Chapter 57
*Start chest compressions now, a 30: 2, bring the defibrillator ” Olivia ordered as she tried to revive the patient in ward VIP 260
“Administer another dosage of epinephrine through the 10 line.”
“Doctor, what dosage?“The resident doctor asked
“Give 1mg and then a saline flush. Nurse, what is the EKG?” Olivia belted out as she attached the electrodes to the man’s body
“No activity, doctor,” Olivia swore under her breath
“We have to revive him in the next minute or we are going to lose him. Set it at 120. Shock” She ordered,
The current waves passed through the man but sadly, the heart monitor and the EKG still showed no activity
“Increase it to 200.”
“Shock,” Still, there was nothing
“Charge it to 250,” Olivia ordered
“Shock“.
The flat line of the heart monitor showed no change
“300”
“But doctor…” The resident began
“Now!” Olivia ordered, “Shock!”
There was still no sign of change
“To 360”
“Doctor, we cannot do that, protocol..”
“What is your position in this hospital?” Olivia asked the resident, fury in her eyes as she fought so hard to keep her emotions in check. Ethan’s father was dying and yet, there was little or nothing she could do to save him. She just had to keep trying with a little hope, if there was any at all.
“I am a resident.” The resident doctor replied
“And I am your attending, you answer to me and do what I tell you to, is that clear?”
“Now! Shock” Olivia screamed but there was still no activity
“You can’t die on me, please, you can’t die now. Increase it again!” She said in tears, and continued compressions on the man’s chest
“It is a biphasic defibrillator; unfortunately, this is the highest we can go.” The resident doctor said
“We have to call it in.” He continued and Olivia’s head instantly flipped up
“No! No! We have to revive him, we have to revive him.“She cried out, losing her composure

Chapter 57
“Doctor Olivia…” He began, looking at Olivia with concern as tears streamed down her face. With a deep breath, she gave a small no
“Time of death 1:00am, 14th July, 2025, Cause: Myocardial Infarction. Prepare the body and alert the relatives. The doctor said to the nurse
“I’ll inform the relatives of his death instead.“Olivia’s voice caught as she said that last word, tears welling up in her eyes again
All she could think of was how she was going to tell Ethan that his father had just died, and she could not save him.
She walked to her office, her shoulders slumped. Once in the privacy of her office, she let the tears fall, as well as allow herself to cry out
loud,
She knew that she had been unprofessional back there; she had not only gone against the hospital protocol, but she had also been irrational and had acted irritable. She had known that the resident doctor was right, but she could not do anything.
Yet, despite everything, she still lost him; she couldn’t save him.
How on earth did that happen? he had been perfectly fine when she had left the hospital, she had made sure to check on him, she had told the nurse to keep a 24/7 eye on him
These thoughts raced through Olivia’s mind as guilt filled her; if only she had been there on time.
He had already been dead by the time she arrived. Trying to revive him was fruitless, but she had to try at least. She had to revive Ethan’s
father
But to no avail, he was already gone, and now she was dreading the worst part of her job, telling the relatives about the loss of their loved
one
But the problem here was that it was not a stranger, it was Ethan, and she could not even bear to face him.
Ethan walked to the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of water, not bothering to use a cup; he gulped it all down in one go.
Wiping his mouth and grabbing a glass, he sat down at the bar as he poured himself a glass
of bourbon.
He looked at the time displayed on the clock beside him. It was showing 5am. He had slept for a short while, but at least it was something.
Insomnia was no stranger to Ethan; he had battled with it for a while and was still battling with it.
He scrolled down the screen of his phone to the last message that Olivia had sent. The notification tone was probably what had woken him
up
He had forgotten to change it back from the “My Little Pony” soundtrack that Eva had set it to
Ethan shook his head fondly as he made a mental note to go visit the kids. It was high time they started making plans to bring Noah back, or maybe he could bring both of them back; the divorce was already in progress
Once everything was settled, he would bring them back and finally ask Olivia to move in with him, under the guise of her taking care of the kids.
He knew it was a shameless thing to do, but he had run out of options. That was the only way to have her by his side, close to him like he always wanted.
Ethan had not let a day pass without telling Olivia how he felt about her and how he hoped they could come back together
Despite all the persuasion, Olivia, for some reason, still believed Bryan was a good man, and this infuriated Ethan to no end.

Chapter 57
There was nothing he could do at this point, he could only wait for Olivia to realise that fact on her own. He had wanted to give up on his pursuit of Olivia’s affections; she had seemed so unchanging in her decision, but there was one moment that changed everything
Saw the softness and desire in her beautiful eyes, it sounded like he was insane, but he knew what he had
The moment he saw her waver, he seen, and was sure that there was still hope for him, still hope for them to have a life with their kids away from all this craziness
Ethan tapped on the message notification to open it and reveal the message Olivia had sent
‘We need to talk, I’ll come over to your house instead, you
don’t need to come to me‘
Ethan scrunched his face in confusion, The message sounded out of character. Olivia was not one to ask him to talk or one to even insist on coming over
She had sent the message around 4:58am.
Why on earth was she awake by that time? Had something happened? Did someone happen to take the kids? Or did Bryan try to harm her?
So many questions filled Ethan’s mind as he tried to decipher Olivia’s message.
“But if she was hurt, she would have asked me to come help her, not to come here. Fuck! This is so confusing. But what if?” Ethan mumbled to himself as his eyes widened, the corner of his lips lifting up in a grin
Maybe she had realised that Bryan was not the one for her, maybe she had finally let herself feel what they had together.
Ethan poured back the remaining contents of his glass and let out a satisfied sigh.
Olivia had finally decided to be his, and that was all that mattered; nothing else.
