Chapter 274

Chapter 274

Vincent hurried to comfort her in a low voice. He seemed to have totally forgotten what he’d just been thinking about. Everyone else in the Bennett Family also crowded around Lydia, fussing over her.

They actually seemed more worried about Lydia than Charles, who was still lying in the operating room. They even wanted to call a doctor over to check on her right away.

Lucas just stood there in the corner, stunned, not moving to join the others.

He glanced at Lydia, surrounded by everyone fussing over her, then at Emily, sitting there in a daze with her eyes fixed on the operating room. For the first time, the reality of how differently the two were treated really hit him.

All this time, Lucas had believed they treated both girls the same, and that Emily was greedy and never satisfied, always trying to take things from Lydia. But now, he could tell that their hearts were never truly fair.

They were both part of the Bennett Family, and Emily had grown up with them since she was little. Lucas didn’t know why they always loved Lydia more.

Lucas felt like his whole world was in chaos, as if two opposing forces were ripping at his mind, trying to split him into two completely different people.

Suddenly, a wave of pain crashed through his head. He had to grab the wall beside him just to barely steady himself.

Just then, the operating room door finally swung open.

Emily was the first to rush forward, her voice trembling with worry. “Doctor, how is Grandpa Charles?”

The doctor took off his mask. “Charles’s head injury isn’t too serious. But he’s getting on in years. His health wasn’t great to begin with, and this has been a huge shock to his system.

“We’ve done everything we can. Whether he can make it through or not, that’s up to him now.”

Emily’s knees buckled, and a wave of icy dread seemed to freeze her from the inside out.

Austin quickly caught her, his voice soft and comforting. “Don’t worry, Emily. I’m sure Mr. Bennett is blessed. He’ll pull through.”

The others were sad to hear what the doctor said, but they weren’t nearly as shaken as Emily, and deep down, they were actually relieved.

They’d been scared the doctor would walk out and just announce Charles was gone, right then and there. If that really happened, the company would be thrown into turmoil.

Lydia was the only one who wasn’t relieved; instead, she was gritting her teeth in resentment. ‘Why won’t he just kick the bucket already?’ she fumed inwardly.

Lydia quickly put on a happy face. “I’m so glad Grandpa is okay. If I had to watch him pass away right in front of me, I don’t think I could ever forgive myself.

“Doctor, can I go in and see him now? I won’t be able to relax until I see him.”

“No,” Emily snapped, cutting in before the doctor could even answer.

She leaned on Austin for support, her gaze icy as it swept over the group in front of her. “Until Grandpa Charles wakes up, no one is allowed to go near him, not even any of you.”

Gale’s face darkened, especially when he saw the doctor’s surprised expression Who gave you the right to do this?”

“Grandpa Charles has already handed over all his people to me. They only take orders from me now, Emily shot back. completely unfazed by Gale’s anger.

Emily didn’t care about Gale’s rage at all. She immediately ordered Charles’s bodyguards to guard the room in shifts, day and night. No one was allowed in except for specific doctors and nurses.

Not even Charles’s medicine could go in without being checked first.

“How dare you-” Gale stammered. He never expected Emily to actually stand up to him. His hand shook as he pointed at her, but for a long moment, no words would come out

Emily didn’t even bother responding to him. She kept a close eye on the doctors as they moved Charles into the ICU, and finally let out her breath.

She’d only been hanging on by sheer willpower, and now that she finally let herself relax, her body just gave out. Everything went dark, and she passed out cold.
