Chapter 307
Chapter 307
Lydia’s words had seemed like just a casual remark, but for some reason. Mark kept them in mind and actually made the call himself.
Thinking about it now, he was filled with regret. He said. “If I’d known something like that would happen, I never would’ve made that call myself. I should’ve just waited until he got home before reaching out.”
He knew that his call had caused the accident that killed someone, but he had no idea Emily and Austin were there because
of it.
Emily didn’t explain anything. After getting all her questions answered, she left with Austin. Even though she was sure Lydia was behind Bob’s accident, there were still a lot of things she couldn’t figure out.
She pondered, ‘Bob’s whereabouts were supposed to be a secret, so how did Lydia know exactly when he’d be coming back to Cloudridge? And how could she have figured out the exact time he’d be passing that road?
‘What made her so sure Mark would make the call himself? How could she possibly predict that the driver, after hearing the news, would be in such a rush to get home that he’d risk running a red light for just a couple of seconds?
‘If this were all Lydia’s scheme, there were way too many things out of her control. What gave her the confidence that everything would fall into place?
‘From what I know about Lydia, she is never that scheming-there’s no way she could have orchestrated something this complicated. So how did she pull it off?
Emily’s brow stayed tightly knit as she mulled over all these questions, but she just couldn’t find a single clue. The lead involving Mark seemed to have hit a dead end.
Watching her worry day in and day out, Austin wanted to tell her to take a break, but he just couldn’t bring himself to say it.
Then he figured out a solution and said, “Emily, if we can’t find any leads, maybe we can make the leads come to us.
“If one hasn’t done anything shady, one doesn’t have to worry about anyone coming after you. If Lydia found out we had gone to see Mark and even got some clues, she’d get nervous and do something suspicious.
“As long as she made a move, we would have a chance to catch her slipping up.”
Because of the plan, Emily wasn’t in a hurry to return to Cloudridge. Austin took her all over town as if they were on
vacation.
She knew he was just trying to help her relax, so she didn’t refuse. After a few days of sightseeing, she did feel much better.
After a few days of hanging out, there was still no sign of any movement from Lydia, but it was the cemetery staff who called first, saying that Lucas had tracked Emily down to the cemetery.
Emily hadn’t made any effort to hide the fact that she’d bought those burial plots, so if Xavier or Lucas put their mind to it, they could easily find out.
But she never expected Lucas would actually go all the way to the cemetery just to find her.
Emily frowned, and just hearing Lucas’s name was enough to ruin her good mood. She honestly had no idea why Lucas was so obsessed with finding her.
She said coldly. “Do me a favor and tell him I have nothing to do with the Bennett Family anymore. If he wants someone to pretend we’re some loving siblings, he’d better look elsewhere. I can’t stand that kind of act.”
She was about to hang up when Lucas’s voice suddenly came through the phone.
He said, “Emily, wait. Don’t hang up. I know I was wrong. Back then, I was completely fooled by Lydia and all her lies. Everything I did to you-I didn’t mean it. I can make it up to you. Can you please stop ignoring me?”
There was even a pleading note in his voice, making him sound downright pitiful.
