Chapter 290
Chapter 290
Lucas rubbed his nose, looking a bit embarrassed. “I-I came to see Emily. I need to talk to her.”
Austin blocked the doorway with his whole body. “Whatever you want, just say it to me. I’ll decide if it’s worth telling Emily.”
Lucas frowned, making it obvious he had no intention of telling Austin anything.
But when he glanced up through the gap in the door, he happened to spot Emily sitting there on the couch.
She was so close that there was no way she hadn’t heard him, yet she didn’t even bother to look his way.
Lucas felt a pang in his chest; she really didn’t want to see him.
Realizing that, a dull ache spread through his chest, and he couldn’t help but raise his voice, “Emily, can you please talk to me? Just like we used to?”
Back then, Emily was the one Lucas trusted and leaned on most in the Bennett Family. Whenever he had something weighing on his mind, he’d always go to Emily. She’d listen, comfort him, and help him figure things out.
Lucas really missed those days and the Emily he used to know.
Maybe she could feel the emotion in his words. Emily, who’d been sitting on the couch without moving, finally stood up and walked toward the door.
She motioned for Austin to step aside, but made no move to let Lucas in. She stared right into Lucas’s eyes, like she was reading him like an open book. “Did your investigation lead you to Lydia?”
She knew Lucas all too well. Whenever he ran into something he just couldn’t accept, he’d end up feeling lost and down, always coming to her to vent and ask for advice.
Not long ago, Lucas had said he was going to look into that whole photo mess, and now he was here looking like this. It wasn’t hard to guess what had happened.
Seeing how well she understood him, Lucas didn’t know whether to feel comforted or just plain awkward.
“I-” He wanted to deny it, but when he met Emily’s eyes, the words just wouldn’t come out.
Finally, he averted his eyes, feeling a little guilty. “No, Lydia’s got the kindest heart. She would never do something like this.”
He didn’t even know if he was saying it for Emily’s sake or just to comfort himself.
He kept telling himself over and over, ‘Lydia is kind, pure, and innocent. There’s no way she’d do something like this. It has to be a misunderstanding!
It felt like that was the only way to keep the beliefs he’d clung to all this time from falling apart so easily.
Still, Emily knew him all too well.
“You already know the answer in your heart, but you keep lying to yourself. Don’t you think that’s ridiculous?” Emily said.
Suddenly, realization flashed in her eyes. “Lucas, you just can’t admit that Lydia isn’t as perfect as you want to believe. Is it because she once saved your life, so in your heart, she gets a free pass for everything?”
Lucas avoided her gaze, but he didn’t deny it. Yeah, Lydia had saved his life. So even if the whole family turned on him because of her, he could never blame her-not ever.

Chapter 290
In his eyes, Lydia would always be pure and kind. Even if the whole world doubted her, he just couldn’t bring himself to do
the same.
Lucas kept warning himself over and over, but then Emily let out a cold, mocking laugh. “Lucas, you really are just ridiculously pathetic.
“You keep obsessing over how Lydia supposedly saved your life on Lightning Valley, but you have no idea that the person who risked their life, searched the mountain for days without sleep, and finally dragged you out, battered and bruised, was never Lydia at all.”
She continued, “It was me. I was the one who kept running into those mountains like an idiot to look for you when everyone else had already given up.
“I ran into snakes, wild boars, and more than once almost lost my life, all just to save you, you ungrateful boy. Lucas, I really wish I’d never saved you back then.”
