Chapter 24
It was already light out when Megan woke up again. The morning sun shone through the window, painting the room with its pale golden rays.
“Meg, you’re awake!” Selena exclaimed.
Megan was still a little dazed, but when she laid eyes on Selena and Jimmy, who were wearing matching worried expressions, her entire body was assaulted by unbearable pain. She also remembered everything that had happened that led her to this moment.
“I…”
The rest of her words got stuck in her throat. An ominous feeling roiled in her chest when she registered the pain coursing through her body and remembered the bright red blood she had seen right before she lost consciousness.
“Meg…” Selena carefully helped Megan up into a sitting position. Her voice was colored with despair when she murmured, “The baby’s gone.”
Megan opened her mouth, wanting to say something, but in the end, she c could only numbly close it again. She was silent for a short while before she finally lowered her head and hummed in acknowledgement.
It was as if she didn’t have any reaction to the news of her miscarriage. She didn’t seem to be happy or sad, considering how calm her response was.
Selena and Jimmy exchanged looks with each other. In the end, Jimmy walked over and said, “Get lots of rest, Megan. You need to take good care of yourself. You were lucky enough not to break any bones when you rolled down the stairs, but you still sustained quite a few injuries.
”
“You also suffered a light concussion that you haven’t fully recovered from yet. There’s also the miscarriage…”
Jimmy softened his voice before he continued, as if he was worried that Megan would disappear from the world if he spoke a little too harshly. “As for the music show, I’ll pull you out for now. Later-”
Megan interrupted him before he could finish his sentence. “I want to join,” she said, curling her hands into tight fists under the blanket.
Her nails dug into her palms, breaking the skin and causing blood to leak from the wound. It was very painful, but the pain grounded her in reality.
Megan’s face was an emotionless mask as she leaned against the headboard. She lifted her head to look at Jimmy, saying, “I can do it.”
But there are only three days left before the first live broadcast,” Jimmy explained worriedly. “Your body…”
“I can do it,” Megan repeated calmly, though her fists were shaking under the blanket from how hard she was clenching them.
Selena and Jimmy exchanged looks with each other again. In the end, Jimmy conceded, saying, “Alright then.”
Megan lowered her eyes and loosened her fists upon hearing his words. “Thank you,” she murmured.
Jimmy shook his head. “It’s a mutually beneficial arrangement. You don’t need to thank me.”
He knew that Megan wouldn’t have trouble on the show at all based on her capabilities as long as she performed like she usually did.
Besides, the first live broadcast was dedicated to introductory performances. The elimination process would only begin during the second live broadcast, so it shouldn’t be an issue for Megan to participate in the show. He just felt heartbroken on her behalf.
Megan looked up and forced a smile onto her face, silently telling them that she was fine. However, everyone in the room knew that she was not fine at
all.
Unable to stay strong for much longer, she said, “I can’t prepare my stage costume and hire a makeup artist when I’m like this, Jim. Can you help me?”
“It’s part of the company’s responsibilities to handle those matters,” Jimmy answered with a nod.
“Can you help me right now?” she asked, leaving Jimmy at a loss for how to answer her.
Megan then looked at Selena and said, “I’m a little hungry, Lena. Can you get some food for me?”
Selena opened her mouth, looking as if she had something to say but didn’t know how to string the words together into a proper sentence. She looked at Megan in distress.
Meanwhile, Megan was all smiles as she looked at Selena and Jimmy, asking, “Can you do that for me?”
Her voice was colored with hints of pleasure. Selena and Jimmy exchanged one last look with each other, finally understanding what was going on. They then swiftly agreed to Megan’s requests. They strolled out of the ward, closing the door behind them.
Silence descended over the ward after they left. The smile on Megan’s face finally melted away as the curve of her lips turned downward. She felt a little cold since it was still April, so she burrowed herself back underneath the blankets.
It was cold–so cold that Megan had to cover her head with the blanket. She lost control over her emotions as she bit her fist, breaking the skin and causing blood to drip down her hand as she cried soundlessly.
