Chapter 61
Chapter 61
It had been a week since Olivia had woken up to find herself alone on Ethan’s bed with Ethan nowhere to be found after the hot night they both had.
She had found a note that said he had to attend to something important and she could let herself out.
Initially, she had stayed all day waiting for him, but when he never showed up, she realized he was avoiding her.
The guilt that filled her ate away at her insides. She felt so guilty for doing that to Bryan, but at the same time, for some reason, she did not regret doing that with Ethan
Sex with Ethan was different from sex with Bryan. With Bryan, Olivia felt it was a chore that had to be done; she enjoyed it, but no one made her feel the way Ethan did. It was different
“Doctor..” The nurse interrupted her overflowing thoughts at that moment
“Oh yes, what is it?” She asked as she looked down at the diagnosis sheet in front of her. The past week had been terrible.
“One of your patients was admitted to the emergency unit, bay 5.”
“Which patient is that? The trauma doctors can take care of that.” Olivia said as she penned down the conclusive diagnosis she had arrived at from all the tests the patient had taken.
“It is Luce, the little girl with leukemia.”
“Luce? Why was she admitted?”
Olivia asked with alarm in her voice, putting on her lab coat, and began heading to the emergency and trauma unit with the nurse behind her
“Have you informed the pediatric oncologist, Dr Chase, that she is her doctor? Is he aware? Olivia asked as she punched the buttons in the elevator
“Doctor Chase believes that she is relapsing.” The nurse replied as she looked down at the information sheet on her tablet
“Oh God” Olivia breathed out
“Send me her vitals taken at her admission.”
“Yes, doctor..”
The elevator doors opened, and Olivia walked to Bay 5, where Luce lay with an IV infusion connected to her and other machines
She had diagnosed Luce with Leukemia when she was five, and it was confirmed by Dr. Chase, one of the best Pediatric Oncologists in the country. Luce was always in and out of the hospital every day
It was one of the cases that Olivia fought for with every drop of sweat she could, from putting her on the waiting list for a bone marrow transplant, to making sure she could get proper treatment
She felt it so deeply, sometimes she could feel the torment that Luce’s mum was going through whenever she imagined Eva on that bed. The only difference was, Ethan was the only person going through such torment because Shirley never cared.
That thought repulsed her more than anything. Seeing Luce back here was one of the worst things ever. The percentage of relapse was medium, but the percentage of surviving a relapse was so low that it was barely nonexistent
“What happened?” Olivia asked Dr Chase who was connecting Luce to an EKG machine
“An EKG?” She asked again
Dr Chase shook his head, using his head to point at Luce’s mum at the reception desk, in tears

“She collapsed in school and fell down a few stairs, luckily not so much as to cause irreversible damage or something of that sort. But her nium kayath. has been having symptoms for the past month.”
“But she was here last month for her monthly check–up, how did we miss that?”
Olivia asked as she assisted Chase with the EKG machine
“That was exactly what I thought; that’s when I realized that this was more awful than we ever thought it was.”
“What?” She questioned in alarm
“I fear there’s been some asymptomatic bone marrow involvement, and because of its asymptomatic nature, it is almost impossible to notice any signs of these even with a biopsy till it has progressed.” Dr Chase explained
“The new bone marrow?”
“Yes, I feel it has begun attacking it; that would explain the symptoms the mother said she has been complaining of: the fatigue, the weight loss, the fever and the chills, the bone and joint pains, and the bruising too. I reckon that there are swollen lymph nodes and a swollen spleen too.”
“Her EKG activity is normal,” Olivia said as she adjusted the settings of the machine
“That is good because we may need to have a splenectomy done.
“A splenectomy? Chase, she is too young for that; she is just seven.” She said as she scrolled through the vitals sheet the nurse had sent to her
“Get me a Med Cart,” Olivia told one of the nurses who wheeled one to her
“You’ve been ordered to have a biopsy and an MRI done.” she read out as she scrolled through Luce’s records and tests
“Yes, that is the only way that we know for sure if it is a relapse or just an illness caused by her weak immune system. It is flu season after all.”
At that moment, Luce stirred on the bed, her eyes opening sleepily and dazed
“Mummy..” She called out softly, looking around frantically
“Hey Luce” Olivia muttered as she held the little girl’s hand in hers
“Dr Livvie,” Luce said with a wide smile on her face.
“How are you today, my beautiful girl?” Olivia asked her
“It hurts everywhere, and I’m very tired.” She moaned.

“Don’t worry, you will get better very soon and leave here with your Mum, okay?”
Luce nodded
“Okay, I’ll go get your Mum now. I’ll be back with your favorite too.”
“Cheetos?” Luce asked excitedly
“Yes, baby, Cheetos,” Olivia replied, she dropped a kiss on Luce’s forehead and left the bay
“Your attachment to your patients isn’t good..” Olivia heard Chase say as they both walked down to the reception
“Do not act like you’re not attached to the little girl, too. In some way, she has made a place in all our hearts.
“Mrs Montgomery.” Chase called out, avoiding the truth that Olivia spoke, “Would you come with me to my office? I would like to explain a few things to you.”

“Dr Olivia.” Mrs Montgomery, Luce’s mum, began, her face so pale and her eyes swollen. When Olivia stared at her, she instantly know that du kan crying the entire time. She knew how much it was hurting, but it was better to stay strong for her daughter
*Luce is fine, I promise,” Olivia uttered with a nod, reassuring the distressed woman.
