Chapter 280
Chapter 280
Noticing how hoarse her voice was, Austin answered as he handed her the glass of warm water he’d kept ready for her. Emily
didn’t refuse.
After taking a sip to soothe her throat, she asked, “Did you check the security cameras?”
She knew what Austin was like; he’d probably started looking into it the moment she passed out.
There wasn’t a single blind spot on this floor’s security cameras. With Lydia and the bodyguard each telling a different story, all they had to do was check the cameras to see who was lying.
Austin had already started investigating, but he figured Emily would be lost in her grief for a long time, so he didn’t bring her the results just yet.
However, Emily turned out to be way tougher than he’d thought.
Even though he hadn’t brought the files, Austin was totally up to speed. “We already checked the security cameras. Lydia doesn’t show up on any of the footage.
“I even had an expert check it out, and there’s no sign anyone messed with the recordings. It looks like the bodyguard’s lying, but I’ve checked out his background and there’s nothing suspicious about him.”
Bob personally handpicked this group of bodyguards, and they’d been with Charles for six or seven years. They were totally trustworthy, the last people one would expect to mess up.
But the investigation had hit a dead end. No matter whom they looked into, nothing seemed off about anyone.
Emily hadn’t expected that things would turn out like this, either. But she refused to believe Lydia was innocent.
Everything had started because of those photos circulating online, and those photos were tied to Cale. There was absolutely no way Lydia could wash her hands of this,
Emily asked, “Did you find out where Lydia was that night?”
Austin knew she wouldn’t let go of her suspicions about Lydia, so he said, “The Bennett Family’s security cameras show she really didn’t leave the house that night, and there’s no footage of her at the hospital either.
“But I’m still checking any surveillance footage along the way.”
It was a huge amount of work, so there hadn’t been any new progress yet.
Emily knew this wasn’t going to be easy.
Lydia always covered her tracks way too well. Emily knew it would be hard to catch her slipping up, but that just made her more determined to keep digging.
As they were trying to figure out where to start their investigation, someone barged into the hospital room unannounced.
Lucas stood in the hospital room, shuffling awkwardly with a bunch of flowers and some fruit in his hands.
After all these years, it was the first time Emily had ever seen Lucas, usually so impulsive and brash, look this unsure of
himself.
But she couldn’t care less about what he wanted. She just looked away, her expression icy.

Austin stood
up and walked over to the door. “What are you doing here?”
Normally, Lucas would have lost his temper and started yelling at Austin, but today he was surprisingly friendly. “I just came
to see Em-
“She has nothing to do with you. Your sister is at the Bennett Family,” Austin cut him off mercilessly. “She’s been hurt for days, and you’re only showing up now? Don’t you think that’s ridiculous?”
Lucas was annoyed that Austin had cut him off, but he couldn’t refute what he said.
Emily had been hurt at the same time as Charles, and now Charles was gone. The fact that he was only coming to visit now really was ridiculous.
But if he didn’t come and get some answers, those questions would keep clinging to his mind like a curse, making it impossible for him to focus on anything or even get a good night’s sleep.
But Austin didn’t care what he thought. He raised his hand to close the door. “We don’t want you here. Don’t come back.”
“Wait,” Lucas hurriedly blocked the door before it could close and blurted out, “I-I came because I have something to say about Grandpa.”
Sure enough, Austin paused and turned to look at Emily, who was still lying on the bed.
