The moment Miles and Sierra stormed into the clinic, Hannah shrank behind Blake like a frightened rabbit. But Sierra was faster–her claws unsheathed as she seized Hannah by her perfectly styled hair.
“You vile, scheming bitch! How dare you hide? Do you know how old my nieces you couldn’t tolerate their existence? Are you even human?!”

Hannah shrieked as she hit the floor, but Blake was instantly at her side, shielding her with his body as he glared at his sister.
“Have you lost your mind? She’s carrying my child! If anything happens to the child
“Your child?” Sierra’s voice cracked with hysteria. “What about the children you already had? The ones you sent to their graves?!”
Blake’s jaw tightened. “Listen to me. That day, I merely brought Hannah home, and the girls screamed at her to get out. Is that how pups should speak to their elders? I’m their father–it I decide they need discipline at The Obedience Den, that’s my right!”
He scoffed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. “Fine. If you’re all so upset, I’ll bring them back. But stop with this ridiculous charade about them being dead. Lena’s lies don’t fool me-
Miles’s next strike sent Blake crashing into the wall
“ELDERS? SHE’S AMATE–SNATCHING WHORE!” Spittle flew from the old Alpha’s lips as he rained blows down on his grandson. “Those girls were protecting their mother! They were your heirs! Your blood!”
Blake didn’t fight back–couldn’t, not against the Alpha who’d raised him. He barely managed to dodge the next swing “Enough! We’re in public-”
“You think I care about your pride now?” Miles’s voice broke. “If I’d known you’d turn into this heartless monster, Lena to you. She had suffered for years because of my mistake. And now those innocent pups are gone!”

Tears carved paths through the wrinkles on Miles’s face.
“How could I let this nightmare happen to her? I had promised to her grandfather that I would treat her like my own blood. He entrusted me with his only granddaughter! And now you have ruined everything she had.”
The memory of Lena bowing to him earlier flashed before his eyes–her fragile frame trembling as she clutched that tattered teddy bear, her voice steady despite the devastation in her eyes.

With a final, disgusted look at Blake, Miles turned away.

Blake’s breath came in ragged gasps. He turned to Sierra, desperation bleeding into his voice.
“Tell me the truth. This is a trick, isn’t it? You’re all punishing me-”
Sierra thought of Lena’s shattered expression at the precinct, of the tiny bodies in the morgue. Her tears fell freely.
“That freaking Obedience Den tied them to chairs, Blake. They whipped them–Electrocuted them. Starved them. By the time we got there…” She swallowed hard, “It was too late.”
Now the girls are gone. Lena’s gone. You’ve got the freedom you always wanted.”
Without another word, she followed Miles into the night.
A high–pitched ringing filled Blake’s ears. He stumbled forward on instinct-
Hannah’s nails dug into his arm. “Blake! Where are you going?”

But when she looked up through her tears, he was already gone.
The man who’d once fretted over her slightest discomfort didn’t even glance back.
