Chapter 3
My head thudded heavily against the floor, sharp pain instantly flooding my body.
Yet Dad glared down from the second floor, with a dark face:
“Disgrace! Hurting Stephanie right before our eyes-I never should’ve brought you home!”
“Get back to the storage room!
Don’t let her out without my
orders!”
I lay at the stair landing, warmth spreading from the back of my skull.
But Mom, Dad, and Mark stepped over me without a glance, taking Stephanie out.
The housekeeper hastily bandaged me and hauled me to the storage room before leaving the villa.
I lay on the floor, my consciousness fading fast.
Blood soaked through the bandage, pooling thicker on the concrete.
The stomach pain that haunted me for three years seemed to vanish; my body felt lighter.
Seems this is the end.
After over a decade of torment, I can finally rest.
All these years, I endured nightmares and hurt daily.
I’d hoped for love from my biological parents,
only to learn blood ties couldn’t outweigh Stephanie who replaced me…
Whatever… I smiled contentedly.
Next life-I never want to meet any of them again.

Mark and my parents stayed at the hospital with Stephanie for three days,
even summoning the director urgently to monitor her burns.
Relief washed over the three when told no scars would remain.
Mom frowned tightly.
“Where did Catherine learn such awful habits? She was so obedient as a child!”
She shook her head.
“Never mind. We’ll discipline her properly-let her learn from Stephanie!”
Stephanie nodded obediently nearby, while venom flashed in her eyes.
As they left the hospital, Mark walked past a doctor who muttered:
“This Catherine… advanced-stage gastric cancer for three years, why no treatment?
We can’t even get through to her on the phone!”
Mark frowned. Catherine?
Probably just same name.
He dismissed it, leaving with his parents and Stephanie.
Yet unease prickled him. As soon as they got home, he went straight to find the housekeeper:
“We’ve been away-did Catherine cause trouble in storage?”
The housekeeper shook her head.
“No trouble… but she hasn’t eaten for three days.”
“She just lies there, ignoring me when I callher. And that storage room-she made it so stinky, it’s disgusting!”
Mom’s face darkened.
“Who’s she throwing tantrums for?
Starving herself to ruin the Nguyen family’s reputation?

Catherine, get out here!”
No response came from the storage room.
Mark spotted Catherine’s black backpack in the corner and picked it up.
Inside lay only an empty wallet and a hospital diagnosis report.
Reading it, his pupils constricted violently.
Catherine. Female. 20. Gastric Cancer… Advanced Stage!
The date: three years ago.
Mark stared at the diagnosis report in disbelief, his hands trembling slightly.
The name that doctor kept murmuring before he left the hospital suddenly echoed in his mind
Catherine has gastric cancer?
Impossible?
If Catherine really got gastric cancer three years ago, what had they all been doing these in the past three years?
Mark violently swung the door open and rushed in, a foul stench instantly assaulting everyone’s nostrils.
“It reeks!
What on earth is Catherine doing in there!”
Stephanie couldn’t help but cry out, only to find Mark frozen in place.
“What’s wrong?
Don’t tell me Catherine actually did something in the storage room?”
But Mark could no longer hear Stephanie’s words.
He stood transfixed, staring at Catherine lying utterly motionless in the depths of the storage
room.

Lividity mottled her face and body, while the blood that had oozed from the back of her skull had long dried into a dark crust!
Catherine… was dead?
