Chapter 8 The Heir to an Old-money Dynasty Set His Eyes on Me, Vivian Bennett Has Gone Mad

Vivian Bennett tried to say something, but failed.

Everyone in the room knew this was impossible.

Then, Beth White spoke up: “I’ve always liked Mark Hernandez, but I never interfered with your relationship. I just quietly admired him. Even after I found out he had a girlfriend, I cut off all contact. It was only after your engagement was called off that I gathered the courage to give myself a chance. Vivian Bennett, thank you. Because of you, Mark and I are now together. We’re happily married and have a lovely family. As a woman, I don’t want to judge; I just hope you won’t regret the choices you’re making today.”

Beth White spoke softly, politely, and with no hint of jealousy or mockery.

In fact, there was a trace of goodwill in her words.

“Today, we’ve brought gifts. We’d like to wish Mr. and Mrs. Bennett a happy Christmas in advance. We still

have to go get the holiday goods, so we won’t bother you further.”

Mark Hernandez took Beth White’s hand and said to us, “Mr. and Mrs. Bennett, we’ll come again another

day. You don’t have to see us off.”

Vivian Bennett’s mother felt embarrassed. After all, they had come to bring gifts, but Vivian Bennett had

said such things to them.

She shot a few angry glares at Vivian, then walked over to take Beth White’s hand. “Beth, please do come

again. I will make your favorite Pot roast for you. But today, we won’t keep you.”

Beth White smiled sweetly. “Thank you, Mrs. Bennett. I love your cooking. We’ll definitely come again.”

“Hmph, so pretentious. Acting like this is her own home now.”

Vivian Bennett sneered sarcastically.

But no one paid her any attention.

Mark Hernandez and Beth White left.

Vivian Bennett glared at their backs, gnashing her teeth, then started accusing her mother: “You’re so warm and welcoming to a stranger, and now you’re still my mother?”

Vivian Bennett’s mother didn’t even look at her. “You said you wanted to sever ties with us. I don’t have a daughter like you anymore.”

With that, she turned and walked back to her room.

Vivian Bennett’s father shot a glance at her and didn’t say a word. He closed the door.

Seeing that no one was paying attention to her, she looked at me.

Just then, my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number. When I answered, I accidentally hit the speakerphone button.

Chadwick Carter’s voice came through: “I’m downstairs at your building. Don’t you want to join me for a

meal?”

Vivian Bennett’s face turned green with anger.

I calmly replied, “I’m not available,” and hung up the phone.

I could clearly feel her expression soften slightly.

But soon,

her eyes filled with resentment: “Sophie, Chadwick Carter is just playing with you.

I raised an eyebrow at her. “Isn’t he doing the same with you?”

She stuttered, but as she was about to leave, she said to me, “Stop dreaming. I’ve already secured the

position of Mrs. Carter.”

I sneered inwardly. Well, let’s see if you really have the capability to achieve that.

After Vivian Bennett left, she didn’t come back for Christmas. I didn’t pay attention to her messages, unsure if she was traveling the world with Chadwick Carter again.

Until the school reopened, Chadwick Carter came to the school to meet me.

That day, I went to speak with my mentor about the research. He was sitting in the office, watching me with

a smirk on his face.

I pretended he didn’t exist and sat across from my mentor, holding my documents.

I hadn’t taken a break during the vacation because I wanted to shorten the time it took for my results to

corne out. So, I wrote a report and asked my mentor to take a look.

Since I was reborn, who would go looking for a man?

I was focused on building my own career!

With the memories from my past life, my research and report were solid. After my mentor read them, he said he’d help me contact journals for publication. He spoke with genuine praise: “Sophie, I wasn’t wrong You’ve made this much progress in just six months. I really admire you. I believe your research will change society and help many companies tackle tough problems.”

about

you.

“It’s all thanks to you, mentor,” I humbly replied, looking down.

“You should apply for a patent for this technology first. I’m sure many companies will be reaching out to you for collaboration soon.”

“Mr. Smith, I’m still here. You’re not planning to collaborate with me anymore?” Chadwick Carter suddenly spoke up, teasing me lightly.

“Well, I’m really disappointed,” he added with a smile.

“Your company will definitely be considered first. But since this is Sophie’s work, the decision is ultimately

hers.”

My mentor was a good man, as he had been in my past life.

He had never taken advantage of students, stealing their research or using them as free labor.

He was a respected teacher.

“Mrs. Sophie, you’ll have to make sure you accept our offer to have a meal with us,” my mentor added.

I was about to decline, but my mentor nodded at me and said, “Yes, we scholars can’t remain stagnant. Our

work needs to be applied to make its value known. Sophie, you can visit Cloudcrest Biotech. Whether or not

we collaborate, the decision is yours.”

Since my mentor had said it, I couldn’t politely refuse. I agreed for the time being.

As we walked out together, Chadwick Carter looked down at me with a faint smile: “It seems like you really

don’t like me?”

“That’s your misconception. We only met because of Mr. Smith, and this is only our second meeting. There’s

no need for me to like or dislike you.

“Why do you keep rejecting me?” Chadwick Carter, handsome with his charming eyes, looked at me in a way that made me feel like I was the only one in his sight.

I thought, perhaps, this was one of the reasons Vivian Bennett had fallen for him.

But I wasn’t her.

“I think the relationship between Mr. Carter and me isn’t at the point where we need to meet privately. If it’s about my research, you’ve already learned everything from Mr. Shen. As for Vivian Bennett, I think there’s no need. She’s her own person, and I’m mine. I’m sure you understand, Mr. Carter.”

After I finished, Chadwick Carter’s gaze flickered for a moment before he smiled: “You’re very smart.”

“Thank you, I know.”

“I like smart girls,” he said.

“But I only like someone who’s my equal and can connect with me mentally,” I replied.

Chadwick Carter smiled, his expression showing determination: “Interesting.”

I took a step back: “Mr. Carter doesn’t need to look for me. I’ll be busy with my research papers, I won’t have

time.”

As I turned to leave, I heard his voice: “Sophie, I’ll wait for you.”

Wait for me?

Then make me your next prey?

I sneered inwardly but didn’t turn around.

In order to publish my paper, I spent all my time in the library, but Chadwick Carter kept appearing in my line of sight under various pretenses.

It seemed like this was just a chase game for him.

The more I rejected him, the more he found it interesting.

But I understood. This had nothing to do with love-only conquest.

Half a year passed before I realized that my research was ahead of where it was in my previous life. After applying for the patent, many companies reached out, hoping to collaborate.

Including Chadwick Carter’s company.

One day, he was waiting outside our lab, the sunset casting a long shadow over him.

He smiled at me: “Mrs. Sophie, you promised Mr. Shen that you’d join me for a meal. You wouldn’t go back on your word, would you?”
