Chapter 145

Chapter 145

Bob’s voice was grave and measured as if he’d carefully weighed his words before speaking. “Something strange is going on. I’ll explain in detail when I get back, but Lydia-”

Click. The sudden sound at the doorway was startlingly clear in the silent night.

Emily was startled and instinctively jumped back, snatching up the scissors she always kept by her bedside.

When she saw it was Lydia at the door, Emily lowered the scissors but kept her guard up. “What are you doing here?”

Lydia didn’t miss Emily’s jumpy reaction just now, feeling a flicker of curiosity. ‘Since when did this spoiled princess from her ivory tower become so skittish and on edge?’ she wondered.

Lydia didn’t press further. Putting on an innocent face, she explained sweetly, “I just wanted to talk to you about something, Emily. When I saw the door was open, I came right in. You’re not mad at me, are you?”

Emily was not sure how long Lydia had been standing there, or how much she’d overheard. But one thing she was absolutely certain of. She had definitely locked the door.

It was an instinctive habit of hers to secure herself whenever she entered a private, enclosed space.

Emily hung up and pocketed her phone. Then she looked at Lydia warily and asked, “What do you want?”

Lydia lingered at the doorway, not stepping inside. Feigning concern, she asked sweetly, “Yvonne mentioned you asked her out, Emily. Did anything happen between you two?”

Yvonne had called Lydia earlier, vowing to use this opportunity to teach Emily a lesson. But after waiting for hours, Lydia still hadn’t received the expected news from Yvonne.

Lydia called Yvonne back, feigning concern and pretending to talk her out of it, though in reality, she just wanted to find out what had happened.

Normally, Yvonne would spill all her plans without Lydia even needing to ask.

But this time, to Lydia’s surprise, Yvonne simply went along with her and said, “You’re

right, Lydia. I shouldn’t stoop to her level. For your sake, I won’t bother her anymore.”

Lydia gritted her teeth so hard she nearly cracked them.

‘All those times I tried to talk sense into her, she never listened. Now, who the hell cares if she suddenly gives up for my sake?’ Lydia thought.

But of course, Lydia couldn’t say any of that out loud. All she could do was come to Emily, hoping to fish for some information. Just as she reached the doorway-

Lydia’s eyes gleamed with calculation as she studied Emily’s reaction, hoping to catch a clue.

But from the moment their eyes met, Emily’s face remained an impenetrable mask of wariness and cold indifference.

Emily shot back, “Want to know what happened between us? Go ask Yvonne yourself. Aren’t you two such good friends?”

Emily kept the scissors firmly in her grip as she strode purposefully toward the door, raising her hand in warning.

Lydia’s gaze fixed on the scissors, and she instinctively recoiled, her guard instantly up.

But when Emily reached her, she simply slammed the door shut, making it clear she had no intention of saying another word.

Emily learned the hard way two years ago just how dangerous it is to be alone with Lydia. Now this was Emily’s room. If anything happened to Lydia here, Emily would never be able to prove her innocence.

Emily locked the door from the inside, her eyes fixed on it seriously. She was not sure how long Lydia was eavesdropping outside, but better safe than sorry.

‘At least I didn’t put the call on speaker. She probably only caught a few words from me, not who I was talking to,’ Emily wondered. ‘I’ve got nothing left to lose. If Lydia wants to come after me, let her.’

Just a single door stood between them. Lydia, too, fixed her gaze on it, her eyes deep with malice.

If it were anyone else, without the speakerphone on, there’d be no way to hear who was on the other end or what was being said. But Lydia had her own ways.
