Chapter 6
As they were about to leave, they ran into Seraphina.
She wore a light colored dress, running over with a smile: “Adrian! What a coincidence!”
“I’m at this waterfront party with some friends!” Her eyes sparkled as she looked at Adrian. “Remember last time you really hit it off with them? Come hang out!”
Violet stood to the side, watching Adrian–who usually hated socializing–actually nod: “Sure.”
Her heart filled with bitterness–because Seraphina was the one asking, he’d agreed.
At the private room, Seraphina’s friends started making a fuss the moment they saw Adrian:
“Yo! What divine being did our Seraphina drag here?”
“Isn’t this Yale’s youngest Professor Montgomery? Most people can’t get him to show up–Seraphina’s got serious pull!”
Seraphina blushed, pushing them playfully: “Stop it!”
Someone noticed Violet, looking her up and down: “Who’s this?”
Seraphina glanced at Violet casually: “She does nails near campus. Also a friend of Adrian’s.”
“A nail tech?” The group exchanged meaningful looks. “How does Professor Montgomery know someone like… that? Kinda lowbrow, dont you think…”
Adrian frowned, but Seraphina quickly changed the subject: “Alright, alright, let’s play games!”
Violet quietly found a corner to sit in, saying nothing.
Soon they were clamoring to play party games, and when they were short on players, Seraphina pulled Adrian in.
He actually didn’t refuse.
Adrian sucked at games and lost the first round.
“Punishment! Punishment!” everyone cheered. “Let’s see his phone!”
Adrian handed over his phone. They opened his messages and immediately started making suggestive noises.
Seraphina was his only pinned contact.
Their recent chat history showed daily conversations, with Adrian replying to everything, often instantly.
“Ooooh-” The group exchanged knowing looks and opened his photos.
Among thousands of lab data shots, there were only a few personal photos–all of Seraphina–her profile while reading, her smiling with coffee, her sleeping in the lab…
Violet sat in the corner, feeling like her heart was being sliced open with a dull knife, the pain making it hard to breathe.
Seraphina grabbed the phone back, blushing, while Adrian remained composed except for slightly red ears.
Round two–Seraphina lost and drew the drinking penalty.
“I’m on my period…” she said quietly. “Could we do something else?”

“No way!” Everyone booed. “If you can’t drink, let Professor Montgomery do it for you!”
Seraphina waved her hands frantically: “He doesn’t drink at all, and he has classes tomorrow…”
Before she could finish, Adrian had already picked up the glass and downed it in one gulp.
One glass after another, completely unfazed.
“Professor Montgomery’s the MAN!”
“For our Seraphina, he’s really going all out!”
Amid the cheering, Violet couldn’t take it anymore and fled to the bathroom.
The moment she closed the door, she could still hear the gossip outside:
“They’re so perfect together–if only that woman wasn’t in the way…”
“I heard Professor Montgomery only stays with her out of obligation, but he’s been into Seraphina for ages…”
Violet turned on the faucet, desperately splashing water on her burning eyes.
She stayed in the bathroom for a long time, until the noise outside gradually faded, then finally opened the door.
Seraphina was leaning against the hallway wall, as if waiting for her.
“When are you gonna keep your end of the deal?” she asked bluntly.
Violet was quiet for a moment, then said softly: “I’m taking the train tomorrow night.”
She paused, then smiled: “What a coincidence.”
“I’m planning to confess to Adrian tomorrow night.” She tilted her head, looking at Violet with the pity of a winner. “Have a safe trip.”
Just as Violet was about to respond, the door behind them suddenly opened.
Adrian stood there, face flushed, eyes unfocused–clearly drunk.
“What safe trip?” He frowned.
