Chapter 250

Seeing her still being all polite with him, Austin just pursed his lips helplessly, but didn’t say anything more. There was still a long road ahead. One day, she’d finally let her guard down around him.

After leaving the cemetery, Emily felt like a huge weight had finally been lifted off her shoulders. She didn’t want to go back to the Bennett residence, that suffocating house. So, she just went with Austin straight back to their apartment.

But she hadn’t expected that as soon as they stepped into the neighborhood, she’d spot a familiar car parked there. The person inside clearly saw her, too, and hurried out of the car.

“Emily, you’re finally back. I’ve been waiting here for like two or three hours.” Lucas came running over, grinning from ear to ear, not even a hint of annoyance on his face after waiting so long.

For a moment, Emily felt like she’d been pulled right back to those days before she turned eighteen, back when she and Lucas were as close as ever.

Back then, Lucas trusted her more than anyone and depended on her for everything. Whatever he wanted to do, he always

let her call the shots.

But as time went on, Lucas grew more and more impatient with her. Even if she was just a little slow putting on her shoes, he’d shoot her a look of annoyance and snap at her.

She’d seen the other side of Lucas before, so watching him act all cheerful, she couldn’t help but find it laughable.

As Lucas came running over, Emily took a step back, putting some distance between them. Her whole vibe was cold and distant. “Is there something you need, Mr. Bennett?”

Lucas’s smile froze, especially when he saw Austin standing in front of Emily. A surge of anger rose up in him, but he forced it back down.

After all, the Bennett family hadn’t given her any allowance in years. Of course, Emily would have some resentment about that. Since he’d already decided to make it up to her, he might as well let her throw a little tantrum.

That was what Lucas told himself, so he plastered a smile back on his face. “Emily, ever since you came back, we haven’t had a family dinner. Mom even had the kitchen whip up your favorite dishes today. She asked me to bring you home.”

He shot Austin a sideways look. “It’s just us, just family, sitting down to eat and talk. No others, I promise.” He sounded sincere, but Emily only grew more skeptical and guarded.

The day she came back, Gale looked at her like she’d been reincarnated as a starving ghost, like she was some disgrace to the Bennett family. He’d straight-up forbid her from even sitting at the dinner table.

And after almost half a year, they suddenly remembered that “the family hasn’t had a proper meal together”. Emily thought, ‘Seriously, isn’t that just laughable?’

The blatant suspicion and wariness in her eyes stabbed Lucas’s heart like needles, making his chest tighten so much he almost forgot to breathe.

When talking to her, all he saw in Emily’s eyes was cold distance and guardedness. It was like the smile that used to light up her eyes had vanished for good.

Lucas opened his mouth, but not a single word came out. In the end, he could only avert his gaze. ‘Grandpa Charles is coming back today, too. Andrew already went to the hospital to pick him up.”

He knew Emily was still holding a grudge against all of them. If he wanted her to come back with him today, he had no

choice but to play the Charles card. Sure enough, the coldness in Emily’s expression softened a little.

If it were just the Bennetts having a so-called “family” dinner, they’d never ask her to join. But with Charles coming, that was a whole different story.

After hesitating for a moment, just as Emily was about to agree, Austin suddenly chimed in. “Emily, why don’t you give Grandpa Charles a call first?”
