Chapter 34
She sat on the floor of the bedroom and replayed his words over and over in her mind. She considered how many wicked dreams had she had of him and how flustered it made her to know he’d had the same thoughts.
“You’re a grown woman, Famke. You have denied yourself far too long. Five years too long.” She hissed to herself. The last time she’d had sex was with the guy she’d been dating off and on from the diner she worked at. He had been a trucker she had been seeing immediately before Bram’s surgery. When she had cried in his hotel room, he had told her he didn’t have it in him to deal with all the emotions she was bringing. He only wanted the good time. She had walked out and not looked back. A few months later she’d met Prince and Mindy and since then, she had not prioritized sex. She went dancing with her friends or to the movies with Mr. Lighter from 3B, but romantic entanglements hadn’t been anything for which she was
ready.
Now however, there was a very real, hot-blooded man, down the hall who very clearly wanted to sleep with her. And she had closed the door on his face. She wondered what her best friend Nyx would say if she were here. Nyx was the only close friend she still had from childhood. Everyone else had bailed either when her parents died, and she got lost in her grief or when her brother was diagnosed, and her aunt refused to help, and she had to battle the court system. Nobody wanted to stick around for the calamity, except Nyx who had done more for her than most people ever dreamed.
She had been out of state the year of Bram’s surgeries and during her surrogacy, attending an Ivy league school on a full ride. Now she was a forensic accountant working for a company who saw through the goth clothes, dark make-up and tons of piercings and accepted her for the incredible asset she was. The fact the CEO of said company for the last year had been ruthlessly trying to take her to his bed was Nyx’s only complaint. He was a billionaire, gorgeous, smug, and arrogant with a brain to rival hers but according to Nyx, he wore white briefs. She had seen them in his overnight bag on his hotel sofa when they’d had to travel for work, and she had immediately discounted him as anyone she wanted to sleep with.
If Nyx were here, she’d probably tell her to march her ass down the hall and climb into the man’s bed and insist multiple orgasms were in order. She groaned and banged the back of her head against the door three times before she heard the sound of Precious’s bedroom door click closed. He’d already checked on her.
She crawled to her phone and sat with her back against the bed. She called Nyx.
“Do you know what time it is?” Nyx answered laughing. “If you’re not working tonight, then you should be in bed because you have to work at the butt crack of dawn.”
“You’re still up.”
“Yes, because my boss dumped a bunch of work on me this weekend saying he needed it done for Monday. I had a date tonight, Fammy and he ruined it by heaping work on me. He knows I’m financially motivated and offered me a five grand bonus if I got it in before eight am. Bastard.”
“He did it to ruin your date,” Famke laughed at the obvious. “He knew you had a date.”
“How? I didn’t tell anyone at the office.”
“Come on. He’s been trying to get you for a year, and you think he doesn’t know your schedule? He’s got more money than God. He probably has all of your devices hacked.”
“Well shit,” Nyx complained loudly, “I never even thought of such a possibility.” The sound of her slapping papers everywhere made Famke laugh until Nyx asked, “well, why are you up then?”
“So, uh, I’m in New York.”
“New York? Where the kid is?”
“At the kid’s house,” she whispered, “with Bram and um, also with Royal.”
“The sexy brother you’ve been dreaming of boning for weeks?”
“Nyx.” She started to protest her words and then shrugged resignedly. “Yeah. With him too. The thing is, they want me to stay here and help raise her.”
“Nope. No way. They want a nanny. If you had given her up for adoption, they wouldn’t come to you now.”
“But I didn’t give her up. Royal has a theory; he thinks the reason Prince never made me sign adoption papers was because he was hoping I would try to exercise my maternal rights.”
