Operating on pure instincts, Howard sidestepped the hit.
“How dare you try to avoid my whacking?”
At the furious roar, Howard looked up to see Ronald standing before him.
“Grandpa.”
When Ronald stumbled, Howard immediately surged forward to help him. Seizing the opportunity, Ronald
whacked Howard on the arm using his walking stage.
“So, you do remember I’m your grandpa.” Ronald’s chest was heaving with anger. Pointing at Howard, he yelled, “I’d never have a grandson like you! Didn’t you go and watch Alyssa’s performance? Why did you
come back?”
As Ronald spoke, he pointed at the screen beside them.
Howard shot it a glance. “Celestial Voice” was being streamed live. They were now picking out teams. Alyssa was inviting people to join hers.
“Why are you continuing to watch it?” scolded Ronald.
Howard averted his eyes and sighed. “Grandpa.”
When Ronald ignored him, he turned to Bethany, his grandmother. “Grandma…”
“Don’t turn to me for help. I’m angry as well.”
Bethany patted Ronald’s back gently while saying, “I’ve been together with your grandfather for decades, and never once did he push me around for another woman. I thought you would treat Megan well. After all, we brought you up. It looks like we were wrong.”
“Grandma…”
“Stop whining! Go seek Megan out right now,” huffed Ronald. “You’ve got a wife. Yet, you went to watch another woman’s performance, and that even got broadcast live. Horrible rumors have been flying around. Megan would probably be furious if she found out.”
He pointed at Howard using his walking stick, ordering, “I don’t care how you go about it. You can swear your allegiance or plead on your knees. Either way, you’d better get her back!”
All of that had happened in mere minutes. The door to the office remained open, as Zander hadn’t even managed to close it.
As a result, Ronald’s scolding echoed through the entire floor.
With one hand clapped over the arm where Ronald had whacked him, Howard pursed his lips. He asked, ” Did Megan complain about this to you?”
Chapter 42
Ronald’s fury reached new heights. He grabbed his walking stick and began hitting Howard with it.
Bethany hurriedly went to hold Ronald up. He had always been weak. After whirling his stick around twice, Ronald paled. He seemed to be on the brink of fainting.
“Grandpa.” Howard reached out to help him as well, but Bethany shoved him away.
As she waved Zander over, she turned away from Howard while saying, “Howard, you grew up away from your parents. The two of us oldies hadn’t an idea of how to raise a child either. It was our fault you’ve grown up into the man that you are now.”
While Bethany spoke calmly, her words cut deep.
Suddenly, Howard began losing his composure.
Bethany didn’t look back at him. She only told Zander to help Ronald into a wheelchair before wheeling him toward the lift.
Howard wanted to follow, but Bethany stated, “If you want to anger your grandfather to the point where he dies of fury, come along. Otherwise, don’t come back to see us without Megan in tow.”
With that, Bethany stepped into the elevator, leaving Howard frozen in place.
All the employees on that floor were too scared to let out even the barest peep. It was as though they were all dumb and mute.
Only the sounds coming from the live broke through the oppressive silence.
There, Alyssa said into the microphone confidently, “Elena, you’re extremely talented. I admire you. If you join my team, I’ll help you craft amazing performances and ease your success. Will you join my team?” The emcee riled the crowd up by announcing, “Ladies and gentlemen, our judge, Alyssa, has officially invited Elena to join her team. Now, let’s see what Elena’s decision will be!”
Elena stepped forward, clad in her crimson rose performance outfit. She took the microphone from the
emcee.
