I stood at Moonfall International Airport’s arrival gate, scanning the crowd for Rachel Thompson. When I spotted her emerging from the terminal with a single suitcase, relief washed over me.
“Rachel!” I called out, waving to catch her attention.
Her face lit up with gratitude as she approached. “Elena, I can’t thank you enough for this opportunity.”
“Don’t mention it,” I insisted, taking her suitcase despite her protests. “You’re helping me by coming here.”
As we walked toward the parking area, Rachel’s expression grew hesitant. “I feel like I’m imposing on your
hospitality.”
“Absolutely not,” I said firmly. “You can stay in my guest suite until you find your own place.”
Rachel looked surprised. “I assumed you and Alpha Marcus were living together since he’s also in Riverside
City.”
I shook my head quickly. “We don’t live together. We’re a mated pair about to sever our bond.”
Her eyebrows rose with curiosity. “Everyone at the Northern Territory Central Healing Institute knows about your mating registration.”
“It’s complicated,” I explained as we reached my car. “Marcus showed favoritism toward Sophia Rivers at the institute for years. That created… difficulties.”
Rachel nodded with understanding. “I witnessed some of that favoritism myself.”
The next day, I decided to visit Hugo Ashworth with a fruit basket, hoping to secure his help with Rachel’s
position. I knocked on his apartment door and waited.
When the door opened, I was startled by Hugo’s disheveled appearance. He wore only a white robe, his hair tousled from sleep.
“Elena?” he said, clearly surprised to see me. “What brings you here?”
I held up the fruit basket awkwardly. “I wanted to ask for your help with my friend’s nursing position.”

The cutting remark stung more than I expected. I realized I might have overestimated our relationship.
“I see,” I said quietly, lowering the fruit basket. “I’m sorry for bothering you.”
I turned to leave, feeling disappointed and embarrassed by his rejection.
Despite the setback with Hugo, I approached the department supervisor directly with Rachel’s resume. The middle–aged she–wolf reviewed the documents with growing interest.
“Computer programming skills?” she asked, looking impressed. “That’s extremely rare and valuable in healing
staff.”
“Rachel has extensive experience with medical databases,” I explained.
The supervisor nodded enthusiastically. “We desperately need someone with these qualifications. I’ll arrange an interview and examination for tomorrow.”
Relief flooded through me as I thanked her profusely.
Later, when I encountered Hugo in the medical center corridor, he stopped me with an apologetic expression.
“Elena, I owe you an apology,” he said quietly. “I spoke inappropriately earlier.”
Before I could respond, Dr. Edmond Fisher appeared with coffee cups, inadvertently breaking the tension
between us.
“Am I interrupting something?” he asked, looking between us curiously.
Hugo and I stepped apart, the moment effectively ended by the interruption.
