Chapter 15
Howard frowned slightly.
When Alyssa saw Megan’s name flashing on his phone, confusion flickered in her eyes–along with something else she quickly concealed.
“Howard?” Alyssa called softly when she noticed his hesitation
Howard snapped back to his senses. Megan was calling right after Alyssa had shown him the scandal of her late–night visit. Was Megan calling to yell at
him?
He rejected the call. A few seconds later, his phone buzzed again—it was Megan. This time, irritation crossed his face.
“Aren’t you going to answer her call, Howard?” Alyssa asked.
Howard immediately rejected the call again before silencing her number. “Just ignore it,” he said coolly.
Alyssa looked as though she wanted to speak but held her tongue. She nodded hesitantly, unsettled on the surface, but when she lowered her head, delight flashed in her eyes.
She had orchestrated this. She had purposely mentioned the clip she uploaded that morning, showed Howard the latest scandal, and reminded him again and again so that he would ignore Megan’s calls.
“Let’s go home. It’s late,” Howard said, grabbing his coat and helping her up.
They took the CEO’s private elevator down from the top floor.
While paparazzi photos of them inside the building were spreading online, Megan was being carried out of an ambulance.
As the gurney was quickly pushed into the hospital, blood oozed from Megan’s forehead and stained the white mattress red. Megan was barely conscious.
She forced her eyes open and saw the ceiling lights flashing overhead. She could hear the female police officer’s anxious voice amidst the cacophony of background noises.
“I called her husband twice, but he refused to answer both times. What do I do now?”
“Should we try calling him again?”
“What if he still won’t pick up?”
“Forget it! Her car’s a wreck! Even though the only visible injury is the one on her forehead, we don’t know if she has any internal injuries!”
“Take her to the hospital first! Keep calling her husband as well!“”
“Understood!”
What followed was another burst of noise. It seemed like they were arguing about something at the hospital.
Megan drifted in and out of consciousness, the air thick with disinfectant. She vaguely registered heated arguments… then Selena’s voice. She was yelling about something.
As Megan was rushed into the emergency room,
darkness swallowed her whole.
Selena was furious. She was so scared when she saw Megan wheeled in, her head covered in blood.
Fortunately, she had been sent to Acreport Hospital. Selena had been working overtime and had come to check the commotion.
They had just been discussing how to handle Megan. In an emergency like this, no one else knew Megan was pregnant. It was fortunate that she was
aware of her condition.
Her father’s position as the hospital’s director made her rage surprisingly effective at speeding things up. Otherwise, there was no telling what might have happened to Megan.
Spotting the female police officer trying to reach someone with Megan’s phone, Selena hurried over. After explaining she was both a doctor and Megan’s closest friend, she took the phone.
The endless string of rejected calls made her blood boil. Just then, her own phone buzzed with a notification.
She pulled out her phone, and her eyes widened at a post that had been recommended to her. The caption read, “Howard and Alyssa spotted leaving Larson Headquarters in the same car!”
So that was why he hadn’t answered. He was with that homewrecker. Selena immediately rang Howard.
Her first call was rejected. After some time, her second call connected.
“What do you want?” Howard asked coldly.
“What do I want?” Selena snapped. “Why didn’t you answer Megan’s calls?”
Sitting in his Aston Martin, Howard frowned. Realizing it was Selena, his tone grew icter. “Did Megan ask you to call me?”
“No!” Selena’s voice rose. “I called because I wanted to!”

The light turned red. Howard stepped on the brakes and glanced at his notifications. More than ten missed calls from Megan. He scoffed to himself. He was sure that Megan had asked Selena to call him.
When the light turned green, he drove on calmly. Megan had been calling nonstop ever since Alyssa showed up at Larson Headquarters. Did she really think he wouldn’t see through her intentions?
“Come to Acreport Hospital now!” Selena ordered.
“No,” Howard said firmly.
Megan must have gone to Selena to whine as usual. But she had crossed the line this time by asking Selena to confront him. Ever since the divorce, her temper had only worsened.
“She was hit by a car.” Selena’s voice dropped to a chilling calm. “Howard, if you still have a conscience, come.”
His car screeched to a halt. The driver behind leaned on the horn, cursing, but Howard barely heard over the constant beeping after Selena ended the call. His grip on the steering wheel tightened until his knuckles turned white.
In the passenger seat, Alyssa had overheard everything. Her phone lit up with a new notification, which she quickly hid before turning to Howard with feigned panic.
“Howard, something happened to Megan, didn’t it? We should hurry to the hospital!”
Alyssa looked extremely worried. “This isn’t a small matter. It could be a terrible accident!
“Thank goodness she was sent to Acreport Hospital. Isn’t Selena her best friend? At least Megan will have someone to care for her.
“Howard, let’s go now. Didn’t Megan call you more than ten times? The situation must be dire!”
Tears welled in her eyes, her voice trembling with worry. Yet when she lowered her head, calculation glinted in her gaze.
A car accident was serious enough. But Megan just happened to end up at her best friend’s hospital, where her best friend’s father was the director. And even with such a grave injury, she’d managed to call Howard over ten times.
Alyssa was subtly planting suspicion that Megan and Selena were exaggerating.
But she never let it show. She wept crocodile tears.
“Howard, I want to stay by your side. But if something really happened to Megan, I’ll regret it forever…”
She broke down sobbing, then suddenly turned away to retch. When she lifted her head, blood glistened at the corner of her lips.
Seeing how worried Howard looked, Alyssa discreetly tucked the fake blood capsule into her handbag. She shook her head weakly. “Don’t worry about me. Let’s just get to the hospital.“‘
Howard pursed his lips. Without another word, he restarted the engine and sped toward Acreport Hospital.
