Chapter 48: The Mate Bond’s End
(Elena’s POV)
I followed Marcus back to Moonhaven Estate in silence. The familiar path felt different tonight, heavy with
unspoken finality.
I knew it was useless to say more about things he had already decided. Marcus’s decisions were final,
leaving me with no room to argue.
Upon reaching the estate, Marcus entered the security code and stepped inside. I followed closely behind
him.
The Shadow Gate Foyer lit up automatically, revealing Marcus removing his coat and watch with deliberate
movements. Each action seemed calculated, aggressive even.
The oppressive atmosphere made me feel threatened. I immediately declared my intention.
“I’ll sleep in the Shadow Wing Guest Suite tonight.”
I walked past him without waiting for a response. Marcus watched me go, remaining silent.
I entered the Shadow Wing Guest Suite and locked the door behind me. The click of the lock felt like a barrier
against losing control and being swayed by my emotions.
The next morning, I arrived at the Northern Territory Central Healing Institute early. Two different Elite Guards
stood stationed outside the Intensive Healing Ward, their imposing figures unmistakable.
Inside the room, Richard had already arrived, bringing breakfast for Patricia. She looked exhausted, dark
circles under her eyes.
“Elena, are those guards outside sent by Marcus?” Patricia asked quietly.
Richard confirmed with a nod. “It could be no one else.”
He reflected aloud, his voice bitter. “I initially admired Marcus’s family background and the potential benefits
it could bring to our family, especially for David.”
His expression darkened. “However, recent events have left me with mixed feelings.”
After Dr. Harrison Mitchell and his Medical Apprentice examined David, Dr. Mitchell shared the results with
me privately.
“Your brother has lost all awareness of the outside world,” he explained gently. “He’s in an unconsci
ate.”
My heart sank as he continued. “While his thalamus and brainstem functions are preserved, allowing him to breathe and maintain a heartbeat, he shows no signs of cognitive ability.”
Dr. Mitchell’s voice grew grave. “David is in a vegetative state. These injuries weren’t typical of ordinary
assaults – they point towards a deliberate attempt to kill.”
He paused, then added carefully. “The high costs of long–term care will be substantial, despite your employee
discount.”
I visited David in the Intensive Healing Ward afterward. I couldn’t bring myself to disclose the true situation to

After leaving the institute, I met with Legal Advocate Barnes to discuss finalizing my separation from
Marcus.
“I’ve prepared all the necessary mate bond severance documents,” I told him. “But this time, I’m adding a new clause – I’ll only request one million in compensation.”
Legal Advocate Barnes looked surprised. “Are you sure you don’t want to fight for more, considering Marcus’s
wealth?”
I smiled sadly. “One million and a house are enough for me. I’m not being noble, but rather trying to avoid a dispute over money.”
I explained further. “Marcus believes I mated with him for his wealth. I don’t want to fulfill that expectation.”
“Send the agreement to Marcus at the end of the month,” I instructed. “Without my direct involvement. There’s
nothing left to negotiate.”
After Legal Advocate Barnes left, I paid the bill at Crimson Moon Tavern. Nathan Sterling appeared, offering
to pay for my meal.
“I was here to meet a friend and was about to leave,” I mentioned.
Nathan smiled. “This tavern is part of my family’s business.”
I seized the opportunity. “Nathan, do you know anyone in the city’s Territorial Enforcement Station? My brother received unjust treatment there.”
Nathan’s expression grew concerned. “If someone used their influence, it could have significant repercussions if exposed. I promise to investigate the matter.”
Suddenly, Isabella Blackwood appeared, her face flushed with anger. “Elena! How dare you cheat on my
cousin!”
I retorted sharply. “Since you want me to leave Marcus so much, why are you angry about it?”
Isabella insisted stubbornly. “You’re still mated to Marcus! You shouldn’t be seeing other men!”
Nathan looked at me but remained silent.
I laughed, feeling the absurdity of the situation. “Aren’t you the one who wants me to leave your cousin the most? Why are you getting angry about me seeing other men?”
