Chapter 49: Confrontation at the Tavern
(Elena’s POV)
I suppressed my smile and looked at Isabella, “If anyone should apologize, it’s him who should apologize to
me first.”
Isabella Blackwood scoffed at my words, her perfectly manicured nails tapping against the polished table
surface.
“You’re so self–righteous,” she sneered. “Everyone knows you only wanted Marcus for his wealth and position.”
Her eyes narrowed as she looked me up and down with obvious disdain.
“Stop acting innocent. You pursued him willingly,” Isabella continued, her voice dripping with venom. “It’s not
his fault he doesn’t love you.”
I remained silent, watching her dig herself deeper.
“And now you’re involved with inappropriate men,” she gestured dismissively toward Nathan. “Who knows what diseases you might bring back to my cousin through your unfaithful behavior.”
Something snapped inside me. The accumulated frustration of years being the unwanted mate, the recent discovery about my adoption, and David’s condition–it all converged into a single moment of clarity.
Without hesitation, I slapped Isabella across the face.
The sound echoed through the tavern. Several patrons turned to stare at our table.
Isabella’s hand flew to her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with shock. “You… you dared to hit me?”
“I have no obligation to tolerate your behavior,” I replied coldly. “I don’t care about your antics within the Blackwood family, but you should be mindful of your words in public.”
I leaned closer, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “Even if I were to betray your cousin, so what? I’d
be returning the favor.”
Isabella’s face paled at my words. I grabbed Nathan’s wrist, ready to leave this unpleasant scene behind.
“Let’s go,” I said to Nathan, who looked both surprised and impressed by my outburst.
Before we could take two steps, the tavern door opened. Marcus entered with Sophia at his side
My heart skipped a beat. From their expressions, I could tell they had overheard our exchange.
I met Marcus’s golden eyes but remained silent. What was there left to say?
Isabella, seeing her opportunity, rushed to Marcus and Sophia. She clutched her cheek dramatically, tears
welling in her eyes.
“Marcus! Elena hit me!” she cried. “All because I caught her with this wild man!”
Sophia’s lips curved into a secret smirk, clearly pleased to witness the drama unfolding. Then, surprisingly, she stepped forward with a concerned expression.
“Isabella, I think you misunderstood,” Sophia said softly. “Young Master Sterling is from a respectable family.

As we passed Marcus, I deliberately ignored him completely. I could feel his anger radiating through our mate bond, but I didn’t care anymore.
Nathan and I parted ways in the Underground Parking Caverns. He offered to drive me home, but I declined politely.
“Thank you for your help today,” I said. “And for looking into David’s situation.”
Nathan nodded. “I’ll let you know what I find.”
As I was about to get into my car, a strong hand grabbed my waist. I was spun around with supernatural
force, coming face to face with Marcus.
“Elena, is it fun to provoke me?” His voice was dangerously low.
His grip tightened, sending sharp pain through my body. I winced, trying to pull away.
“I have no need to provoke you,” I retorted. “Let go of me!”
Marcus stared intently at me, his golden eyes burning with an emotion I couldn’t decipher.
“Let go! It hurts!” I exclaimed as tears welled up in my eyes. His Alpha strength was crushing my bones.
Something flickered in his expression–perhaps his wolf Logan recoiling at causing his mate pain. He
released me instantly.
I rubbed my wrist, frustration boiling over. “What do you want? You’ve been ignoring me for years, and now suddenly you’re paying attention?”
“I said, don’t get too close to Nathan Sterling,” Marcus stated flatly.
“I haven’t interfered with your relationship with Sophia, why do you have the right to interfere with me?” I
countered.
Marcus’s jaw tightened. “It’s different.”
I felt a surge of bitterness and laughed. “Yes, it’s indeed different. She’s your white moonlight, your first love,
no one can compare to her.“/
My voice rose with each word. “So you can be unscrupulous and get close to her, rekindle old flames, even have an affair, right?”
“I didn’t have an affair,” Marcus replied calmly.
I stared at him, finding his words laughable. “If this doesn’t count as an affair, then what does? Do you want me to catch you in bed?”

“Did you feel my betrayal through our mate bond?” Marcus asked quietly.
“No,” I admitted. “But you have plenty of methods to block the mate bond.”
Marcus’s expression turned icy, his Alpha aura flaring dangerously around us. “Don’t make assumptions about my relationship with her. I’ve said, keep her out of our matters.
“Then please don’t make assumptions about my relationship with Young Master Sterling, I retorted, mirroring his words. “Keep Young Master Sterling out of our matters.”
With that, I got into my car and drove away, leaving Marcus standing in the parking caverns.
(Isabella’s POV)
Sophia and I rushed out after Elena. Sophia stood behind Marcus, watching Elena’s car disappear. She bit her lip, clearly resentful.
“Marcus, I finally got out of the recovery ward,” Sophia said softly. “You promised to have dinner with me
today.”
I quickly chimed in, not wanting to miss an opportunity to support her. “Marcus, don’t ruin Sophia’s mood for
the sake of Elena.”
Just then, Marcus’s phone rang. He answered it briefly before turning to us.
“You two eat, it’s on me,” he said flatly.
His Elite Guards pulled up with his car. Without another glance at us, Marcus got in and drove away.
Watching his car leave, Sophia’s face turned pale. Her expression transformed with hatred.
“b***h!” she hissed under her breath.
“Ah? Sophia, what did you say?” I asked in surprise.
Sophia’s face immediately softened into a smile. “Didn’t say anything. Since Marcus is busy, let’s go eat
ourselves.”
I followed her, still wondering if I had heard correctly. In my mind, Sophia was always soft and elegant, like a goddess. How could she say dirty words like b***h?
But I was sure that I had heard that word spoke out from Sophia clearly.
