Chapter 8
This has to be wrong! There’s been some kind of mistake!”
The head of surgery adjusted his glasses: “Mr. Reid, there’s no mistake. You are definitely the biological father of the donor.“[]
“Didn’t your family tell you? When we discovered the half–match results, your wife still insisted on going through with the surgery.:[]
“We happened to have your DNA sample on file from when you donated to the hospital foundation. The results were conclusive.“[]
It felt like lightning struck him. He just stood there, frozen.
The truth hit him with zero warning in the most brutal way possible.
That brilliant kid who he’d felt weirdly connected to. The one who saved his baby daughter’s life.[]
The same kid he’d basically pushed into donating bone marrow.[]
She was actually his own flesh and blood![]
the shock completely overwhelmed him.[]
Gabriel looked up sharply: “I need to see her. Right now!“]

Hours passed. The sun went down and Gabriel still wasn’t home.[]
Mom was pacing around anxiously. Grandma was holding baby Grace, her voice shaky: “Do you think he knows everything?“[]
That’s when Gabriel walked in wearing his business suit, radiating pure ice–cold fury.
Mom immediately rushed over: “Gabriel, where have you been? I was so worried…“[]
Gabriel looked at her face and suddenly flashed back to that cold, stiff body in the hospital morgue.]
Disgust and agony hit him like a freight train.[]
He instinctively shoved Mom away from him.[]
Mom stumbled backward into the hallway table, staring at him in shock.[]
Gabriel moved toward her step by step, his eyes blood–red, every word grinding out through clenched teeth:[]
“Tell me how you could do it, How?”
“How could you watch your own daughter die like that? What kind of monster does that to their own child?]
Mom saw the pure hatred in his eyes. The truth was finally out.]
After the initial panic wore off, this twisted sense of desperation and righteousness took over.[]
“Yes, I’m a monster!“]]
“But what was I supposed to do? HUH?! Gabriel, you tell me how else was I gonna save Grace? Use your bone marrow? Use mine? Just let our baby die?“[]
She stepped closer, tears mixed with crazy rage:[]
”
“Her only purpose was to save Grace! She traded her worthless life for our daughter’s life–what’s wrong with that?“]
Isn’t that what she’s supposed to do as a big sister? As part of this family?“[]
Gabriel was shaking with rage at her twisted logic.]
“She was MY daughter!”
“You lied to me! You deceived me! And you think you’re in the right?“[]
Mom laughed like she’d heard the best joke ever:[]

“Oh, NOW you know she’s your daughter? Who gave the okay for her to get tested? Who pushed her to donate?”
“Gabriel, don’t act like your hands are clean. You think you don’t have her blood on them too?”
Those words hit him like a sledgehammer to the chest.[]
His face went white and he staggered backward.[]
She was right. His coldness, his neglect, his silent approval–he was part of what killed her.
Gabriel looked at Mom.]
Those eyes that used to be warm and loving were now dead and filled with bottomless regret.]
