Chapter 9

I smiled faintly through the glass. “Sister, you’re the matchmaker between Rowan and me. If not for you, we wouldn’t be together. I guess I should thank you-after all, I’m marrying into a wealthy family because of you.”

Her face twisted, her eyes wild. “Why? Why do you get everything so easily, while I lose everything?”

“Maybe,” I said softly, “this is fate. Oh, and one more thing-our parents have been very ill. They probably don’t have much time left. Caleb is still a child, so I’ve decided to send him to an orphanage where someone can actually look after him.”

“No!” she screamed, slamming her fists against the glass. “You can’t send my son to an orphanage!”

“That’s not your decision to make.”

She banged the glass harder and harder until the guards rushed in. One shocked her with an electric baton. She collapsed to her knees, trembling, still cursing me as they dragged her away. A few days later, I got the call. My sister was dead.

She had taken her own life, repeatedly smashing her head against the wall.

The guards said she kept muttering about wanting to start over-hoping for another chance, another life.

I couldn’t help but laugh. How pathetic.

Later, I went to the hospital to see my ailing parents.

The moment my mother saw me, she hurled the cup in her hand. “You ungrateful wretch! How dare you show your face here!”

I stepped aside calmly. “I came to tell you that your precious Maris is dead. She killed herself.” My mother froze, then broke into sobs so loud the room shook. “It’s your fault! You cursed this family! If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be in this state!”

On the bed, my father struggled to speak through the oxygen mask. Before he could form a word, the monitor began to shriek. His heart rate plummeted.

Within minutes, he was gone.

My mother screamed his name until her voice was hoarse, cradling his body as if I wasn’t even

there.

I didn’t stay to comfort her.

I took Caleb and personally sent him to an orphanage in another city, far away from the mess our family had become.

As for my mother… I didn’t care whether she lived or died.

Months later, Rowan and I had a lavish wedding on a sun-drenched beach in the Maldives.

I didn’t invite a single relative from my mother’s family. Only my childhood friends and a few trusted colleagues came to witness it.

From that day forward, I lived the life of a wealthy wife.

The pain and humiliation of my past life felt like a distant nightmare that no longer had claws in

This time, my future would be entirely my own-bright, free, and untouched by the poison of the

past.
