Chapter 45 Take This Job and Nope
“Poor Sharon!”
“She brought it on herself when she talked back to Mr. Brendon. Now he won’t let up.”
“Lesson learned, never talk back to Mr. Brendon. He’ll make your life a living hell in seconds.”

“Exactly! I heard Sharon handed in her resignation, but Mr. Brendon’s holding it hostage. She can’t quit, can’t not show up, and every time she comes in, she gets chewed out. How’s that not a living hell?”
Brendon finally ran out of steam, and vocabulary. He waved her off. “Get lost.”
Sharon walked out of the office, numb, met by a crowd of sympathetic stares.
She returned to her desk and sat in a daze..
A coworker reminded her she still had a report to finish.
She didn’t move.
Not doing it. Not doing anything anymore. No matter how hard she worked, Brendon the jackass would find fault and scream at her anyway.
Why bother working hard for zero credit? Screw it. She was done.
When the clock hit closing time, she grabbed her bag and bolted–didn’t stay a second longer.
Brendon opened his door and called out, “Sharon! Where’s Sharon?”
One of the employees timidly answered, “She left.”
Brendon frowned. “She left before the boss did? She’s dead.”
Everyone nearby shrank back and ducked their heads, pretending to be super busy.
Sharon, meanwhile, was venting her soul out to Becky.
“Becky, I’m gonna die! Seriously, Brendon is killing me. That bastard is targeting me on purpose–I’m losing my mind!”
Becky asked, “Why is he targeting you? Maybe… he likes you?”
Sharon looked horrified. “No way! Don’t scare me like that!”
“Then why doesn’t he go after anyone elsé–only you?”
Sharon fell silent. That’s a really weird way to like someone. Pretty twisted, actually.
“No, no, no! There’s no way he likes me. Definitely not!”
Becky tilted her head, thinking. Then why is he so focused on you?”
Sharon sulked for a while, then wandered off to play with James.
“My godson gets cuter by the day! I haven’t seen him for a few days and he’s already more handsome.”

Becky lifted her chin proudly. “Of course. Look who’s raising him.”
They were still playing with James when Becky’s phone rang.

She answered, “Mr. John, what’s up?”
Mr. John’s voice boomed, “Aren’t you supposed to be back at work?”
“I haven’t had enough rest.”
“No more resting! I’ve got people lined up out the door asking for you!”
“Let them keep lining up then. I’m not leaving my baby. I’m not ready to go back to work.”
John was getting desperate. “That won’t do! You have to come in!”
“My legs are attached to my body. You can’t control where I go.”
He instantly regretted not signing an employment contract with Becky; he had no way to rein her in.
He softened his tone. “Come on, please. Just come in–I’ll raise your commission.”
Becky raised an eyebrow. “How much?”
“Sixty–forty,” Mr. John offered.
“Twenty–eighty,” Becky shot back.
“You trying to kill me?” he wailed.
Becky idly picked at her nails. “Forget it, then.”
She moved to hang up.
Mr. John gritted his teeth and shouted, “Fine, fine–eighty–twenty! Come in tomorrow!”
Becky’s eyes curved into a sly smile. “Alright, but the schedule stays the same. I still need time with my son.” Mr. John reluctantly agreed.
After she hung up, Sharon teased her. “Look at you! Going from fifty–fifty to eighty–twenty–boss moves, babe!”
Becky arched an eyebrow. “Of course! Gotta look out for myself–I’ve got a kid to raise.”
Happy for her friend’s career win, Sharon still couldn’t help but feel worried for herself.
She was stuck–wanting to quit but unable to leave.
In her mind, she cussed Brendon out all over again.
The next day, Becky handed James over to the nanny and headed to work.
The moment she reached the entrance of the traditional medicine clinic, she froze. A long line stretched down the block. Had Mr. John announced some kind of freebie? Were they all really here for herbal remedies?

She had just taken a few steps forward when someone shouted, “Ms. Quinn is here! Look! It’s Ms. Quinn!”
Becky jumped, startled, and clutched her chest.
The long line began to stir and shift, snaking its way toward her and surrounding her completely.
“Ms. Quinn, you’re finally here!”
“Ms. Quinn, please see me first–I’m dying!”
“Ms. Quinn, check on my mom first!”
Instead of being annoyed, Becky’s lips curled into a smile. She felt a surge of pride.
Never thought I’d become the kind of legendary traditional medicine expert that everyone clamors for! Hahaha, this felt amazing.
Becky and John worked to get everyone lined up and registered; they handled the crowd in order.
John glanced at the time and realized there was no way they’d get through everyone that day. He asked. some to return another time.
Becky worked nonstop through the morning, too busy to even check on James. Lunch was just a bite of bread in between appointments.
Thankfully, she’d prepared ahead of time, James had plenty of milk stocked, and there was formula at home. They were already starting to wean him; soon, formula would be enough.
After ten straight hours of consultations, she was sore and exhausted when she finally headed home.
Just as she reached the entrance to her complex, a black Rolls–Royce rolled to a stop in front of her; out stepped Xavier’s long legs.
Becky’s eyes zeroed in on his legs. Damn. So long. And those suit pants fit perfectly, too, straight as a ruler.
