Juliette curled her lips faintly.
How nice. A blatant setup, yet they managed to reframe it as a mere slip of the tongue.
The severity of the mistake was suddenly downplayed.
People always say that researchers aren’t good at talking–clearly not the case here.
Wasn’t Mr. Samuel’s assistant, Farren, the prime example?
Samuel noticed all of their expressions.
“Juliette, you’re at the center of this incident. What’s your opinion?” He asked.
“Mr. Samuel, you’re putting me in a tough spot. Logically, I should just take the easy way out and say, Yeah, it’s no big deal; let’s just move on. But I won’t. I refuse to forgive her. As a member of S Lab, she made such a basic error–it shows her mind was elsewhere and she wasn’t focused. This time, it was just a document error. But what if next time, it’s a mistake in experimental measurement? That could lead to a far worse consequence. Lauren isn’t fit to be a lab technician. Letting her go isn’t just best for S Lab–it’s best for her, too.”
After listening, Samuel nodded and said, “You’re right. Lauren, you’re dismissed.”
As Lauren left, her eyes were red with tears, full of resentment toward Juliette.
Juliette sat at her desk to rest for a while, then got up and knocked on Samuel’s office door.
“Come in.”
She entered with a draft in hand.
Juliette, I thought Lauren’s matter was already settled. Why are you here again?” Samuel asked after sipping from his thermos.
“Mr. Samuel, when I was compiling files yesterday, I came across the new insomnia drug

development plan. S Lab is trying to develop a traditional Chinese medicine alternative to distinguish it from modern sleep aids. The current issue is that cinnabar is included in the formula. You’ve expressed concern over this ingredient due to its mild toxicity and the risks associated with long–term use.”
Samuel raised an eyebrow. “That’s correct.”
“I have a modest suggestion. I think there might be an herb that could replace cinnabar.” Juliette said.
He narrowed his eyes slightly. “Let’s hear it.”
Truthfully, Samuel hadn’t taken Juliette’s input seriously. He’d reviewed her resume—she majored in clinical medicine at Newton University. She might’ve dabbled in traditional medicine but couldn’t possibly be proficient.
“Silktree Bark. Silktree bark has a neutral nature and sweet flavor. It enters the heart and liver meridians. It calms the mind, relieves depression, promotes blood circulation, and reduces swelling. It’s suitable for insomnia patients who suffer from emotional distress, such as anxiety, irritability, and forgetfulness.”
After she finished, Samuel went silent.
“Mr. Samuel, is there anything wrong with my suggestion?”
After a long pause, he finally said, “Silktree Bark–yes! Why didn’t I think of that? It could definitely substitute cinnabar’s effect!”
Seeing him agree, Juliette smiled gently.
I was genuinely glad I could contribute something to the lab.
Samuel stood up, determined to head into the lab immediately.
By the time Juliette left the office, it was already noon.
She went down to the convenience store just outside the company, planning to make herself a cup of instant noodles.
While browsing the options, her eyes fell on the bread on the shelf.
It looked exactly the same as the one she found on her desk that morning.
She picked it up and walked to the cashier. “Hi, may I ask if anyone came in to buy this bread around two or three in the morning?”

“Yes, someone did.” The cashier answered.
“Do you remember what they looked like?” she asked further.

“Not only do I remember, I even know his name. Mr. Caleb! Super handsome, highly capable, and such a dedicated worker. Was he here that late? Must really treat this company like home!” The cashier laughed.
Juliette wasn’t smiling anymore.
I barely even knew Caleb. Why was he helping me time and again?
People who rose to such high positions… I didn’t believe it was because of some overwhelming sense of justice or pity.
There had to be a reason.
I didn’t have much to offer. If anything, maybe just my looks.
So… was he into me?
Before lunch break ended, Juliette went up to the 66th floor and told the receptionist she wanted to see Mr. Caleb.
At that moment, Max and Jacob were chatting in the president’s office.
When the secretary said someone from S Lab–Juliette–was upstairs, everyone was stunned.
Could Juliette have figured out Max’s true identity?
“Did she say who she wanted to see?” Max asked, hiding the shock in his voice.
Could she have noticed something when I helped her with the documents at dawn?
“She said she’s here to see Mr. Caleb.”
Both Max and Jacob turned to look at Caleb.
Caleb had been quietly standing on the side, but now, under their scrutiny, he started sweating bullets.
“What’s the deal? A girl comes in asking to see you by name? Caleb, are you trying to steal your own boss’s girl? That’s some serious guts!” Jacob teased.
Caleb gulped and wiped his forehead. “Mr. Donovan, I swear I have no such intentions. I have

no idea what Ms. Monroe wants with me.”

“Max, maybe you’re just not charming enough. Maybe she’s not interested in you and has her eyes on Caleb instead. What if this is a confession? I’ve heard the front desk girls say Caleb’s quite the hidden gem around here,” Jacob added with a grin.
Max’s face turned as dark as storm clouds.
“Go out there and find out what she wants,” the man said coldly.
“Yes, Mr. Donovan.” Caleb’s steps felt especially heavy as he walked out. Was it possible that my entire career now depended on Juliette? I just prayed she wouldn’t say something completely outrageous.
“Ms. Monroe, is there something you’d like to discuss with me?” Caleb asked when he saw her.
Juliette glanced around. There were still quite a few people nearby.
“Mr. Caleb, it’s a personal matter. It’s not appropriate to talk here with so many eyes around. Can we go somewhere quieter?”
The veins on Caleb’s hands popped slightly, but he still nodded and said, “Alright. Let’s talk in a meeting room.”
Inside a small conference room, Juliette looked at him seriously.
“Mr. Caleb, you’re a great person–very capable and also very handsome.”
Meanwhile, back in the President’s Office, Max and Jacob were watching them via the surveillance system.
“Tsk tsk. At this rate, she’s going to confess in the next second,” Jacob commented enthusiastically.
Then he glanced at Max, who remained silent–his expression had darkened to the extreme.
A storm was definitely brewing.
