Chapter 167
Emily spoke slowly and clearly, “Because he’s truly sincere and pure-hearted. In our old neighborhood, all the elderly folks like him, because he treats everyone with heartfelt sincerity.” That was the only true sincerity she had ever felt.
Her reason was so simple, it barely even counted as a reason. So Lucas couldn’t understand, thinking she was just making up excuses to brush him off.
He sneered, “Just because of that? Emily, you’re not a child anymore. Do you believe such childish words?
“What sincerity? The Bennett Family has taught you since childhood to be wary of others, yet you’re wary of your own family and instead foolishly trust a stranger you’ve only known for a short time.
“Even if he’s sincere towards you now, how do you know he won’t change his mind later? Emily, you’re so childish, it’s laughable.”
Emily wasn’t upset by his words; instead, she nodded in agreement and said, “You’re right. I really am childish, laughably so -foolishly believing that sincerity could last forever.”
Even though she agreed with him, Lucas couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. After a brief hesitation, he said, “I’m glad you understand. Only your family will ever be truly sincere to you.”
Emily let out a cold, mocking laugh. She scoffed inwardly, ‘Family? Sincere? What makes him so sure?’
Emily sneered, “There’s no such thing as everlasting sincerity in this world. Have you forgotten? You once swore, with all your heart, that you’d always treat me well and never let anyone hurt me.
“But later, for Lydia’s sake, you called me cruel, wished me dead, forced me to admit I was wrong, and even almost threw an ashtray at my head. So this is what you call sincerity?”
Lucas was left speechless. He had never imagined he would ever treat Emily that way. Back when he promised to always be good to her, he truly meant every word.
But the times he cursed her, wished her dead, and nearly smashed her head with an ashtray-those things happened too, and they were just as real.
Lucas opened his mouth, but nothing came out. He had no words to argue back. So he just said, “Even if I wished you ill or said those things, you brought it on yourself.
“If you were as mature and kind-hearted as Lydia, of course, I would have always treated you well. But just look at yourself- do you really think you measure up to Lydia?”
Emily forced a smile. Being compared to Lydia was always the Bennett Family’s way-she was forever the one who could
never measure up.
She said, “Since you think Lydia is so great, then save all your sincerity for her. Don’t talk to me about sincerity anymore.”
Lucas fixed his gaze on the sarcastic smile at the corner of her lips, a flicker of hesitation in his eyes. He thought, ‘Is she hinting that my sincerity towards Lydia could change, too? No way. That will never happen.
‘Lydia is pure and kind-hearted—nothing like Emily, who never knows what is good for her. I will always treat Lydia well, no
matter what.’
Just then, Lydia’s voice suddenly rang out from behind them. She asked, “Lucas, Emily, what are you two talking about?”
Lucas turned around, and the anger that had been on his face just moments ago melted away, replaced by a gentle smile. He

said, “Lydia, you’re back. Did you find anything good while shopping today?”
Lydia smiled warmly and affectionately as she replied, “A couple of brands just released some new handbags, so Yvonne and
I went to check them out.”
As if remembering something, she pulled a pendant out of her pocket and said, “I saw this while I was shopping. It’s so cute, and I thought it would look perfect hanging in your new car.
“That way, every time you see it, you’ll think of me.”
