“Please cancel all my other meetings, Caroline, I need to go home.” Ethan instructed as he rose to his feet and picked up his suit jacket from his arm chair,
“Okay sir, but there’s one last meeting which you tagged as important. Should I cancel it as well?”
“What’s that?” Ethan questioned,
“You scheduled a meeting with Mr Anderson.”
Ethan arched his brows, “Schedule the meeting for tomorrow instead, Caroline, today’s a special day right now and I can’t miss it for anything.” Ethan responded and and when she nodded her head, he began to walk away, heading towards the elevator
As soon as Bryan got into the elevator, he tucked his hand into his pocket in order to get his phone from it and see who was calling,
It was Stella.
Ethan took a deep breath in, and turned off his phone. It was no surprise that he was trying to avoid hearing her voice. A lot had changed in the six years since Olivia left the country to a place he had no idea about.
First, his father’s heart condition had grown worse especially after hearing the news of his divorce with Olivia and Shirley’s pregnancy.
Ethan tucked his phone back into his pocket and exited the elevator once it opened. As he got to his car, he stepped into it, and ignited the engine ready to go home,
About an hour later, he halted the car and stepped out of it,
“Daddy!” The voice of a little girl was heard as she ran into his arms and almost immediately, he picked her up from the floor to his arms,
“Welcome Daddy, I missed you so much.” She uttered, and Ethan immediately planted a kiss on her forehead.
“Where were you all day, Ethan? We were supposed to have a family outing together and you promised to return home early.” Shirley questioned, but Ethan let out a deep breath. He despised the fact that she wanted them to start an argument in front of their daughter,
“Let’s go in. There’s still so much time to celebrate Eva’s birthday today, Shirley and I had a very important meeting at work today.”
Shirley let out a loud scoff,
“A meeting more important than your only child’s birthday?”
Without uttering another word, Ethan began to walk into the house, heading towards Eva’s room,
“Tell me, baby, where do you want to go? I’m so sorry Daddy returned home a little late for your birthday sweetheart. Next year wouldn’t be like this because Daddy would try to make it up to you.” Ethan responded as he gently dropped Eva on the bed and sat down next to her,
He held his daughter’s hand as a deep wave of guilt washed over his heart. Truth be told, he had been so busy with something important at the office that he may have forgotten about Eva’s birthday this year just like every other past year,
“I want you and Mommy to be happy instead, Daddy?” Eva uttered with a sad expression on her face as she stared at him. Her sea–blue eyes made the guilt in his heart only grow worse and when Ethan couldn’t take it anymore, he averted his gaze away from her,

“Mommy cries every day and she doesn’t want to talk to me every day, Daddy. I’m scared she doesn’t love me because you don’t love her.”
Ethan let out a sad chuckle. Why did Eva have to be so smart enough to even get a grasp of little things? It was almost like they couldn’t hide anything from her because she would surely figure them out within seconds.
It was him.
She did take after him and there was no denial of that,
“Baby, Daddy loves you so much, you understand that right?” Ethan questioned and Eva gently nodded her head,
“Do you love Mommy?”
Ethan didn’t respond to his daughter’s question. What was he supposed to say? There was no point in lying to his daughter because Eva had most of the time been there during their fights and exchange of words towards each other,
He hated it so much,
Hated the fact that Eva had to be involved in all of this,
“Daddy?”
Her call for him broke the last thread of his thoughts, and he let out a small smile at his daughter. There was no doubt he loved her so much, but not her mother. Ethan had tried for so many years, but it wasn’t just working. Olivia just couldn’t leave his mind,
Maybe Shirley was right, Eva was suffering in all of this, in his continuous selfish actions of not giving her a perfect family,
“I love…” Before Ethan could complete his statement, there was a loud noise of something shattering from the living room followed by a painful scream of Shirley,
Both Ethan and Eva rose to their feet almost immediately, but Ethan held her back. This was Shirley probably throwing one of her tantrums again because something didn’t go her way and he didn’t want his daughter to see that side of her mother,
“Baby, stay here, everything’s fine, I’ll take care of Mommy, okay.”
“But…” The look on Eva’s face indicated a worried one and that was the last thing Ethan wanted.
“You’ve got to trust Daddy, okay? After this, we would all go out for a nice family dinner baby. Anywhere you pick.” Ethan responded and let out a smile. He lowered his face, pecked her, and placed her back on the bed.
As Ethan stepped out of the room, he saw one of the maids along the passenger way and called her attention,
“Keep an eye on Eva, make sure she doesn’t step out of her room no matter what.” He instructed and began to head towards the living room. Almost half of the properties in the room were broken and Shirley was on the floor with a huge cut on her palm and traces of a broken flower vase around her,
“I just want to die” She muttered the very moment she could feel Ethan’s presence behind her, and picked out a big broken part of the vase,
“Hey, Shirley, look at me, okay, don’t you dare do what you have in mind. Ethan uttered and she immediately cocked her head to stare at him.
“We have a daughter and she’s fucking worried about you. What the hell am I going to tell Eva if you do this.”
Again with Eva. It was only about their daughter and not because he loved her. Shirley scoffed and let out a deep breath as

“What did I ever do to deserve all of this, Ethan? You loved me, didn’t you? You were willing to divorce Olivia seven years ago just to start a family with me, so what changed? After she walked away like you always wanted, you abandoned your love for me. Seven fucking years and we’re not married. The only thing we have together is a daughter and nothing more.” Shirley yelled as tears ran down her cheeks uncontrollably, “And I have to beg for scraps of your love every fucking day!”
“Shirley, take it easy, okay, let’s talk about this before you do anything stupid.”
“I had to get you drunk so you could even touch me, Ethan, how cruel is that? So you can give my body the attention it needs.” Shirley continued with her piled–up anger burning free from her chest,
“We have a daughter upstairs and she’s fucking worried about you.” Ethan almost half yelled, but when he took another step closer to her, she pointed the piece of broken ceramic glass close to her abdomen,
“Hey…. Hey, please…”
“So tell me, Ethan, why the hell are you still looking for that bitch even after seven years. Tell me! Why? Why the hell are you desperately looking for a woman you abandoned seven fucking years ago.” Shirley yelled, and it was at this moment, Ethan let out a deep breath. She had found out what he had been hiding all these years so there was no need to hide it
anymore,
“Because I love her, and I only realized how much I love Olivia after she walked away from me,” Ethan uttered, and as a tear rolled down Shirley’s eyes, she let out a disappointed scoff,
“Let’s see what you have to say to our daughter when she finds out you killed her mother and completely ruined her birthday because of your selfishness,” Shirley uttered and without a second thought, pierced the broken piece straight into her abdomen.
