Chapter 57 I’ll Kick You Again

“Hah! Grabbing my hand like that and thinking an explanation would help? You perv! I’m here to treat patients, not get mixed up in that kind of mess. Get out!”
Logan stared at the ceiling, speechless. I am such a superstar, every teenage girl’s dream guy. Dozens would kill for the chance to hold my hand. It was infuriating!
And yet Becky had lumped him in with perverts and creeps.
Still, Becky had skills; for the sake of his mother, he’d put up with it.
He got up and calmly dusted himself off.
“Ms. Quinn…
“Stay away from me!” Becky took two steps back, on guard.
Logan had no choice but to explain from a distance. “I really don’t mean anything like that. You’ve misunderstood.”
“Leave!”
“Ms. Quinn…”
“Get out!”
Logan was chased out and raked a frustrated hand through his hair.
“Ugh! How could she misunderstand me like that? This is ridiculous, I’m the one who usually gets misunderstood by others, not the one being misunderstood!”
He kicked a rock by the roadside.
Inside, Becky let out a deep breath. Scammers are everywhere these days, coming right to your doorstep.
She’d seen plenty of news stories online about young women being lured to some remote location, only to be trafficked overseas.
Once there, they were trapped in a living nightmare. The pretty ones were forced into prostitution; the plain ones, the older ones, stripped of all their money, had their organs harvested, and their bodies dumped into the sea.
You can’t afford not to be cautious. 140000 dollars, huh? More like that’s what they’d get for selling me. Well… I guess I’m not bad–looking, She’d never travel out of town with a stranger.
After tidying up, Becky stepped outside and cautiously glanced around.
A hand suddenly landed on her shoulder from behind.
“Ah!”
She let out a scream loud enough to wake the dead and instinctively took off running.
Xavier grabbed her arm just in time.

Secing that it was Xavier, she breathed a sigh of relief and patted her chest. “You scared me half to death! What are you doing sneaking up behind me like that?”
Xavier was still holding her hand.
“I came from that way. When did you get so jumpy?”
Becky pouted and yanked her hand back.
“It’s nighttime, and you popped up from behind, of course I got scared.”
In truth, she hadn’t fully recovered from the stalker incident. That weird guy just now had triggered all her alarm bells.
Seeing that she’d genuinely been frightened, Xavier softened his tone. “Sorry.”
Becky waved him off. “Forget it. I’m heading home.“.
“I’ll walk you.”
“No need.”
“It’s already dark, aren’t you scared?”
Becky hesitated. What if that guy was still lurking somewhere?
She glanced up at Xavier. “Fine.”
A smile tugged at the corner of Xavier’s lips as he reached out and took her hand. “There–nothing to be afraid of now.”
Becky pressed her lips together; being led by him did make her feel safer.
So she didn’t pull away.
From a distance, Randall followed them in the car.
He couldn’t help sighing. Back then, he’d thought this young couple had rushed into divorce too quickly. He’d wanted to stop them, but since everyone else was rooting for the split, he hadn’t been in a position to interfere.
Last night’s rain had left deep puddles all over the streets.
Becky had taken a cab to the traditional medicine clinic that morning.
Xavier kept leading her forward.
Becky suddenly stopped in her tracks.
“What is it?” Xavier turned to look at her.
Becky stared at him, exasperated. “What’s wrong with you? Why make things harder than they need to be?”

“What’s the big deal about taking the car? What are you trying to say? You don’t want me riding in your car?”
“That’s not it…”
He just wanted to spend more time with her.
Forget it. He didn’t explain.
Xavier waved to Randall, who immediately pulled the car up in front of them.
He opened the door. “Get in.”
Becky climbed in without hesitation.
On a normal day, she wouldn’t take advantage of Xavier like this–but tonight was different.
The road was full of puddles; it was dark, and one wrong step could soak her shoes.
Once Xavier was in, Randall started driving.
Becky greeted him, and Randall smiled and chatted with her for a bit.
The drive was quick–one hit of the gas and they were there. Becky felt like she hadn’t even warmed the seat before she had to get out.
Xavier followed her upstairs under the pretense of checking on his son.
Becky couldn’t really object.
While waiting for the elevator, she warned him, “You keep coming over like this, if my parents find out, they’re going to give me hell.”
Xavier turned to her. “They won’t. If they do come looking for you, tell me right away.”
“Please. They’re your parents. What’s the point of telling you? What are you going to do–stand up to them on my behalf?”
“If it’s you… I would.”
“What would you do?”
“Stand up to them.”
“Huh?”
Becky blinked, stunned, and tilted her head to look at him.
Xavier was a full head taller than her, so she had to look up.
His handsome face was completely serious.
Becky knew that before they got married, Xavier had treated the original her incredibly well–like a beloved little sister. He’d even spoiled her more than Yvonne, which was why Yvonne hated her so much.
