Chapter 109: New Colleagues
(Elena Blackwood’s POV)
I was stunned for a moment and slowly came back to my senses. Was I already encountering such at frustrating thing on my first day at work?
I took a deep breath, trying to maintain my composure. “I understand you prefer privacy, but I was assigned this office by the administration.”
“Since I’m new here, I have nowhere else to go, I continued firmly. “Perhaps we could share the space professionally?”
The man studied me with calculating eyes. His gaze was intense, almost predatory in its assessment.
“What’s your name?” he asked abruptly.
“Elena Blackwood,” I replied, meeting his stare without flinching.
He pulled out his phone and made a quick call. “Fisher, come to my office. Now.”
Within minutes, a cheerful man appeared in the doorway. His warm smile was a stark contrast to my unwelcoming colleague’s cold demeanor.
“Elena!” Dr. Fisher exclaimed with feigned surprise. “What are you doing in Hugo’s office?”
“Dr. Porter assigned me here,” I explained. “But it seems there’s been a misunderstanding”
Dr. Fisher shot a disapproving look at the man called Hugo. “Hugo, you can’t monopolize an entire office. The
hospital needs space for new staff.”
“I don’t share,” Hugo replied curtly, spraying disinfectant on his desk.
Dr. Fisher turned to me with an apologetic smile. “Elena, would you like to share my office next d have
plenty of space.”
“That would be wonderful,” I said quickly, gathering my bag. Thank you for the offer.”
As we prepared to leave, Dr. Fisher shook his head at Hugo. “Your lack of chivalry toward she–wolves is truly
disappointing.”
Hugo ignored the comment, continuing to sanitize his workspace with methodical precision.
Dr. Fisher led me to the adjacent office, which was bright and welcoming. A woman with kind eyes looked up
from her desk.
“Elena, meet Dr. Irene Ryan, head of our neurovascular surgery department,” Dr. Fisher introduced us.
Dr. Ryan stood and extended her hand. “Welcome to Riverside Administrative Medical Center. I’ve heard
impressive things about your qualifications.”
“Thank you,” I replied, shaking her hand. “I’m excited to contribute to the team.”
Dr. Ryan glanced at my resume with obvious interest. “Your experience at the Northern Territory Central Healing Institute is remarkable for someone your age.”

1 was fortunate to have excellent mentors, I said modestly.
Dr. Fisher gestured toward the wall separating us from Hugo’s office. “Don’t mind our peculiar neighbor. Dr. Hugo Ashworth is brilliant but has severe germaphobia.”
“He can’t perform surgeries himself due to his condition,” Dr. Ryan added. “But his expertise in complex neurovascular cases is unparalleled.”
I was surprised by this revelation. “He’s that skilled despite not operating?”
“His theoretical knowledge and diagnostic abilities are extraordinary,” Dr. Ryan confirmed. “He consults on our most challenging cases.”
The talent within this administrative medical center was clearly exceptional. I felt both intimidated and excited by the caliber of my new colleagues.
It rained heavily in Riverside City overnight. The lightning outside the window suddenly struck like daylight, tearing through the sky, and the thunder woke me.
Nightmares had plagued my sleep–fragments of memories and fears that left me exhausted. I arrived at the hospital the next morning feeling drained.
Dr. Fisher noticed my condition immediately. “Elena, you look tired. Are you feeling alright?”
“Just the stress of starting a new position,” I replied, forcing a smile. “I’ll adjust soon.”
During our tour of the hospital, we encountered Dr. Hugo Ashworth and Dr. Jane Porter in the corridor. Dr. Porter’s eyes followed Hugo with obvious longing.
“Jane has feelings for Hugo,” Dr. Fisher whispered to me. “But he’s completely oblivious to romantic interest.”
My phone rang, interrupting our conversation. Professor Theodore Ashworth’s name appeared on the screen.
“Excuse me,” I said, stepping aside to answer.
As I spoke with my former mentor, I noticed Dr. Ashworth glance in my direction. The brief look unnoticed by Dr. Porter, whose expression darkened with jealousy.

At noon, I took advantage of the break to rush to the restaurant to have lunch with Professor Theodore
Ashworth.
I joined Professor Ashworth, Deputy Minister Harrison, and Joyce Harrison at their table. Joyce greeted me with genuine warmth.
“Elena, dear, you look lovely,” Joyce said kindly. “How are you settling into Riverside City?”
“Very well, thank you,” I replied. “Everyone has been welcoming.”
Dr. Hugo Ashworth arrived and sat opposite me. Professor Ashworth smiled proudly.
“Elena, meet my grandson, Hugo,” he said. “Hugo, this is Elena Blackwood, my most talented former student.”
The revelation stunned me. Hugo was Professor Ashworth’s grandson? I was so careless that I didn’t notice they had the same last name.
Joyce leaned forward with interest. “Elena, do you have a mate?”
“I was mated,” I replied carefully. “But I’m in the process of severing the bond.”
