Chapter 6
Patrick let out what sounded like a low curse under his breath, but still stood up without hesitation.
He handed me the ointment. “Put it on yourself. I’m heading to the study.”
I took the ointment and watched him walk out of the room.
I let out a heavy breath, feeling like I had just been granted a reprieve.
My phone vibrated on the side table.
Snapping back to reality, I picked it up and saw a message.
It was from an unfamiliar number.
“This is Edward Jenkins. Save my number.”
I stared at the screen for a long moment before replying, “Okay, Edward.”
He didn’t respond after that.
Patrick didn’t come back to the room either.
Later, he called to say something had happened at a subsidiary office in New York, and he had to travel there.
I could hear the frustration in his voice. It sounded serious.
That gave me a bit of breathing room.

The next morning, I was getting ready to head back to campus.
Just as I came downstairs, I ran into Edward again.
This time, he was wearing glasses.
The reflection from the lenses made his already cool demeanor seem even colder. It was completely different from the man who had kissed me gently that night.
I greeted him the same way I did when we first met, obedient and polite. “Good morning, Edward.”
He gave a small nod. “Are you heading back to school?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll give you a ride. It’s on my way.”
I wanted to decline, but he cut in, “Patrick’s not around. As his older brother, it’s my job to look after you. Have something to eat first.”
I picked at my food before giving up after a few bites.
He didn’t say anything and walked out.
I grabbed my bag and followed, head down.
Once we got in the car and the door closed, Edward reached up and pressed the partition button.
“Edward?” I asked, a little startled.
He took off his glasses and placed them in the storage compartment before turning to look at me.

“How’s the injury?”
My face turned bright red. “I–It’s healing.”
He nodded, then pulled out a different ointment and offered it to me. “If the wound’s closed, apply this. It helps reduce scarring.”
I stared at him, surprised, and immediately waved my hands.
“No, no, it’s okay. Patrick already gave me something.”
His expression didn’t change, but something about his silence felt increasingly intimidating.
“Take it,” he said. “This one works better.”
“I really don’t need it…” I shook my head hard, my voice starting to tremble. “Patrick’s already a little upset I mistook you for him. If I show up with something from you, he’ll be even more mad…”
He looked at me for a moment, then slowly lowered his hand.
“You seem to care about him a lot.”
“Yes. He’s my first boyfriend.” I bit my lip and added softly, eyes brimming with affection, “He’s always treated me so well. I really love him.”
I thought I heard him chuckle under his breath. Or maybe I imagined it.
He turned away, leaned back in his seat, eyes fixed on the road ahead.
The rest of the drive was silent.
When we arrived, I whispered, “Thank you for today, Edward. I’ll head into school now.”

He nodded slightly. “Mm.”
I clutched my backpack straps and opened the door, but he suddenly called out to me again.
“Michelle.”
I turned instinctively and met his cool, steady gaze.
“This ointment is the best for preventing scars,” he said. “Use it on the cut on your leg.”
My breath caught.
“Edward, how did you know I had a cut on my leg?”
He didn’t answer.
He just placed the ointment in my hand.
I stood frozen for a moment, then stepped out and closed the door behind me.
The car pulled away quickly.
I stood there for a while before pulling out my phone to reply to Patrick’s message.
“I miss you too. Are you really going to be gone for ten days?”
“More or less. I’ll try to wrap things up and come back early.”
“Okay. I’ll be here waiting for you.”
