Chapter 13

Whenever free, Ethan would bring Amanda over to sit awhile.

When Emily got swamped, Ethan helped her out, serving customers.

Amanda always curled up quietly on the small corner sofa, reading the picture books Ethan bought.

When free, Ethan sat beside her writing scripts.

Emily would brew him a pot of coffee.

One sunny afternoon, Ethan suggested taking Amanda to the amusement park.

The park buzzed with noise, Amanda holding Ethan’s left hand and Emily’s right, jumping excitedly.

Finally, the three stopped before the haunted house.

“Amanda, scared?”

Emily playfully tugged her hand.

“With sister and uncle here, I’m not afraid.”

Amanda took her and Ethan’s hands and walked forward.

Inside the haunted house, pitch black, a chilly wind blew out.

Emily shivered, eerie howls echoing in her ears.

Suddenly, a ghost NPC jumped right at Emily’s face.

It scared her into a cold sweat, and she backed away fast.

Ethan reacted swiftly, pulling her into his arms.

“If scared, just close your eyes and keep walking.”

Emily’s heart relaxed, she leaned lightly on Ethan’s shoulder and followed him.

Until light gradually appeared, she slowly opened her eyes.

“The exit’s almost here.”

Ethan whispered softly, carefully supporting her.

Out of the haunted house, Emily sighed in relief.

She realized she still leaned on Ethan’s shoulder, paused, and quickly moved away.

Ethan’s face had turned bright red.

Emily’s heart suddenly beat uncontrollably fast.

After that, Ethan came more often, sometimes with Amanda, sometimes alone.

Each visit, he brought Emily something-small flowers for the shop, handmade cookies, or fresh Herbal Calming Infusion.

Emily gradually got used to this companionship.

One rainy night, Emily cleaned the table to close up when the doorbell rang.

“Sorry, we’re closed.”

Just as she snapped out of it, she saw Ethan outside, soaked, holding feverish Amanda.

“Sorry to bother you so late.”

His voice trembled, “Amanda has a fever and keeps demanding you tell her a story.”

Emily quickly let them in and made Ethan ginger coffee.

She took the burning-hot Amanda, looking at her flushed little face, heart aching.

That night, Emily stayed by Amanda’s side, telling her stories.

Ethan sat nearby, watching them with a gentle gaze.

When Amanda fell asleep, the rain outside hadn’t stopped yet.

“Thank you so much for today.”

Ethan said softly.

Emily shook her head, about to stand up, but suddenly felt dizzy and stumbled, almost falling.

Ethan quickly scoffeedied her, and when she looked up, she realized they were standing

close.

Both blushed silently, looked at each other without words, then turned away.

Reflected in the moonlight, the atmosphere felt intensely intimate.

Over the next few weeks, the coffee shop’s business gradually stabilized.

When free, Ethan often brought Amanda over.

Amanda and Emily grew closer.

Today’s sunlight was as dazzling as usual; Emily sat by the floor-to-ceiling window, while Ethan inside was changing Amanda into new clothes.

A black luxury car suddenly stopped outside Emily’s cafe.
