Chapter 13 You Could’ve Just Agreed So I Wouldn’t Have to Be Rough

Becky smiled politely and declined, “I already have a place to stay, so I won’t be moving back.”

Lilian instantly lit up.

“That’s actually good. Young people want their own space and don’t like living with their elders. We understand and support that. We’re still family, so come visit whenever you can.”

Lilian’s words sounded nice on the surface.

Becky matched her tone just as smoothly.

“I will.”

Yvonne snorted. “Where are you staying? Don’t tell me you asked my brother for a place. A luxury apartment? Or a villa? Becky, have some shame. Don’t go asking for things that don’t belong to you.”

Becky said, “No one’s stopping you from keeping your mouth shut.”

“You!”

Yvonne stood up, ready to start a full-blown fight, but Henry pushed her back down.

“What are you doing? You have to be in everything? Becky’s business is her own. Don’t cause more trouble.”

Yvonne protested, “Why can’t I say something? Becky’s shameless. She used disgusting tricks to marry my brother, and now that they’re getting divorced, she wants to take our family’s money. That’s just too easy.”

Henry maintained his authoritative tone. “I told you to stop talking. Are you deaf?”

“Dad!”

“It’s only right we give Becky some compensation. Don’t stir up more trouble. How they negotiate this is up to your brother.”

Lilian agreed, “Your father’s right. Let your brother handle this himself. We’ll stay out of it.”

Yvonne looked at Becky like she wanted to tear her apart.

Becky sat there calmly, watching them argue like it had nothing to do with her.

Once they’d finally quieted down, she stood up and said, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be going.”

She didn’t expect Xavier to give her a single cent.

Becky didn’t even look at their expressions and walked straight out.

Behind her, Yvonne huffed, “Mom, Dad, did you see how arrogant she is? Why would Xavier give her anything? She doesn’t deserve it.”

Henry and Lilian exchanged glances and stayed silent.

Three days later, Xavier came back.

He seemed busy and stayed on the phone in his study the whole time.

Becky showered, changed into her fuzzy pajamas, and paced outside the study door.

She waited until the talking inside stopped before knocking.

A deep, low male voice came from inside. “Come in.”

Becky pushed the door open.

Xavier was leaning back in his leather chair, eyes closed, long fingers kneading his brow.

He looked troubled.

Becky paused.

She thought, This man was born privileged. In just three years, he built Glory Corp into a powerhouse. He’s now the most powerful man in Dracovia.

Even without the Bolton family, he could carve out his own empire.

He’s incredibly capable.

What could a man like him possibly be worried about?

Then she realized.

His biggest problem was not being able to be with his crush.

And the one standing in the way was her.

She stepped in front of his desk and said, “Xavier, don’t stress. We’re about to get divorced. You’ll be able to be with Yulia.”

Xavier moved his hand away and opened his eyes. They were icy cold.

“Becky, what the hell is wrong with you? Why are you bringing her up for no reason?”

Becky saw he was in a bad mood and didn’t argue. Mostly, she just wanted to finalize the divorce quickly and didn’t want to upset him.

“Xavier, I’m being serious. I’m not joking or messing around. I’m telling you this sincerely. The month is up. Tomorrow’s Monday. Let’s go finalize the divorce.”

Xavier said, “Get out.”

Becky felt like he was impossible to talk to and got mad.

tomorrow!”

Her voice was loud.

Xavier’s expression grew even colder than before.

“Fine. Tomorrow morning at eight. Just like you want.”

Becky froze for a second, then let go of him and smoothed out his wrinkled shirt.

“If you’d agreed earlier, I wouldn’t have had to be so rough.”

Xavier spat out a single word again. “Out.”

This time, Becky left without protest and even closed the door behind her.

“Don’t overwork yourself. Get some rest. We’ve got to be up early tomorrow.”

The key point was getting up early.

As her smiling face disappeared behind the door, Xavier pressed his fingers to his forehead again.

Becky skipped all the way back to her room and rolled around on her bed in pure joy.

As Xavier passed by her door, he could hear cheerful singing from inside and almost walked in to smack her.

Becky was so excited she didn’t fall asleep until nearly dawn. Afraid she’d oversleep, she set an alarm.

As soon as it rang, she got out of bed.

Xavier wasn’t downstairs, and she had a bad feeling.

He’s not gonna bail on me, is he?

She called him, but the phone rang forever without anyone picking up.

She lost her appetite, barely ate two bites of breakfast, and headed straight for the courthouse by taxi.

She got there early and the place wasn’t open yet, so she bought a stuffed egg pancake from a street vendor and sat outside eating it.

As staff members arrived for work, they all glanced at her.

“Hey, what a pretty girl. She must be here to register a marriage.”

One of the women working the divorce desk looked up. “Wrong. She’s here for a divorce.”

“How do you know?”

“I’ve seen her before. She’s hard to forget-so pretty, especially those big eyes. Her husband too, he’s ridiculously good-looking. I remember them. Looks like their one-month cooling-off period is up

already.”

She muttered to herself as she followed her coworkers through the front gate.

Xavier got out of his car and saw Becky sitting on the steps, eating that pancake without a care in the world.

He stood there from a distance, just watching.

Becky had changed.

He couldn’t see any of that old affection in her eyes.

It was strange-like a running faucet suddenly getting shut off.

Is it really possible for someone to just switch off their feelings like that?

He didn’t get it.

Becky wanted a divorce and wasn’t clinging to him. By all logic, he should be happy.

But for some reason, he wasn’t.

He could’ve done this earlier, but dragged it out for a whole month before bringing her here to finalize things.

His excuse to himself was that marriage wasn’t a game. He might not love Becky, but he’d touched her and married her, so he had to be a responsible man.

Becky could act on impulse. He couldn’t.

With a one-month cooling-off period, they should both use it to calm down-especially Becky.

He wanted to give her time to think it through, to change her mind.

But it seemed like she didn’t need it.

Becky looked up, saw Xavier, and waved at him with a bright smile.

Her whole face lit up, eyes curved like flower petals, glowing with radiant energy.

Xavier stared at her for a long while, a faint, unconscious smile tugging at the corners of his lips.

He actually smiled.

Becky lit up even more and jogged over to him, stopping right in front of him.

“Xavier, your smile is really handsome. You should smile more instead of always scowling.”

Of course, she wouldn’t get to see that smile again.

He’d be smiling at Yulia from now on.

The woman he truly loved.

Xavier looked into her eyes, his Adam’s apple bobbing. Then he said, “Becky, we don’t have to get divorced.”
