Chapter 71 Back to “Wife”
Xavier took a step back, his face darker than the bottom of a scorched pot.
Becky couldn’t help herself–she burst out laughing.
It was just too funny.
Xavier probably never experienced anything like this in his life.
What was that step back supposed to mean? Was he scared?
Xavier shot her a look, then reached out and pulled Becky into his arms.
“Let’s go, honey.”
“Honey?” the lady blurted.
“Didn’t y’all get divorced? Why’s he still calling her that?”
Becky struggled, but his large hand clamped her in place. She couldn’t budge.
So Xavier was using her as a human shield now?
“We’re getting remarried soon,” Xavier said flatly.
With that, he led Becky out of the complex.
The lady and her daughter looked on with disappointed faces.
Once they were outside, Becky said, “Can you let go of me now?”
Xavier released her.
Becky grinned, not bothering to hide it. “So, how’s Victoria?”
Xavier grabbed her collar and yanked her closer. “Becky, you got a death wish or something?”
Becky winced. “Okay, okay! I won’t say another word. Let me go.”
Xavier let go.
Becky muttered under her breath, “Sheesh, can’t take a joke.”
“That kind of joke’s not funny at all. And what’s with this dump you’re living in? My ex–wife’s still hanging around, and that crazy old lady’s trying to push her daughter on me. Is everyone here out of their minds?”
Becky nodded. “Yeah. Definitely nuts.”
That lady really was something else. Becky found her annoying too.
Seeing Becky on his side finally cooled Xavier down.
The two of them wandered around for a bit. Becky, feeling snacky, bought some fried potatoes and fried tofu from a street stall.

Then she saw skewered lamb and got five.
And finally, she brought home a bag of popcorn,
“You didn’t eat enough at dinner?” Xavier asked.
“I did.” Becky replied.
“Then why’re you eating all this?”
“Eating a lot doesn’t mean I’m still hungry.”
“Pig”
“You sleep with a pig.”
As soon as she said it, Becky bit her lip in embarrassment.
Why the hell did she blurt that out?
So awkward.
She didn’t even dare look at Xavier, just kept her head down and walked ahead.
Xavier was stunned too.
That night… they’d both tacitly agreed never to speak of it again.
For her to suddenly bring it up–it was definitely awkward.
The rest of the way home, neither of them said a word,

Once they got back, Xavier figured if he was staying, he ought to do something, so he offered to bathe James.
Becky refused–she was afraid he’d toss James into the tub like last time.
Xavier didn’t push it. He crossed his arms and stood aside.
Becky bathed James, dressed him, then pointed to the dirty baby clothes in the basin.
“Wash those.”
Xavier frowned.
She wanted him to wash James’s clothes?
What about his dignity?
“Don’t want to? Then leave,” Becky/snapped.
Seriously–if he stayed and did nothing, how could he call that taking care of his son?
“I’ll do it.”
Xavier rolled up his sleeves, revealing solid, muscular forearms–he looked like he had serious strength.

No wonder he always tossed her around like a ragdoll.
Becky glanced at him, then carried James out of the bathroom.
She laid him in the crib and rolled it back to the bedroom.

When she returned, Xavier was seriously washing the baby clothes, looking like he actually knew what he was doing.
She was very satisfied.
Xavier thought to himself: When James grows up, I’m definitely telling him about this.
No one else is getting this kind of VIP treatment.
James really hit the jackpot.
There was only one bathroom, so Becky waited for Xavier to finish before she went in to shower.
After the awkward moment last time, she made sure to put on a bra after she got out.
When she stepped out, Xavier was standing on the balcony making a call. His tall frame blocked half the window.
Becky rolled her eyes, ducked into the bathroom to do her skincare, blow–dry her hair, and tidy up the place.
Ever since giving birth to James, her hair had been falling out like crazy. She sometimes worried she’d go bald.
When she turned around, Xavier was leaning against the doorway with his arms crossed.
Becky walked over. “Move.”
Xavier was silent for a moment before stepping aside.
Becky brushed past him.
That fresh scent hit him full–on, and Xavier’s mind went blank. He reached out instinctively-
But stopped halfway.
Becky had already gone into the bedroom and shut the door.
Xavier slowly lowered his hand.
Inside, Becky glanced at James. He was sleeping soundly.
She smiled, lay down on the bed, scrolled on her phone for a bit, then dozed off with it in her hand.
The next morning, she woke up to find breakfast laid out on the table–egg sandwiches and milk.
Xavier was dressed to the nines,/standing at the door like a model.
“Wash up and eat. I can’t stay for breakfast–I’ve got to head to the office.”

There was no denying it–Xavier had been blessed with a handsome face. Add a perfectly tailored suit and he could make any girl’s heart flutter.
Becky had to admit, waking up to this kind of eye candy in the morning really did lift the mood.
As long as she ignored their twisted fate.
Xavier noticed her staring blankly. Just as he was about to change shoes, he paused, walked over, cupped her face, and kissed her on the forehead.
Warm. Gentle.
