Becky had a nagging feeling that Xavier had used force on James while they were gone.
Xavier staggered into the kitchen. It was a tiny space, and the moment he stepped inside, it felt impossibly cramped. Becky turned around to grab something and bumped right into his chest, making her wince and rub her nose.
“What are you doing in here?”
Xavier stood awkwardly. “Just wanted to see if you needed any help.”
“I don’t. Get out, you’re in the way.”
Snubbed, Xavier scratched his nose; but instead of leaving, he stayed put behind her.
He watched the petite woman move with practiced ease–stir–frying, adding water, dropping in the noodles. Every motion was fluid, like second nature.
Before long, a pot of simple but delicious–looking noodle soup with vegetables and shredded pork was ready.
Xavier swallowed hard.
Becky divided the noodles into three bowls, topped them with chopped scallions, and shoved one into Xavier’s hands. “Take this.”
“Oh.”
He brought the bowl to the dining table. When he turned back around, he saw Becky walking out with two larger bowls.
His eyelid twitched, a pang of guilt hitting him. Since leaving him, this woman had not only learned to cook, she’d become so tough.
He walked over and took the bowls from her hands.
Becky raised a brow; at least the man wasn’t completely clueless. He wasn’t the type to just sit back and wait to be served.
She turned around to grab the chopsticks.
Abigail didn’t have the guts to sit at the table with Xavier. The pressure was just too much.
She took her bowl to the coffee table instead. Becky had no such qualms–she was starving. She picked up her bowl and started slurping away.
Xavier glanced at her, a faint smile tugging at his lips, then lowered his head and began to eat.
He had to admit, Becky could really cook. Even the simplest bowl of noodles tasted amazing in her hands.
After dinner, Abigail did the dishes.
Becky bathed James.
Xavier leaned against the bathroom doorframe, watching the capable woman work. “Let me do it.”

Becky responded without turning her head, “No need. You’ve seen your son, he’s caten; now you can go.”
There was no place for him here.
She was only being this tolerant because he was James‘ biological father.
Still, Xavier didn’t leave. He stuck around until James had finished his bath and Becky had taken hers; only then did he slowly get up and leave.
Later, lying in bed, Becky heard the thunderous roar of heavy rain, lightning flashing outside.
She got up and pulled back the curtains to peek downstairs, just in time to see Xavier duck into his car. The vehicle pulled away into the downpour.
She pressed her lips together, then went back to bed.
The next day, Kevin walked into the office and froze. Mr. Bolton was smiling. Actually smiling!
Leaning back in his chair, the corners of his mouth were turned up.
Kevin’s eye twitched. He looked like a young man in love.
“Mr. Bolton?”
He called out tentatively.
Xavier’s smile vanished instantly, his expression snapping back into its usual stoic mask so fast Kevin almost thought he’d imagined it.
He placed a stack of documents in front of him. “This is all the information on Company M. Please review it.”
“Mm. You can go.”
Kevin left the office with a puzzled look.
Right before Becky’s shift ended, someone came in, it was that same strange man from a few days ago.
Still completely covered up, only his peach blossom eyes showing.
Becky raised an eyebrow. “Your prescription should’ve lasted half a month. What are you doing here today?”
Logan gave a small smile. “I’m not here for myself.”
“Oh? Then what are you here for?”
“I want to ask you to travel out of town to treat someone.”
“Sorry, I probably won’t be able to go.”
Logan crossed one leg over the other, lounging lazily.
“I’ll pay you a lot,”
Becky glanced up at him. How much is ‘a lot‘?

Logan watched her expression and said. “My mother is very frail; she’s been bedridden for years. We’ve seen countless doctors with no success. If you can cure her, I’ll give you 7000000 dollars, no, 140000 dollars.”
Becky looked him up and down. Is this guy serious? Is he really that rich? What if he’s a scammer?
Both times he’d come, he’d been completely bundled up. Something’s off. What if it’s a trap? What if they lure me out of town to rob me, or worse? Or maybe they’re part of some shady organization that plans to kidnap me and force me to break the law?
Her mind spun rapidly, eyes filled with suspicion as she stared at Logan.
“I’m not going!”
Logan uncrossed his legs and sat up straight. All of a sudden, he grabbed Becky’s hand.
“Ms. Quinn, please think about it. I can really pay you. If you don’t care about money, I can offer you something else. I don’t have much, but my older brothers do. As long as you can cure my mother…”
He has a whole crew! This is a one–way trip! Terrified, Becky yanked her hand back, shot to her feet, and kicked him square in the chest.
Logan hadn’t been expecting it; the blow knocked him flat on the ground. He was stunned.
Becky shouted fiercely, “You pervert! I’m married, you hear me? Better watch yourself, my husband’s not someone you wanna mess with. He’s mean!”
Logan sat there dazed for a moment. Did that woman really just kick me? What the heck?
He stared blankly for a while before trying to explain. “You’ve misunderstood, I didn’t mean it like that…”
