Rewriting the Love Story After Traveling Into the Novel
Chapter 53 You Had One Job, Xavier
There stood Xavier, tall and lean, his figure blocking a wide swath of light at the doorway.

His eyes slanted slightly at the corners; his lips pressed into a thin, unreadable line.
He carried himself with a quiet elegance and cool detachment. Becky froze for a beat, then greeted John like nothing had happened. “Mr. John, I’m heading out for lunch. Want me to bring you anything?”
John glanced toward the door, adjusted his reading glasses, and waved her off. “You two go cat; don’t worry about this old man.”
Becky replied. “Mr. John, you’ve got it wrong. I’m not close with him.”
Xavier stepped inside.
“You had a baby with me and we’re not close?”
Becky didn’t flinch at being called out. “That’s my child, not yours. Don’t go claiming him.”
“You had a baby on your own? Was James immaculately conceived?”
Becky went quiet. She was usually quick with comebacks, but somehow Xavier always got the better of her. So annoying!
John raised an eyebrow and gave Xavier a once–over. So this was the kid’s father, well, at least the guy was easy on the eyes.
Becky couldn’t be bothered with Xavier. She turned and walked out of the clinic, heading to a nearby fast- food joint.
After ordering and sitting down with her tray, Xavier slid into the seat across from her.
She glanced up at him, then focused on her food.
Xavier didn’t say a word; he just watched her.
Eventually, Becky looked up and asked, “You want some?”
Xavier smiled and shook his head. “I’ve got a dinner meeting later.”
Becky nodded knowingly. Of course, why would anyone choose fast food when they’ve got a fancy meal waiting?
She ate quickly. In no time, she was done. After wiping her mouth, she stood and walked out of the
restaurant.
Then she suddenly remembered something.
She turned and looked at Xavier. “Estella went home–she had something to deal with. She probably told you. She worked for a month and a half, that’s thirty thousand; then there’s Abigail’s twenty thousand. I just transferred one–point–zero–five million to you–one million is what you sent me before.”
Ding. Xavier looked down at his phone and saw the transfer notification.
“You really want to keep things this clear–cut?”

Becky nodded seriously. “Yes. It should be clear. From now on, you don’t need to pay Abigail’s salary–I’ll handle it. As for the rest of what I owe you, I’ll pay it back slowly.”
She was supporting James on her own; she couldn’t return all the money just yet. Once she saved up, she would.
“Becky, raising a child is also my responsibility”
“No need,” Becky said. “He’s my child. I don’t need your money.”
At first, she’d thought it made sense–James was Xavier’s child too, so if he gave her money, she’d accept it.
But eventually, taking from others only made things more complicated.
Better to not take anything at all.
She could take care of James herself.
With that, she turned and walked briskly back toward the clinic; her steps light, her stride confident.
Kevin came jogging over. “Mr. Bolton, everyone’s already there. We should head out.”
Xavier glanced back at the clinic before walking toward the car.
In the car, Xavier suddenly asked, “What do you do if your girlfriend refuses to spend your money? Any tricks to get her to?”
Perpetual bachelor Kevin replied, “I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Randall chuckled. “My wife holds all my pay cards. Even if I wanted to spend money, I couldn’t. Your situation doesn’t apply to me.”
Xavier looked at Randall with a touch of envy.
Kevin turned his head, face lit with curiosity. “Ms. Quinn won’t spend your money?”
Xavier kept his eyes on his files, clearly not in the mood to talk.
Kevin curled his lip. So that’s a yes. Imagine, someone stressed out because they couldn’t give away their money. No one would believe it.
Xavier might’ve been staring at the documents, but his mind was elsewhere–thinking about how to get Becky to accept his money.
Funny how the tables have turned.
Back then, he refused to give; now he was practically begging her to take it.
Toward evening, a man walked into the clinic, wrapped head to toe, with only a pair of eyes showing.
He was tall–easily over six–foot–two–with bright, expressive eyes.
He slid into the seat across from Becky, full of mystery.
Becky looked at him in surprise.

The man cut her off. “Don’t worry about who I am. I’m just here to get treated. Let me tell you what’s going on–I have terrible insomnia. Can’t sleep through the night. Got any remedies for that?”
Becky noted the deep purplish circles under his eyes.
“How long has this been going on?”
“Years.”
Becky frowned. It really did sound serious.
“Take off your mask. I need a better look.”
“No way!”
The man clutched his mask.
Becky didn’t press him.
“Stick out your tongue.”
He did.
“Right hand.”
He held it out, and Becky took his pulse.
“It’s pretty severe.”
“Told you I haven’t had a good night’s sleep in years.”
Becky’s eyes curved slightly in amusement. “Well, it’s a miracle you’re still alive.”
The man froze, then stared at her.
Becky frowned slightly.
Having a strange man stare at her like that–definitely uncomfortable.
“Keep staring and I’ll dig your eyes out.”
The man burst out laughing. When he smiled, his almond–shaped eyes gleamed like rippling water.
“So fierce, Ms. Quinn.”
Becky didn’t think much of it. She could tell he didn’t mean anything by it, so she lowered her head and started writing out a prescription.
