Chapter 6 Vivian Bennett, Have You No Shame?

As he started walking towards us, Vivian Bennett mustered up the courage to grab his arm.

Chadwick Carter glanced at her sideways.

It seemed like she was scared of something, so she shook her head slightly.

But seeing the impatience in Chadwick Carter’s eyes, she immediately released his arm and added, almost as if boasting, “One of them is my best friend.”

She pointed in my direction.

Chadwick Carter motioned for his friends to go ahead, then walked toward us.

Vivian Bennett tried to follow, but he didn’t allow it.

I saw the reluctance in her eyes, but she had no say in the matter. She could only obediently go wait outside.

“Mr. Smith, brought the students for dinner?” Chadwick Carter sat beside my mentor.

My mentor smiled and introduced, “This is Mr. Chadwick Carter, the CEO of Cloudcrest Biotech. We’ve

worked with his company before.”

Hearing this, my classmates all gave him polite nods.

I stayed in the crowd, neither overly warm nor too distant.

I expected him to leave after exchanging pleasantries.

But to my surprise, it seemed like he found something of interest here, and he stayed.

After drinking a couple of glasses of wine with my mentor, he chatted briefly with my classmates about their research topics.

Finally, he looked at me: “Miss. Sophie, what direction is your research in?”

He smiled, his eyes fixed on me.

I set down my chopsticks and replied calmly, “Cell regeneration.”

Before I could say more, my mentor started praising me: “You might think Sophie is young, but she’s mature in how she handles things. Her research has already yielded good results, and I believe her work will be put to use in the market soon.”

“Oh, really?” Chadwick Carter’s lips curved upward, a smile spreading across his face, but it didn’t quite reach his eyes. “Mr. Smith, we’ve been working together for a while. When the results come out, we should prioritize choosing our company for the collaboration:”

With that, he took out his business card and handed it to me. “Miss. Sophie, if you need help, feel free to contact me. Don’t let other companies take advantage of your work.”

I couldn’t refuse him in front of everyone, so I accepted the card.

He exchanged a few more words with my mentor before getting up to leave.

As he walked past me, I felt his gaze linger on me for a moment.

Instantly, a chill ran down my back.

In my past life, I never had any direct interaction with Chadwick Carter.

But this time, because the timeline of my past life wasn’t carried over, he noticed me.

“Sophie, Mr. Carter only gave you his business card. It seems like he’s quite interested in you.’

I froze for a moment.

Interested in me?

A creepy thought suddenly flashed through my mind.

Could he possibly want both Vivian Bennett and me?

No wonder Vivian Bennett’s behavior had been so odd earlier.

She must have sensed Chadwick Carter’s interest in me, and she was afraid that he might be attracted to me.

But later, she realized something: if he really wanted something, she wouldn’t be able to stop it. She might

as well introduce me to him herself and, in return, get him to owe her a favor.

I didn’t know what Chadwick Carter wanted to do.

But all I felt for Vivian Bennett was growing disdain.

I understood her twisted thoughts all too well. She was afraid she couldn’t hold onto the big fish, so she was

willing to sacrifice me when the time came.

Just like how she didn’t want to break up with Mark Hernandez but was using me to replace her at the altar.

So, I didn’t even look at the business card. When I left, I tossed it into the trash.

What I didn’t expect was that, right after I threw it away, my phone buzzed.

A message came through: “It seems like you have a problem with me?”

I froze in place.

He saw it?

I quickly looked around, and soon, the car window across the street rolled down.

Chadwick Carter was looking in my direction, dialing my number.

I didn’t pick up and quickly hung up.

He seemed quite interested and sent another message: “What are you afraid of?”

I replied, “I’m not afraid.”

It felt like I was saying tongue twisters.

Soon, another message appeared on my screen: “Vivian Bennett gave me your phone number.”

I knew it.

But I didn’t understand the meaning behind what he was saying.

The next second, his message came through: “Let’s have dinner tomorrow. Would you honor me with your

company?”

“Sorry, I have an experiment to work on, no time.”

“I checked with Mr. Smith, and you’re off tomorrow.”

“I have my own plans. If it’s about research topics, you can talk to my mentor.”

He didn’t let up: “If you don’t meet me, I’ll wait downstairs at your place until you do.”

I snorted and typed a few words: “Suit yourself.”

He didn’t send another message, and soon I heard the sound of the car starting.

He left.

I let out a sigh of relief.

But when I got home and lay in bed, my phone rang. It was Vivian Bennett calling.

“Did he come to you?” she asked.

I didn’t answer.

On the other end, Vivian Bennett began mocking and ridiculing me: “Do you know why he’s interested in you? Because he likes innocent college women.”

“Sophie, you’re nowhere near as good as me, not good at dressing, but dull. He only wants your number

because you’re my best friend.”

“Don’t think you can just dream these things up.”

“Are you done?” I coldly cut her off. “I’m hanging up.”

I ended the call, cutting off her yelling and mocking from the other side.

I knew she was furious because I could tell she was starting to feel insecure.

She was afraid she might lose her position.

And she was scared I might replace her.

But she was disappointed. I had no interest in the people in their world.

I felt the same way about Chadwick Carter, who treated women like toys.

I just wanted to focus on my research, live my life, and stay away from Vivian Bennett.

So I blocked all her contact information.

But to my surprise, she came home the next day!

When my mom brought me to her house for dinner, she came over, carrying big bags of gifts for everyone.

They were all high-end items, looking very expensive.

Her mother asked coldly, “Where did you get the money for all this?”

She smiled brightly: “My boyfriend is rich. He bought these for you. Mom, this beauty device costs 30,000!”

“Dad, this imported wine is from abroad. You can’t even buy it outside! Look.”

“Sophie, I got you a bag too.”

She pulled out a Chanel bag and handed it to me.

I didn’t take it.

She scoffed: “Do you know how much this bag costs? You’re studying that worthless degree. Do you know how long you’d have to work to afford this?”

Her mother suddenly stood up and asked, “Vivian Bennett, are you a mistress or being kept by someone?”

I froze.

I didn’t expect her to ask so bluntly.

Vivian Bennett laughed awkwardly and tried to act like she did before, trying to play coy with her mother.

But her mother avoided her: “What do you mean worthless degree? Sophie’s research is useful to the country and society. Do you think just because you have some money, you can look down on everyone?”

“She’s your sister. Watch your words and apologize to her!”

Vivian Bennett’s face turned pale, then immediately exploded: “Mom, why are you biased against her? I’m your biological daughter!”

“Besides, what’s wrong with what I said? I make more money than her now, why can’t I say that?”

“Where did your money come from? You don’t have a job, you didn’t come home, and you can afford all this?

You take me for some kind of fool?”

Vivian Bennett’s mother sighed heavily.

Vivian Bennett stubbornly replied, “What does it matter where the money comes from? Isn’t making money exactly what you raised me to do? Some people would kill to be in my position – why don’t you send Sophie out and see what price she can fetch? Bet she couldn’t even come close.”

Smack-her father slapped her across the face. “Shameless, disgraceful thing!”
