Chapter 55 James Says No to Dad
She noticed a line of small text next to the male celebrity’s face. Shane.
“Ah! That’s it!”
Becky blurted it out.

She’d seen him in a drama before, he played the male lead. She’d watched it while she was pregnant. It had been so long that she’d forgotten.
She had this quirk, if she couldn’t remember something, it would gnaw at her. She’d obsess over it, lose sleep over it, until she figured it out.
Now, smiling in relief, she placed the yogurt into the cart.
Finally, she could sleep well tonight.
While she wasn’t looking, Xavier quietly took the yogurt back out of the cart.
Becky didn’t even notice anything was missing–not until they got to the checkout.
Xavier pulled out his card to pay, but Becky stopped him and flashed her phone’s payment code at the cashier.
Xavier awkwardly put his card away.
There was a lot of stuff, two full shopping bags.
Becky started to pick them up but quickly realized how heavy they were.
She grabbed the shopping cart and dashed off. “I’ll return the cart!”
And just like that, she got out of carrying anything.
Xavier picked up both bags with ease, one in each hand.
They walked side by side out of the supermarket, with the Rolls–Royce trailing behind.
Becky glanced at it and whispered, “Should we just take the car?”
Xavier actually enjoyed walking with her like this. He shifted the bags slightly and said, “Let’s walk. The moonlight’s beautiful tonight.”
Becky looked up.
The sky was dark and heavy, like it was about to rain. What moonlight?
When they got to the building downstairs, Becky reached out. “Hand me the bags. Thanks.”
Xavier looked at her, then bypassed her completely and walked inside.
Becky froze for a second, then hurried to catch up.
“Hey, you can stop here.”

Xavier kept walking–his tall, straight frame completely out of place in the run–down apartment building.
He pressed the elevator button.
Turning to Becky, he said, “I want to see James. It’s been days; I’ve missed him.”
James went quict. Do you even hear yourself? I’m still a baby, and you’re already using me like this?
Becky rolled her eyes. “Huh. Didn’t think you were all that fond of him.”
“A father’s love is deep; not always visible.”
“If it’s not visible, is it even love?”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
Becky responded with two dry, sarcastic chuckles.
The elevator arrived.
Xavier walked in like he owned the place. Becky curled her lip and stepped in beside him, pressing the button for her floor.
At her door, Becky took out her keys.
Abigail opened the door, surprised to see Xavier but still greeted him politely.
Xavier gave her a slight nod in return.
Abigail was in the middle of feeding James.
Becky quickly changed shoes and rushed over. “James, Mommy’s home!”
The baby blinked up at her with wide, curious eyes.
Becky melted instantly.
“Oh, my sweet boy! You’re so cute! Mommy misses you after just a little while–what am I going to do with myself?”
Xavier carried the bags into the kitchen.
Hearing Becky’s words, he paused.
He turned to see her leaning over James, eyes shining, her face glowing with warmth and love.
He couldn’t look away.
Becky asked, “Abigail, was he good today?”
Abigail smiled. “Very good. He eats, then sleeps; wakes up, then eats again. Doesn’t cry or fuss. Even when he pees, he just grumbles a bit.”
Abigail thought this was the easiest baby she’d ever taken care of.
Becky’s lips curved into a smile. She stood up–and locked eyes with Xavier.

Xavier quickly looked away and said casually, “Where do I put the groceries?”

Becky didn’t have time to think too hard about that look he’d just given her. “Just leave them there. Abigail will sort it out later.”
She went to wash her hands, then returned and took James into her arms.
Abigail, now free, headed into the kitchen to sort and store the groceries.
Xavier stepped closer to Becky and glanced down at James.
He hadn’t seen the baby in a few days, and somehow, James looked different.
Not quite as ugly as before.
James pondered. Wow. Thanks, dad.
Becky played with James for a bit, then turned to Xavier. “Go wash your hands.”
“Why?”
“You said you missed your son, didn’t you? I’ll let you hold him.”
Xavier hesitated, then got up.
After washing up, he returned and Becky placed James gently into his arms.
“I’m going to make myself a bowl of noodles. You’ve already eaten, right? I’m not making extra.”
“I haven’t eaten.“–
Becky glanced back at him but said nothing; she walked into the kitchen.
Xavier looked down, meeting James‘ big round eyes.
He reached out and gave the baby’s cheek a gentle squeeze.
Huh. Soft. Not bad. He did it again.
And again…
And then, successfully made James cry.
Loud, heartbreaking wails, with fat tears rolling down his cheeks.
Xavier went quiet
“What are you crying for? Cut it out!”
James went quiet. No! I won’t!
He cried even louder. Mom! Help!
The kitchen fan was on, so Becky didn’t hear a thing.
Abigail came out. “Oh no, why’s he crying?”

Xavier quickly dropped James into the crib and washed his hands of the whole situation. “He’s being. dramatic.”
Abigail walked over and checked. “Why are his cheeks so red?”
Xavier shrugged. “How would I know? Maybe he’s hot.”
Abigail gave him a suspicious look but said nothing.
