Chapter 33
By the time I returned to my office, I felt lighter than I had in days, Caiden’s words replayed in my mind, their warmth lingering like sunlight breaking through a cloudy sky. For the first time in a while, I felt happy.
But the moment was short–lived.
I barely had time to sit down when the door opened. Aeson stepped in, his presence commanding as always. His expression was unreadable, but his tone was sharp, clipped. “You shouldn’t flex with him.”
I blinked, confused. “What?”
He took a step closer, his jaw tightening. “Caiden. Be professional with him.”
The reprimand stung more than I cared to admit. “I wasn’t-”
“I mean it, Serena,” he cut in, his voice carrying an edge that made my chest tighten. “Keep it professional.”
For a moment, I stared at him, trying to make sense of the sudden change in his demeanor. His tone wasn’t just authoritative–it felt…off.
Jealous?
No, that couldn’t be it. He was probably just angry because, objectively, Caiden’s behavior wasn’t professional. And yet, the way his hand flexed at his side and his gaze lingered on me told a different story.
I straightened my posture, refusing to let my thoughts wander further. “Understood, Alpha.”
But as he turned to leave, a flicker of something unspoken passed between us, hanging in the air like an unfinished sentence. And I couldn’t help but wonder–was this really just about professionalism?
The glow of the computer screen illuminated my desk as I worked through the morning’s reports. My tasks as an assistant were straightforward yet demanding–organizing their schedules, replying to correspondence, cross–checking details for upcoming meetings, and ensuring every department’s reports were filed on time. It was all routine, but it kept me busy enough to forget the tension lingering from earlier.
I was halfway through drafting an email when a knock on the door drew my attention. Jace stepped in, his expression unreadable as usual.
“Get ready. You’re going with the Alpha,” he announced, his tone clipped.
I blinked, setting down my pen. “To?”
“There’s an important meeting. You’re accompanying him.”
I nodded and rose. “Alright. I’ll be with Alpha Aeson shortly.“”
But Jace shook his head. “No. It’s not Aeson.”
My brows furrowed. “Uh?”
“He passed it on to Hades.”
“What?” The name alone felt like a stone dropping in my stomach.
“Yes. Get ready and meet him at the entrance of the company,” Jace said without another word before leaving.
The door clicked shut, and I stared at the now–quiet room. My chest tightened with disappointment. I had assumed it would be Aeson, and now… Hades? I let out a slow breath and checked the schedule. A ninety–minute meeting. This was going to be tough.
Why would Aeson pass this to Hades? I wondered, the sting of disappointment making my chest ache. Shaking off the thoughts, I stood, straightened my skirt, and brushed my hair back. Focus, Serena. You’re an assistant. Do your job, no matter who you’re assigned to.

I grabbed my notepad and beaded downstairs. As I stepped out, I spotted Hades leaning against his sleek black Aston Martin. His dark suit complemented the air of authority he carried effortlessly. He glanced up as I approached, his frown deepening when our eyes met.
“L… I’m sorry if I kept you waiting.” I said quickly, feeling the need to fill the silence.
He didn’t reply, simply opened the driver’s door and slid into the seat.
I hesitated, torn between sitting in the front or the back. My mind replayed his stern warning from before: “Keep your distance.” I bit my lip and reached for the back door handle.
“What are you doing?” His sharp voice made me freeze mid–motion.
“S…sitting here,” I stammered, inwardly cursing my nerves.
“Why?” His tone was low, almost annoyed.
“You said I should keep my distance…”

“Get in the front seat,” he cut in, his voice firm, leaving no room for argument. His piercing gaze met mine in the rearview mirror, making my heart skip a beat.
