Chapter 9 She Hired People to Defile Me

The lab was busy with people coming and going, and since I had already agreed to meet him, rejecting him

now would seem pretentious.

So I nodded.

He wanted to take me to a high-end place, but I stopped him and chose a Korean restaurant just outside the

campus.

As we sat down, Chadwick Carter raised an eyebrow at me: “This is my first time at a place like this.”

“Well, this is my everyday life,” I replied calmly.

I set the bowls and utensils, and Chadwick Carter looked at me: “Aren’t you going to help me?”

I paused for a moment, realizing that for someone like him, accustomed to having everything done for him,

even a simple meal would usually come with someone serving him.

But I didn’t want to serve him.

“There’s water on the table. You can try doing it yourself. Of course, this is just my habit, and all the utensils

have been sanitized, so there shouldn’t be any problems.”

He looked at me for a while, then slowly started preparing his bowl himself.

I smiled slightly, thinking to myself that even without help, he managed just fine.

“Sophie, it’s the first time I’ve seen you smile since I’ve known you,” he said.

I pursed my lips and took a sip of water.

He handed me a handkerchief,

I didn’t take it.

He withdrew it, his gaze resting on my face as he smiled: “I thought you were playing hard to get.”

I knew he was testing me, so I responded frankly: “Mr. Carter, you’re overthinking it. We live in completely different worlds. You have your vast fortune, and I have my own pursuits. I don’t have time to play games of cat and mouse with you, nor do I have the energy to navigate your world and your so-called games of desire. I’m busy.”

He stared at me, then slowly stopped smiling. “You’re very different from Vivian Bennett.”

Vivian Bennett.

It had been a long time since I’d heard that name.

Seemingly sensing my thoughts, Chadwick Carter spoke with an edge of coldness: “I had her locked up in a villa on the outskirts of Beijing.”

The word “locked” made me uncomfortable.

But I thought, maybe this was the life Vivian Bennett had always wanted.

Trapped in a gilded cage created by those in power, a canary that would never escape.

I didn’t care about her current life choices.

I just carried on with dinner with Chadwick Carter, and also told him that I would be meeting with several other companies for comparisons.

“Is it cruel of me?” he joked. “I’ve been waiting for your technology for half a year.’

I lowered my head: “No one asked you to wait.”

His waiting was just a distraction, a way to waste time, chasing after something with no meaning.

I was clear about that.

“Well, since you’re so heartless, I’ll have to put in more effort,” he said.

I didn’t respond, hoping to wrap up this dinner with ulterior motives as quickly as possible.

As we walked out, the summer evening breeze was cool. Chadwick Carter prepared to take off his jacket to give it to me, but I stopped him: “The school is just around the corner, Mr. Carter, you don’t need to walk

me.”

As I turned, I thought I saw a familiar figure in the corner of my eye.

It looked like Vivian Bennett.

But didn’t Chadwick Carter say she was locked up?

I stopped and turned to take a closer look, but the figure had disappeared.

Chadwick Carter, still standing where he was, saw me look back and smiled: “Figured it out?”

I shook my head, quickly walking ahead.

In the following days, I met with several companies based on Mr. Shen’s advice.

Chadwick Carter, seemingly knowing where I was, always waited until I was done.

He didn’t speak, and neither did 1, pretending not to notice.

Until one day, I deliberately chose a location a few kilometers away from the school.

Finally, I didn’t see him.

But instead, I saw Vivian Bennett.

It had been a while since I saw her, and she looked terribly gaunt.

There were dark circles under her eyes, like she hadn’t been sleeping well.

She had lost even more weight, looking like a gust of wind could blow her away.

“Sophie, you bitch!” she screamed, charging at me.

I managed to dodge.

She didn’t stop, her claws outstretched: “Why do you always want what’s mine? Why are you stealing from

me?!”

“You’re deliberately trying to seduce Chadwick Carter, aren’t you?”

“You talked badly about me to him, didn’t you?”

“He hasn’t come to see me for a while, and now I know it’s because you, this bitch, stole him away from

me.”

I felt like Vivian Bennett had completely lost her mind.

I also realized that the person I had seen in the corner that night was indeed her.

She had been following me.

And she had been following me for a long time.

She must have seen Chadwick Carter and me having dinner, and after the dinner, she waited for him to try to

walk me back to school.

But what she didn’t see was that I completely ignored him.

I stepped back and coldly stared at her: “Vivian Bennett, look at what you’ve become now. What’s the difference between you and a shrew? You graduated from university, you received a good education, and yet you’re not ashamed of being kept by someone, even finding pride in it. You’ve even developed delusional paranoia and think I’m the same as you.”

She paused for a moment, but didn’t listen to a word I said.

“Who doesn’t want a better life?”

She flashed her diamond ring at me: “Do you know how much this cost? People envy me when I post it online. I post a picture of my bag and people praise me: I post a picture of afternoon tea and get showered

with attention. Everyone wants a life like mine, including you, Sophie. Stop pretending to be so high and mighty.”

I sighed, not wanting to argue with her.

After all, you can never wake up someone who is pretending to sleep.

Moreover, the painful lessons of my past life had taught me that meddling in other people’s business would only get me killed.

So I took a few steps back: “I don’t want to argue with you. I’m heading back to school.”

Vivian Bennett suddenly laughed manically: “You think you can leave now?”

I didn’t understand what she meant by that.

A malicious look I had never seen before appeared on her face: “If you lose your innocence, Chadwick Carter won’t look at you anymore.”

Before I could react, a few thugs suddenly rushed out from nowhere.

I immediately turned and ran.

But the difference in strength between men and women was too vast.

I was quickly caught.

As they dragged me away, I heard Vivian Bennett’s laughter: “Sophie, once you’ve been tainted, no one will

love you anymore.”

So she hated me this much?

Even though in this life, I hadn’t made decisions for her and had allowed her to choose her own path.

She still wanted to do this to me.

It seemed like she thought that if I were out of the picture, Chadwick Carter would finally like her.

What she didn’t realize was that without Sophie, there would still be Fang Nian, Zhang Nian…

And countless others who would show up.

She never understood the essence of the situation.

She didn’t look for the cause in men, instead blaming everything on me.

I felt a chill run through me, as if I couldn’t breathe.

Vivian Bennett and I had been sisters for over twenty years in this life.

And now, she was doing this to me.

I finally realized: she was beyond saving.

But now, all I could focus on was how to get out of this situation.

Looking at those lecherous faces, I had to think fast to escape!
