I watch my best friend leave the hospital room. He leaves me alone with my mate. Mark said something about talking with Daniel to corroborate their story.
500000…” I say, drawing out the o, not sure how to begin the conversation.
“Well, let’s get the rejection over with. I’m healed enough to take the rejection,” she growls at me, trying to put up a brave front.
There it is again, her false bravado. It’s there, I can feel it through the bond. I can also feet my own hurt at the thought of rejecting her. Now that I have spent time with her, the bond is growing. For it to be there fully, we will have to complete the mating bond. But for now, it is there. Is this what having a mate feels like? Being able to feel their emotions once you meet your mate?
“I would like to talk with you first,” I tell her. “Sandu would also like to meet you and your wolf.”
“Your wolf she asks in clarification.
“Yea, he’s pretty cool, if I do say so myself,” I smile.
“Do you know what Sandu means?” Kira asks.
“His name means something?” I ask both my mate and my wolf.
‘Of course, my name means something, Sandu huffs at me. “Our mate is so smart to know that my
name has a meaning. He is proud of our mate.
Our mate, that has a nice ring to it. “No, I don’t. I can’t tell you what it means,” I tell her.
“I know what Sandu means. It means to protect,” she tells me.
Now Sandu is howling with joy and pride at our little mate.
“He’s so happy,” Kira smiles softly.
“Oh no, don’t inflate his ego anymore,” I joke. “You give him any more praise, he is going to force a shift just so he can cuddle you.”
She laughs at that. She then slaps a hand over her mouth as if she just committed a crime. orry, I just…” Kira trails off, unsure of what to say.
“It’s alright. I like your laugh,” I compliment. “If you don’t mind me asking, why didn’t your parents.
intervene with Connix?”
“My parents were killed in a rogue attack when I was fifteen. They said rogues, but the kill was too

clean to be a rogue kill. They had no other injuries on them besides a bite, ripping out their neck. she says as she stares down at her clenched fist. “My parents weren’t warriors. They worked the pack house, During an attack, they should have been safe in the pack house. Instead, they were found several streets over from the pack house.”
“You think that they left for some reason?” I ask curiously. Now I am intrigued by what could have happened.
“I don’t know why though. It was a school day. We went on lock down, I was safe. Danny is a year older than me. He would have been at the school too. We would have been safe. My parents started work at the pack house at 6:00 a.m., every day. They don’t get done until dinner,” she tells me.
“The only reason they would have left the safety of the pack house, would have been if someone was with them when they left or were told to leave?” I ask as I try to puzzle out what could have happened.
“But why would they leave?” Kira asks. I can see hurt and desperation to know the truth fill her eyes. She must have asked this question so many times.
*Ask if that bastard was already pursuing her, Sandu snarls in anger.
“Sandu wants to know if Connix was already pursuing you at this point,” I say aloud for my wolf.
“He had taken to stalking me, and maybe a few more,” she tells me. “But I think that I had it the
worst.”
Goddess, I hate to ask. I can feel her hurt at losing her parents, but I need to know. If he killed his own people to get to an underage female, we might be able to get the Alpha Council to do something. Personally, Sandu and I are hoping that we can hunt him down to kill him.
“Kira, one more question and then we can talk about whatever you want,” I tell. She nods her head at me. “Do you know if he had asked your parents to allow him to mark you before you turned eighteen?”
“He wouldn’t,” she answers quickly. “There are laws to protect those under eighteen. He couldn’t mark me until after I turned eighteen, the laws would not have allowed it.” Kira is losing confidence as she tries to deny that her former Alpha would have done something. But then she goes quiet and thinks about what had happened before her parents‘ death.
I think about what she said. Yes, there are laws to protect those under eighteen. Specific i state if someone older than eighteen marks one under eighteen, the marker could be put to death. There is a clause in there about if a parent agrees to the bond, the older could mark the younger. It’s an old clause that was used mainly for arranged mate bonds.
If Devin Connix had wanted Kira as his mate, he could have asked her parents for permission to mark her early. If they had refused, there was a good chance that he had them killed. He probably

had them killed in a fit of anger when they denied him what he wanted, Prom what I understand about the former Alpha, and meeting him, he would not have taken being denied.
So, with them dead, the moment Kira turned eighteen, he could mark her.
“He had my parents killed,” Kira growls. “His head will end up on a pike and i will put it there
myself.”
“Only if I get to help,” I smirk dangerously.
“Of course, can’t leave my protector behind,” Kira smirks at me.
“You are beautiful, when you are terrifying.” I say like a lovesick fool.
Kira laughs at me. This time she does not cover her mouth. “So, tell me about your parents,” Kira says as she settles back into her bed.
“I lost my mom in a rogue attack a few years back. Since then, it’s just been me and dad,” I say with a shrug.
“Come on, I gave you more than that,” she scoffs at me.
“What can I say?” I smirk, trying to bait her into asking me questions.
“What is your dad like?” Kira growls at me playfully.
“Dad’s awesome. He lost his wolf shortly after mom died. I think he knew he would not get a second chance mate, nor did he want one. He handed over a lot of Beta duties then. I’ve been acting Beta for over a year and a half. Became the official Beta a few weeks ago when the twins took over,” I explain to her.
“Tell me about your pack?” Kira asks with a fond smile.
And so, I do. I tell her about my life here and then she tells me growing up in her pack.
