A cold, low male voice came through the receiver. “Sorry, but I think this needs to be made clear, for everyone’s sake.”
Yulia shouted, “It’s not for everyone’s sake! I want to marry you! Do you understand? I want to marry you!”
“Yulia, don’t do this.”
“Xavier, why are you treating me like this? Is it really that hard to marry me?”
There was a pause on the other end; then he spoke again, still patient but firm. “There’s no future for us.”
“Why? Did you fall for someone else?”
“Yes.”
Yulia could almost hear the string inside her snap. On the other end, Xavier had already hung up.
She stared blankly at her phone, too afraid to ask who the other woman was.
Was it Becky? No way. Xavier couldn’t possibly like Becky.
Yulia broke down, sobbing.
That cold, refined persona–she’s not like that at all, okay? It was all an act, something she put on for outsiders.
Meanwhile, Grace was in the middle of a board game with a group of wealthy ladies, basking in her glory.
Everyone envied her daughter for landing Dracovia’s most eligible bachelor–Xavier. He had everything, ability, family background, wealth, looks; a complete package.
In all of Dracovia, there probably weren’t many families that didn’t want to marry their daughters off to Xavier.
And yet it was the Moore family that struck gold. Everyone congratulated them with smiles, though secretly, they were eating their hearts out.
Grace, of course, loved to brag. After just a few rounds of the game, her mouth hadn’t stopped running.
Everyone was sick of it, but no one could say anything.
After all, she was about to become Xavier’s mother–in–law.
Just as Grace was feeling smug, one of the ladies gasped and walked over, phone in hand, giving Grace a pointed look.
Grace blinked in confusion. “What?”
“See for yourself.”
The woman showed her Xavier’s public statement.
Grace’s face changed instantly. She immediately denied it. “It’s fake!”
The other women had seen the statement too.

One of them spoke up. “It’s real. Glory Corp posted it, with Xavier’s official scal.”
Grace refused to believe it. “It must be a rumor!”
She shoved her game pieces aside. “I’m done. Not in the mood.”

She grabbed her purse and stormed off. The ladies behind her were already gossiping, their laughter echoing through the room.
Grace quickened her pace like something was chasing her..
Back home, she burst into Yulia’s room, yanked her out of bed, and started yelling at her.
“You useless girl! You were one step away from marrying into the Bolton family, and this is what happens? You’ve humiliated me out there!”
Yulia cried, “How is this something I can control? All you ever do is yell at me. I’m the one who’s hurt here!”
“Who else am I supposed to yell at? You blew it! You had the perfect hand and still messed it up. How am I supposed to show my face in public after this?”
“Mom, all you care about is your reputation. Have you even thought about how I feel?”
“You deserve it! Useless thing!”
Yulia was devastated. Jake stormed in next, grabbed her by the shoulders, and shook her so hard her head
spun..
“Yulia, this is all your fault! I got laughed at in school today! How can I have a sister like you? You’ve totally embarrassed me. Why don’t you just go die!”
Becky had just stepped out of the traditional medicine clinic when she saw Xavier leaning against a lamppost, cigarette in hand.
The light flickered on and off; she couldn’t see his face clearly.
She walked over. “Congratulations! I heard you’re engaged to Ms. Yulia–what wonderful news.”
Xavier took a drag, his dark eyes fixed on her.
Becky choked a little from the smoke and waved her hand in front of her face.
“I didn’t know you smoked. I thought you didn’t. But smoking’s bad for your health–you should cut back.”
Xavier stubbed out the cigarette and tossed it into a nearby trash can.
“Concerned about me?”
The air felt much cleaner to Becky now.
“Of course. You’re James‘ father.”
She wanted James to feel loved, especially by Xavier.
So, yes, she hoped Xavier would stay healthy.

Xavier straightened up, towering over her and blocking the streetlight.
“That’s the only reason?”
Becky nodded. “Yeah. By the way, have you two set a date yet?”
“What, planning to attend?”

Becky waved it off. “Nah, just curious. With my status, showing up would only make things awkward.”
Xavier asked, “You haven’t seen the news?”
“Nope,” Becky said. “Sharon told me about it–said your engagement was officially announced.”
Xavier figured as much. This woman didn’t care at all; she hadn’t even seen the statement he released.
“My engagement makes you happy, doesn’t it?”
Becky felt like he was asking way too many questions.
Still, she answered, “We may be divorced, but you’re still James‘ dad. Of course I want good things for you. If you’ve found happiness, I genuinely wish you well.”
Xavier kicked the lamppost hard. To hell with happiness.
He wasn’t happy at all, he was furious, with nowhere to let it out. Becky flinched at the sudden movement.
“What was that for?”
Xavier muttered, “Didn’t like the look of it.”
