Chapter 15

Three days later.

The doctor made his rounds again. After checking Mary’s vital signs, he frowned at Ralph:

“Mr. Walker, Mrs. Walker’s coma… isn’t physiological anymore.

Perhaps… you could try more extreme measures.”

“What measures?”

“Stimulation.”

The doctor explained, “Intense emotional triggers might revive her consciousness.”

Late at night.

The hospital room door burst open.

Ralph strode in, followed by bodyguards dragging a terrified woman-Karen.

“Kneel.”

Ralph commanded coldly.

Karen’s legs buckled, collapsing before Mary’s bed.

“Mr. Walker… I was wrong!

I truly know I was wrong!”

She sobbed pitifully, her former arrogance vanished.

Ralph didn’t glance at her, bending instead to whisper in Mary’s ear: “Mary, look. I brought her.

How should we deal with her?

Hmm?”

His voice held eerie tenderness as his fingers traced Mary’s cheek.

“Shall we cut off her hands?

Just open your eyes. I’ll do it for you.”

Karen trembled violently, kowtowing frantically: “Mary!

No-Mrs. Walker, forgive me!

I shouldn’t have scalded you!

Please spare me!”

Blood stained her forehead, yet Mary remained still.

Ralph’s gaze hardened.

He straightened, looking down at Karen with icy detachment: “Seems… she won’t dirty her hands.”

Karen jerked her head up, terror-stricken: “Mr. Walker-”

Ralph’s lips twisted without warmth.

Silent, he nodded. Bodyguards dragged Karen out like a dead dog.

Returning to Mary’s bedside, Ralph clasped her hand, murmuring:

“Mary, see? I’ve cleaned up everyone who hurt you.

Still… won’t you wake?”

Mary lay motionless, indifferent.

Ralph’s fingers trembled. Finally, he pressed his forehead to her hand, voice cracking:

“Mary… what must I do…

Are you really trying to drive me mad?”

Moonlight sifted through the curtains, illuminating Mary’s pallid face.

Her eyelashes fluttered-almost imperceptibly.

Whether unwilling to witness his descent or resolved to end this, her eyes opened.

“Ralph…”

At that whisper, Ralph’s breath caught.

He lunged for the call button, shouting hoarsely: “Doctor!

Doctor!

She moved!

She’s awake!”

Medical staff flooded the room. Pushed aside, Ralph never wavered his stare from Mary, terrified blinking might erase this reality.

After examination, the doctor turned to Ralph: “Mr. Walker, Mrs. Walker’s vitals are stable. She should discharge in days.”

Ralph’s Adam’s apple bobbed.

When the doctor left, he looked again at Mary on the hospital bed.

Mary’s tearless eyes saw him, her heart surprisingly calm.

He’d lost weight, a shadow of stubble darkening his jaw.

Ralph stepped forward, cautiously touching her face, his hand trembling.

His eyes were bloodshot. “Mary, you’re finally awake… Are you hungry?

Thirsty?

I’ll get you water!”

As Ralph stood, Mary spoke softly, yet her words pierced his heart like a blade: “I heard everything you said earlier.

Have you signed the divorce papers?

Let’s finalize this quickly.”

Ralph froze.

He turned slowly, agony and disbelief swirling in his gaze.

Mary met his eyes calmly: “I know what you’ve done. I lived for you ten years, but from now on I’ll live for myself.”

Ralph’s breathing grew ragged.

He dropped to his knees beside the hospital bed, clutching her hand as he choked out: “Mary, love me one more time… Just once. I won’t fail you this time-”

She withdrew her hand, staring out the window. “Ralph, if you don’t want me to die, let me

Set us both free.”

His shoulders shook violently.

“So you woke up just to divorce me…’

“Exactly. It’s the only thing I want. I refuse to remain your wife.” Her icy words slammed into his chest like stones.

That night, Ralph sat motionless by Mary’s bed, watching her in silence until dawn.

When she woke again, divorce papers lay beside her. Ralph approached with a basin, gently washing her face.

“Three villas, two apartments, the car-all yours,” he murmured, towel moving over her wrists. “Every penny transferred to your account.”

Mary’s pupils flickered in surprise.

Ralph gave a bitter smile. “Congratulations, Mary. You’re now one of Metropolis’ richest women. We’ll finalize the divorce once you recover.’

“Fine,” she whispered.

Three days later, outside the Civil Affairs Bureau.

Sunlight made Mary squint against the glare as she stood on the steps holding her divorce documents.

Ralph’s voice came from behind her: “Let me drive you.”

“No.”

As she descended, he blocked her path.

“Mary.”

His gaze burned with determination. “Let’s start over. Please?”

She froze.

“My name’s Ralph. Thirty-two. Single.” His gravelly voice held unfamiliar sincerity. “Have dinner with me tonight?”

Mary’s eyes stung.

She turned away. “Don’t do this, Ralph. We’re finished.”

He stood firm. “We’re both free now. I have every right to pursue you.

You can refuse-but I won’t give up.”

“You-”

“I know you hate me. I won’t force you.

Just give me a chance… to make up for ten years of missed dates. Missed moments.”

His gaze was too intense, Mary could hardly withstand it.

“As you wish.”

Finally, Mary tossed out these two words and hurried toward the roadside to hail a cab.

Ralph watched her retreating figure, the corner of his mouth lifting slightly.

Suddenly his phone rang-Walker Group’s assistant calling. “Mr. Walker, the international meeting wants to schedule next week…”

Ralph cut him off immediately: “Cancel next week’s international meeting. Postpone all non- essential business trips indefinitely.”

The assistant gasped: “Mr. Walker, this is a billion-dollar deal!”

Ralph’s eyes tracked Mary boarding the taxi in the distance. He scoffed, “What’s a mere billion?”

Nothing mattered more than reclaiming the woman before his eyes.
