Chapter 9

It might be difficult for some people to believe, but Edgar, who consistently targeted Savannah and did not even treat her as a person, was, in fact, a brilliant neurologist who had risen to the position of hospital director at a young age.
Ten years ago, following the car accident involving Walter and Paul, Walter, who had fallen into a vegetative state, was admitted to this hospital at Edgar’s mandatory request.
At first, Savannah was worried Edgar would murder Walter and wanted to refuse.
Nevertheless, Edgar’s methods were something she could never contend with. Furthermore, Walter’s health did not present any major issues afterward, forcing Savannah to abandon her notion of covertly transferring him to another hospital. Instead, she had to exercise caution during each visit to Walter and make every effort to avoid running into Edgar.
However, despite her extreme caution, Savannah still managed to encounter Edgar.
Savannah cautiously lowered her head, her face growing paler. “M–Mr. Yates, stop joking around…”
“Joking? I don’t waste my time joking with indecent people,” Edgar replied with a half–truthful smile. “Ms. Turner, I’m used to saying what’s on my mind. What, are you going to cry?”
Savannah fell silent.
Savannah did not want to
answer.
Clenching her fists, she could only hope that the humiliation would pass swiftly.
Richard didn’t fully comprehend the situation, but upon hearing Edgar’s straightforward words, he decided. to intervene. “Dr. Yates, Ms. Turner is a family member of one of my patients, and she’s preparing to leave now… I happen to have a case I’d like to discuss with you. Shall we do so in the office?”
“Oh, is that the case?” Edgar raised an eyebrow and glanced at Richard, but the next moment, he offered a cynical smile. “Very well, let’s discuss it together. But in that case, you won’t be able to walk this patient’s family out. Are you fine with that?”
“Dr. Yates…” Richard was helpless, and his ears turned red.
Then, he turned his attention to Savannah and cleared his throat softly. “Ms. Turner, I won’t be able to walk you out, but when I returned a moment ago, I noticed that the weather outside the window didn’t appear very pleasant. There might be rain. Did you happen to bring an umbrella?”
“Yes.”
Savannah hastily nodded.
Aware that Richard was helping her, she forced a smile and looked at him with gratitude. In a low voice, she said, “Dr. Ross, thank you.”
As the young woman with beautiful eyes expressed her gratitude, her gaze resembled a clear spring, gently

touching the hearts of those around her.
Richard was momentarily taken aback. His heart seemed to skip a beat, and he yearned to reach out to grab Savannah’s wrist and walk her downstairs.
Nonetheless, the next moment, Savannah hurriedly made her way to the nearest safe passage. She didn’t even wait for the elevator as if she were concerned about being ensnared by monsters if she lingered any longer.
So, Richard sheepishly rubbed his nose and withdrew his hand before turning his attention to Edgar, who was standing behind him.
However, Edgar’s expression had turned extremely fierce at this point.
Richard was stunned. “Dr. Yates, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing.” Edgar muttered, suppressing the evil chill in his heart.
The next moment, when he picked up his phone and saw the notification indicating [video duration 01:53], a satisfied smile crossed his face.
On the other hand, when Savannah departed, she wasn’t paying much attention to what Richard had said. Nevertheless, once she stepped outside the hospital, she was indeed met with a heavy downpour.
The heavy raindrops poured down upon her head, making it challenging for her to walk in the downpour. Savannah hesitated to step out from under the shelter.
After all, being pregnant made her vulnerable, and she was more susceptible to illness in the rain. Moreover, if she happened to slip and fall while running in the downpour, the consequences could be even more severe.
Therefore, Savannah looked around in the rain and searched everywhere for a taxi.
Just then, her phone suddenly rang.
It was a phone call from Channing.
Savannah’s heart tightened. She quickly answered the phone and put it beside her ear. “Hello, Mr. Muir.”“
“Why do I hear rain on your end?” Channing said coldly, ‘Are you outside?”
“This man’s intuition is so sharp it’s terrifying,” she thought.
Savannah had been wrestling with how to broach her situation with Channing. Now, she didn’t need to fret about that any longer. “Yes, I’m outside. I’ll head home right away.”
“Where are you? I’ll ask someone to pick you up,” Channing said.
“U–Um, you don’t have to.” Savannah was aware that the Muir family had always regarded Walter as a murderer, and they disapproved of her visiting him.
Hence, she did not want to tell Channing where she was, but she did not want to lie either.

Savannah deliberately moved the phone further from her, altering the volume of her voice as she continued, “M–Mr. Muir, I think the signal is weak here… Ah, I can’t hear you clearly. I’ll be hanging up first!”
After uttering those words, Savannah hastily disconnected the call without waiting for Channing’s response. She couldn’t help but smile in relief, feeling as if she had narrowly averted a disaster.
At that moment, a black car suddenly pulled up beside her.
The tires churned up the muddy water on the ground, splashing it onto her.
Savannah was startled, When she saw the car’s make and model clearly, she had a sinking feeling.
She recognized this car. As expected, the window slowly lowered the next moment, revealing Channing’s cold and somber face before her.
“Bad signal? Can’t hear me?”
Savannah couldn’t find it in herself to raise her head and meet his gaze.
Her shoes were damp with dirty water, and she could feel a chill creeping up her legs.
Moving her lips, she wanted to explain.
However, Channing had already rolled the window back up and said, ‘Get in the car.
Savannah lowered her head and could only get in the passenger seat.
Before she could even settle into her seat, Channing’s large palm had already gripped the nape of her neck. drawing her closer to him. “Edgar used to say that you can’t seem to stay still and behave, and now it appears he was right. Savannah, is it really so hard for you to stay home? Must you be out and about to attract unnecessary attention to be happy?”
“I–I didn’t…” Savannah bit her lip in pain.
Channing and Edgar had been friends since childhood.
Apparently, Channing’s sudden appearance outside the hospital had something to do with Edgar, who just couldn’t stand Savannah. Savannah knew Edgar must’ve told Channing about it, deliberately adding fuel to
the fire.
Nevertheless, Savannah didn’t want Channing to misinterpret her intentions. “I came to the hospital today to visit my father. The reason I pretended the signal was bad and hung up earlier was because I knew you didn’t want me to constantly visit my father. I was afraid you would scold me… But I never attract unwanted attention…
“I don’t want to know why you’re here.”
Despite Savannah’s honesty, she did not earn Channing’s forgiveness. He interrupted her directly and stated, “Since you know I dislike you visiting the hospital so frequently to see your father, you should be obedient. Moreover, Savannah. I hope you haven’t forgotten that despite our contract marriage. I have germophobia and an aversion to uncleanliness. So, you’d better avoid getting too close to any untidy men before I decide to

Sneering, Channing lowered his gaze to look at Savannah. “Savannah, you don’t want to see your father die on his sickbed because of you, right?”
