Chapter 5
Renato finally erupted.
“Your mistress ran Isabella over with her car! Because of the delay in treatment, the child died in her arms!
“Isabella’s mother fainted on the spot when she heard the news. A few hours later, she was gone too!
“Vincenzo! That was your son! Your flesh and blood! Do you even have a shred of humanity left?”
Vincenzo froze.
Then, he burst into manic laughter.
“Father, you were born for the stage. What did Isabella cry to you about this time? To make me come crawling back, now you’re staging a whole funeral drama? Creative.
“You think a mourning table and a few candles will make me feel guilty? Remorseful? Apologetic?”
He grabbed the divorce papers and tore them to pieces.
“Who said I agreed to a divorce?
“She’d never dare to leave me. Don’t kid yourself. She’d never give up the power and fortune that comes with the Moretti name in Stonehaven.”
With one swift kick, he flipped the black velvet-covered table.
Candles and photographs flew to the floor as the flames flickered and died.
“Where’s my son then? Huh? If he’s dead, where’s the body?”
He looked around frantically, his voice rising in panic.
“My son died, and Isabella didn’t tell me? That’s insane!”
“Remember the day I begged you to come home? It was so you could attend your son’s funeral! Yet you never showed up!”
Renato shouted.
Vincenzo trembled as panic overtook him.
He stormed through the estate like a madman, searching for any trace of the child.
The housemaids all stood in silence, heads bowed.
“Where are you hiding my son? Is Isabella here? Bring her to me! I’ll apologize! Is that what you want?
“Father, I know I went too far last time. But I won’t divorce her-”
He snatched up his phone, only to discover that I had already blocked him.
He stood frozen, as reality crashed onto him.
Renato had long grown weary of Vincenzo’s shamelessness and delusion.
“You think she’d come back to you? You think you deserve her? You couldn’t win her back with your life, let alone your words.”
Vincenzo inhaled sharply, deaf to reason.
“This is all to force me to break up with Sienna, isn’t it?”
He frantically dialed her number.

“That gown you liked last week? Well, I bought it. You’re not young anymore, so find a nice guy and settle down. Don’t show up in front of me again. We’re done.”
He hung up and blocked her, just as quickly.
Then he turned to Renato, arms spread wide.
“Happy now? I ended it. So when are Isabella and the baby coming home?”
Renato’s expression changed instantly. His chest heaved, and the hand clutching his cane trembled violently.
Then his body crumpled to the floor. The housemaids screamed and rushed forward.
But Vincenzo stood motionless and pale-faced, as fear slowly surfaced in his eyes.
For the first time, he might have realized that this time, no one would be waiting for him to come home.
