Chapter 20 A Not-So-Little Secret

“Becky…”

The old nickname slipped from Xavier’s mouth without him realizing.

Becky paused, a strange itch tugging at her chest like a cat’s paw.

“I’m leaving. Don’t walk me out.”

She bolted. By the time Xavier chased after her, she was already gone.

Back inside, he spotted her white puffer jacket on the couch.

He grabbed it, turned, and headed to the garage.

At the edge of the neighborhood, Becky finally realized she hadn’t put on her coat.

Freezing.

She hugged her arms tight, pacing by the gate, debating whether to go back or just call a cab.

So damn cold.

How could she do something so stupid?

Handsome guys really do turn people into idiots.

Suddenly, a black Bentley pulled up beside her.

The door opened, and a long leg stepped out.

Becky’s gaze moved upward and landed on Xavier’s handsome face.

He walked over, coat in hand, and wrapped it tightly around her.

“Are you stupid or what?”

Becky couldn’t argue.

Because yeah she felt pretty stupid.

–

Xavier took her hand. It was like ice.

Becky wasn’t used to being this close to a handsome man. For her, even holding hands felt too intimate.

Her last boyfriend was someone she met through a matchmaker. They hadn’t even held hands.

They were engaged already, but when she went in for premarital checkups, she’d found out she was infertile.

That’s when the engagement fell apart.

Sensing her resistance, Xavier held her hands tighter, sandwiching them between his palms.

Holy crap. No wonder the original Becky had been so obsessed. Drugging him just to lock him down? Not surprising at all.

Thankfully, Xavier quickly ushered her into the car, ending the painfully awkward moment.

Fu Tan started the engine.

“Give me the address.”

Becky scrambled to come up with something and blurted out the name of a random neighborhood.

It was close to where she actually lived – just a five-minute walk away.

Xavier frowned. “You’re renting?”

Becky nodded. “Yeah.”

“Cancel it. Move into Purple Pavilion. There’s an empty unit there with furniture and appliances all set up.”

Before they were married, Xavier had lived at Purple Pavilion.

After marriage, he moved to Westview Pavilion.

Becky was tempted. She wanted it.

But she couldn’t.

If she moved in, it’d be as good as telling Xavier about the pregnancy.

Heart aching, she refused. “The place I live now is fine. Nice neighborhood, friendly neighbors. I’m not moving.”

Xavier didn’t understand her.

“You wanted a place before. Why not take it now?”

“That was then. You didn’t give it to me. Now I don’t want it. If you feel bad, just compensate me with money.”

She shamelessly asked.

Xavier was quiet for a moment. “How much?”

Becky turned to him, eyes sparkling, lips twitching upward.

She calculated how much it would take to raise a kid.

Five million? Ten million? Or be bold – a hundred million?

Afraid he’d flip out, she cautiously held up five fingers.

“Five million?”

“Mm-hmm.”

Xavier let out a laugh. “Dream on.”

Becky instantly deflated like a popped balloon.

“Xavier, are you messing with me?”

She knew he’d never fork over that easily.

He said nothing.

An hour later, the car pulled up in front of the complex Becky had named.

She turned to him. “Thanks for the ride. Bye!”

At least he’d transferred her two hundred grand.

For normal people, that was a lot.

She was genuinely grateful.

Other than Mary, only Xavier had given her money.

She just couldn’t bring herself to hate him.

Xavier nodded but didn’t drive off.

He was waiting for her to go in first.

But Becky didn’t even have a card for this complex she couldn’t get in.

—

Luckily, a woman showed up. Becky followed her in, then hid in a corner, waiting for Xavier’s car to leave before running toward her real place.

Back home, she got a new notification.

Another transfer from Xavier this time for one million.

—

Becky rolled around on the bed in delight.

Say what you will — Xavier was generous.

No five million, but a million wasn’t bad at all.

More than enough to live comfortably for a while.

And honestly, she took it without guilt.

She was carrying his kid. Spending his money was only fair.

One day.

Sharon came over and saw the mountain of baby supplies in the apartment. Her jaw dropped.

Her gaze slid from Becky’s face down to her belly.

There was already a slight curve.

She’d thought Becky had just gained weight.

So this was…

Sharon grabbed Becky’s shoulders, nearly shook her, but caught herself just in time. Gently, she eased her down onto the ratty old couch.

Squatted in front of her. “Tell me. You’re pregnant, aren’t you?”

Becky nodded with a wide grin.

Sharon gasped hard enough to pull a muscle. She looked like she wanted to punch someone.
