Chapter 27 A Pregnant Mystery
“If your wife were heavily pregnant, would you let her go to work alone every day, come home by herself, and even do the grocery shopping?”
Jacob thought about the time Jose asked him for a car a few days ago, saying it was to chase someone.
No way. Was he chasing a married woman? A pregnant one at that?
“What the hell, Jose! Who are you after?”
Jose shot him a look. “Shut up and answer the question.”
Jacob said, “Only a real jerk would do that! Even I, a total flirt, couldn’t be that heartless. If my wife were pregnant, I’d treat her like a queen. I’d go everywhere with her, let alone make her work and cook.”
Jose nodded seriously. He felt the same way.
Something was definitely wrong with Becky’s so-called husband.
Jacob leaned in with a sly look. “Jose, are you chasing a pregnant woman? Someone who’s married?”
Jose nodded.
“Are you kidding me?!”
Jacob couldn’t hold back another curse.
This was like dropping a bomb.
“So you’ve been into the same girl all along. First she was single, then married, then divorced, now married again- and pregnant.”
Jose frowned. That did seem to be the case.
Jacob had to admit, Jose had the worst luck.
Becky had picked two guys already and neither time was it him.
He let out a long sigh. “Jose, maybe it’s time to chase someone else?”
Someone else?
Not a chance.
Jose kicked Jacob. “Get lost.”
Jacob smacked the footprint on his leg and scooted right back next to him.
“So what you’re saying is Becky’s husband treats her like crap?”
Just hearing the word “husband” made Jose furious. “That guy doesn’t deserve the title. He’s trash. Absolute

scum.
Funny how his good-looking best friend turned out to be such a hopeless romantic.
Of all the people to fall for, it had to be someone who didn’t like him back.
Classic case of asking for heartbreak.
Still, Jacob felt obligated to point something out. “Jose, you do know what you’re doing right now counts as… being the other guy. You’re breaking up a family.”
He thought Jose would blow up. But Jose just crossed his legs and leaned back, totally unfazed. “If Becky had married a decent guy, I’d wish her the best. But she married a bastard. I’m not going to sit back and watch her suffer.”
Jacob said weakly, “What if she likes bastards? What if she’s into the abuse?”
Jose’s foot came flying again, but Jacob dodged this time.
“I’m serious. Think about it. Becky used to be obsessed with Xavier-drugged the guy, remember? Maybe she’s got a messed-up brain like yours. Maybe she’s into guys who treat her like crap.”
Jose jumped up and kicked him again. “What the hell are you saying? Jacob, you wanna die?”
Jacob shrank back and said nothing more.
There was no waking someone pretending to sleep. He knew better than to argue with someone this deep in denial.
After kicking him, Jose slumped onto the couch in the shadows and said nothing.
Jacob figured he’d hurt his friend’s feelings and was just about to apologize when Jose spoke.
“Becky’s changed.”
“What?”
“How can someone who claims to love a person just suddenly get a divorce? She went through all that trouble to marry Xavier, and two months later, she leaves him? Then she turns around and marries someone else-gets pregnant?”
Now that he mentioned it, Jacob also found it strange.
“Did you ask her why she divorced Xavier?”
“She said Xavier didn’t like her. Didn’t want to tie himself down.”
Jacob frowned. “That doesn’t sound like something Becky would say.”
“Exactly. And she doesn’t show any sadness when she talks about Xavier. Nothing. No emotion at all.”
“Maybe she really did fall for someone else?”

Jose’s handsome brows furrowed.
He didn’t understand Becky anymore. Something about her just felt… off.
By the end of July, the weather was scorching.
Her due date was getting closer day by day.
Becky was afraid she’d go into labor suddenly, so she wanted to move into the hospital early.
She huffed and puffed as she packed several big bags, then had Sharon go with her to the hospital.
But the doctor told her there were no signs of labor and they wouldn’t admit her yet.
Since she’d chosen a natural birth, and beds were tight, they couldn’t keep her without a medical reason.
Sharon begged for a while, explained Becky’s situation, but it didn’t help.
They had no choice but to huff and puff all the way home again.
Sharon didn’t feel safe leaving Becky alone, so she moved in with her-just in case labor started suddenly, she’d be there to take her to the hospital.
Becky was so touched she could cry.
She hugged her and whined, “Sharon, you’re the best!”
