Chapter 4

I didn’t know how much time had passed before the sound of a heated argument between Vincenzo and Renato pulled me out of

unconsciousness.

I realized I was once again lying on the cold, sterile bed of a hospital room.

When Vincenzo saw I was awake, he let out a breath, though his face remained sullen.

He shot an annoyed glance at Renato.

“This is the perfect wife you picked for me? Out all night, meeting some pretty-boy doctor?”

Renato trembled with rage.

“Meeting? Do you even know where Isabella went yesterday?”

I cut in before the shouting escalated further.

“Father-it’s over now.”

Renato looked at me, reading the exhaustion and resolve in my eyes. Slowly, he suppressed his anger.

Vincenzo, on the other hand, scoffed and waved his hand dismissively.

“She’s awake now. That means I’m done here. Sienna’s waiting, and I’m leaving.”

“Stop right there!” Renato roared.

“I don’t care where you run off to today, but tomorrow, you’re coming back to my estate-with Isabella!”

But before he could finish, Vincenzo had already disappeared through the door.

Renato let out a long sigh and handed me a divorce agreement.

“This is the paperwork for your divorce from Vincenzo. I’ve arranged everything. Sign it, and your marriage will be officially

over.

“Tomorrow is the funeral for your son. I hope you’ll attend-to send him off, one last time.”

Looking at the silver-haired man before me, I couldn’t bring myself to refuse.

The next morning, dressed in black, I arrived at the Moretti estate.

From the moment my baby was born, I had been the one caring for him, but fate had no mercy. A child barely a month old was ripped away forever.

I wiped a tear from the corner of my eye. My heart felt hollow, and every last tie I had to this world had been severed at the root.

Until the burial ended, Vincenzo never appeared.

Hours later, the top trending post exploded across the internet.

It was a photo of Vincenzo and Sienna. She was trying on wedding dresses at a high-end bridal boutique.

Sienna sent a message, brimming with pride:

[So what if you had his child? Vincenzo chose me in the end.

[Oh-and did you really think he was by your side while you were unconscious?

[He was with me the whole time. We were in the VIP suite next door, trying out all sorts of new positions. The bed was surprisingly soft.]

I didn’t reply.

Instead, I forwarded every message and photo to Renato.

Then I picked up a small leather box.

Inside was the footprint card the hospital had given me the day my baby was born- a tiny photo of his delicate foot.

“My sweet baby… Mama will always love you,” I whispered.

I removed the diamond ring from my finger and bid one final farewell to Renato.

Night fell.

Vincenzo returned to the Moretti estate, reeking of alcohol.

The atmosphere in the living room was heavy.

The fireplace sat cold and dark.

Only one chandelier bulb glowed dimly above.

At the center of the long table lay a piece of black velvet.

Candles flickered in solemn silence.

A single vase of white roses stood quietly at the head.

Vincenzo froze-his eyes widened, and he instinctively stepped back.

“Who… died? Was it Isabella’s mother?”

Panic surged through him as he looked around for the house staff, trying to get answers.

“What happened? Where’s Isabella? How’s her mother? She must be devastated-I need to go to her!”

Renato appeared from the shadows and threw the divorce papers at Vincenzo.

“Isabella is gone. Her mother is dead. And today… is the seventh day since your son passed.”
